 these bullsh**t health experts.
Del Tachi was 100% in calling our their absolute fakeness.

I should go to a protest with thousands of people but churches have a strict limit of 25. Huh

The virus spreads easier indoors.

It's a catch-22. You either let corrupt public officials do whatever they want  or abandon public health. We're really at the point of no return on so many things.

That's a good way to put it, everything is such a mess right now.
That's an understatement. This is failure.

No. This is SPARTA!!!

The updated numbers for COVID-19 in the U.S. are in for 6/2 per: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

If we do not see a surge in new cases due to these protests, then how will these restrictions be maintained, going forward?

Wait, when did a medical expert that has promoted social distancing say that these protests were a good idea?

The public health response is what happens when PhD holders in this country are totally captured by and face sanction for failing to adhere to ideological wokeness.

edit: as an example of this, a post showed up in my twitter feed this evening (I will not link it) where a PhD student tried to dogpile one of her colleagues for focusing on planning for a post-COVID department rather than "addressing systematic racism". This is the language of people who stand much more to lose by misaligning their priorities in public than by advocating for the wrong thing.

What kind of PhD student was this (degree)?

I don't remember but she was at UC Davis, so one of the biology fields is pretty likely.

These are the same PhD holders who used the same "ideological wokeness" to cajole us into lockdowns, school closures and universal mask mandates, mind you.

I just hope this whole, drawn-out episode truly demonstrates how useless the medical/scientific/academic elite truly are (I say this as someone who spent 3 years in graduate school + my parents are both PhDs).  Governors and public officials who mindlessly jumped onto their bandwagon shouldn't have have a shred of credibility left.

First of all, you do know that officials like Fauci hold MDs and not PhDs, correct? Second of all, one student does not represent an entire class of students from all over. This is the failing of one student to recognize the complexity of the situation over current events. Third of all, I'm sorry that graduate school failed you so horribly.

Finally, if you think the scientific/academic communities are useless, please consider stopping the use of any of things that they have contributed to contemporary society, from vaccines to advancements in technology and infrastructure. You can take your anti-intellectualism with you on the way out.

Those mandates saved lives, and they were a logistic and procedural necessity to keep our systems from collapsing. The failure of the government to step up and provide for its citizens until the emergency is over is on them. Ultimately, experts don't dictate policy or get to vote on relief measures. Most other 'developed/first world' countries did not fail their citizens. But then again, this is the United States we're talking about here.

Fauci holds an MD (although I'm not sure he actually is a medical practitioner) but there are no shortage of PhD's at the CDC, NIH or anywhere else in the Federal government.  Moreover, the distinction is overwrought.  Medicine is an academic field and just like other fields those extensively educated in it are often siloed from any other competing or (at worst) even practical concerns.  Giving lifelong academic bureaucrats like Fauci carte blanche to dictate the scope of debate surrounding the public response was a mistake for that reason.

Secondly, what motivates technological advancement is robust protections for private property rights and responsive markets.  It's simple profit incentive.  There is no altruistic, academic search for knowledge.  This should be painfully evident given the state of American academic research; lots of corporate investment into technology/engineering departments, but everyone else only survives from patronizing unwilling taxpayers.

The mandates potentially extended the lives of mostly the already oldest and sickest among us in exchange for massive social disruption, distress, and now civil unrest.  It was not a good trade-off, and it was sold to us by liberal governors and their MSM buddies only after being peddled by the big wigs at WHO, CDC and academic medical departments.  The only appropriate response going forward is to stop the fear mongering that's plagued the past three months and get Americans back to work.

Nah.

What's the alternative? People just do and think whatever they want based on nothing? The system sucks, OK? But saying that "no one really knows what's going on" is just accepting whatever the world throws at us. It's not what adults do.

On the other hand, you did talk about making a bad trade in prolonging the lives of those whom we currently lack the engineering, social, and scientific capacity to provide a "good" quality of life to at the expense of literally everyone else.

I think that's another broad generalization but it does suggest that a lot of these experts might be misallocated. Perhaps we gave into technocratic tendencies before we had clear objectives of what we wanted as a society. Putting policy into the hands of experts only works if you know what you actually want in the first place. Having experts go out and make that decision for us might be something we need to think about.  Asking economists from the University of Chicago what we wanted is what gave us extreme right-liberalism and only populism as an alternative.

Einstein was both scientific and academic elite. Please feel free to ditch your phone, your car, not use the internet, and only watch local TV over the air. Very questionable any satellite technology could work without GR.

The magnitude of this problem moving forward cannot be underestimated. Besides the obvious result of academia pushing for the wrong policies, another major issue is that this has been eroding, and will further erode, conservative trust in academic institutions. Most liberals on here may not see that as something they should care about, but there will eventually come points where conservatives' views of academia affect liberals also. To many people even on a place like Atlas this may be thought of as something that's been happening for decades, but we've clearly turned a corner in recent years in terms of public opinion:

Erosion of bipartisan support for an institution is very often the beginning of a marked decline... I see no reason to think it cannot go much lower.

The implication in the post is that lockdowns were a bad idea because of the response to the protests, which is a non-sequitur.

We're going to see a lot of this argument trying to vindicate opposition to lockdowns by arguing that the people imposing them were hypocrites. The latter being true doesn't make the former true at all. It's an ad hominem argument in its purest form.

In general, pointing out hypocrisies is one of the lowest forms of critical thought. When a person speaks out of both sides of their mouth, odds are, one of those sides is right. The wave of people we will see in the future who try to argue against lockdowns in this vein should be considered intellectual scoundrels.

With that said, I absolutely agree with the charge that many people have forfeited their authority on this issue by trying to take both sides here. It's one of the aspects of this very ugly and complicated scene that I find most horrifying; not because I am interested in ideology, but because when we face surges as a consequence of this (and/or in the Fall) it will be much, much more difficult to convince people to comply with the policy which leads to the most safe outcome.

I haven't seen any evidence for this premise. There's a letter signed by dozens of public health and disease experts in support of the protests. Were any of them on TV saying we needed to lock down? Were any of them advising the CDC or local governments? Who exactly is a hypocrite here?

The fact both political parties seem to want to ignore the pandemic shows how far astray America has gone. This is a failed nation, with a failing people. It’s a shame nobody cares that 1k Americans are dying each day from Covid anymore. BLM is a disgrace to America and is complicit in the spreading of this pandemic.

I’ve been consistently pro-lockdown. You must have me confused with someone else, being strongly pro-lockdown is literally what distinguishes me here.

The updated numbers for COVID-19 in the U.S. are in for 6/3 per: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

I'm keeping track of these updates daily and updating at the end of the day, whenever all states finish reporting for that day.

Δ Change: Day-by-day Growth or Decline or COVID-19 Spread/Deaths.
  • IE: Are we flattening the curve enough?

Σ Increase: A day's contribution to overall percentage growth of COVID-19 cases/deaths.
  • IE: What's the overall change in the total?
