The updated numbers for COVID-19 in the U.S. are in for 6/13 per: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

I'm keeping track of these updates daily and updating at the end of the day, whenever all states finish reporting for that day.

ΔW Change: Comparisons of Weekly Day-to-day Growth or Decline of COVID-19 Spread/Deaths.
  • IE: Comparing the numbers to the same day of last week, are we flattening the curve enough?

Σ Increase: A day's contribution to overall percentage growth of COVID-19 cases/deaths.
  • IE:What's the overall change in the total?

Brackets []: These represent the total change for the day, including backlogged reports, if any.
  • These numbers are inflated relative to the actual reports for the day, so they are not used to calculate the comparative percentage shifts.

Looking at the numerical trends over the last week and the fantastically low numbers today, this might be the last week of my regular COVID stats posts.

Seriously, you've done a fantastic job providing these updates on a daily basis for well over a year.  I'm sure most of the forum would join me in saying a big Thank You!

Thank you, GM and MATT! Smiley

I might continue them depending on how the rest of the week looks. Things, nevertheless, are very much on the upswing.

I caution everyone here that many states have suddenly decided to switch to weekly data, including Florida.
For this reason, daily numbers may not be reflective anymore, weekly may be neccesary.

Man I wish my vaccine turned me into Magneto.

I'm usually not one for stereotyping, but why is is that anti-vaxxers always seem to fit into the same kind of demographic profile, in terms of gender, race, and socioeconomic status?

My guess is that Boomers in general are susceptible to misinformation since they haven’t grown up with the internet like millennials and Zoomers. Plus they’re hyper concentrated on Facebook.

Expanding upon this, the patterns seem to be that women are much more likely than men to believe in anti-vaxxer conspiracy theories, that white women are more likely than minority women to do so, and that middle-class women (i.e. "soccer moms" and retirees) are the most visible of all in pushing such theories. And there are anti-vaxxers on both sides of the ideological spectrum, although the opposition to the coronavirus vaccine in particular is overwhelmingly from the right.

Nate Silver has been pretty chill about the stay-at-home stuff. That's pretty remarkable considering he works for ABC.

Gee it’s almost as if...not everyone who works at a news company are exactly the same and have the exact same beliefs on every issue and are involved in some huge conspiracy to brainwash the American public.
A hard concept for an alternative facts tankie to understand, but maybe realizing the world isn’t so black and white will be helpful for you.

If the American public is so soft that they can’t handle staying at home six-eight weeks (at most) while still having places to communication via the internet, that is just pathetic.
Clearly we deserve what is coming to us.

And that still doesn’t account for lack of social distancing afterwards and lack of mask wearing. Cut the bulls**t.

Why would staying at home for “six-eight weeks (at most)” have accomplished anything in the long term?  This is what they did in most of Europe did, and many of those countries experienced much worse surges than we ever did once they opened back up again.

Nate has easily been one of the most reasonable public voices on these issues throughout the whole pandemic.

It wouldn’t have.
The purpose of staying home that period is to allow for better medical treatments to be developed, which did happen. That’s why we saw our later waves have generally deaths even with more cases (along with testing)

Social distancing, public responsibility, and mask wearing is needed for a medium term pandemic prevention. Unfortunately as demonstrated by the exemplary members of the public above, expecting basic common sense and decency is way too much to ask.

Voluntarily deliberate infection & quarantine.

Or at the very least massive vaccine challenge trials.

Isn't that independent of lockdowns of social distancing? In that it would help whether you do lockdowns and social distancing or not. And lockdowns and social distancing would have the same effect whether you  do challenge trials or not.

Maybe the Biden administration should be focusing on getting Democrats and Democrats leaning independents vaccinated.

That way, if there is a surge, our party would be less affected.
