Guys, are we seriously going to go through the holiday cycle again?
Don’t get me wrong, numbers are likely decreasing, but these are artificially low because it’s Memorial Day weekend.
So first we will see artificially low numbers, and then there will be a “rise” next week. Honestly I wouldn’t look too hard at the data this next week, the errors should sort themselves out by next Tuesday.
Stay safe and happy Memorial Day Smiley
...Honestly, after this and my election predictions, I think I should just start dooming forever.

Seriously I’m shocked we didn’t see a rise. I was expected a small one, but no. Clearly we are in a better situation than thought. This also does say a lot about the strength of vaccinations, even as we have reopened more, cases still decline.

It seems like many people think otherwise, such as my own family. Although the pandemic is receding, it's still having an impact upon my personal life, in unfortunate ways.

I decided to repeat Adam Griffin's exercise linked above using data from June 04, 2021.

As of June 04, 51.3% of Americans have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccination while 41.6% of Americans are fully vaccinated. This shows a gap of 9.7%.

As Adam Griffin said, "In my opinion (at least in most states' situations), a large & growing gap between the 2 groups is still good, as this indicates there is still high demand for vaccination and lots of people are continuing to get their first shots."

Alright so these are the gaps by state:

States with data text too small to fit on the map:

Spoiler alert! Click Show to show the content.

States which have an above-average gap between the fully vaccinated population and the one-dose population are in blue and states which have a below-average gap between the fully vaccinated population and the one-dose population are in red (Sorry for the politically charged map but you see this scheme is color-blind friendly). States exactly at the average (CT) are in white.

PR representing Sunglasses

There are some municipalities in PR that have already gone well above the 70% threshold. This was done by having mobile vaccination units go residence by residence. Other municipalities are aiming to follow this example, so it looks like PR will continue to keep up the pace.

Really looking forward to our first three-digit cases day — and it looks like it may happen sometime in July, if trends hold.

The potential surge in cases after the CDC revised their mask recommendations didn't happen.

The most effective way to prevent the coronavirus is to get vaccinated.

Florida just became the 22nd state where 50% or more of the population has received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccination! 💪💪💪

Joining these states (as well as territories):

With the exception of Florida, every state that has reached that benchmark voted for Biden. This is yet another map showing how Democratic voters and Democratic areas are more likely to get vaccinated than their Republican counterparts.

And Florida might be the exception due to its high senior population.  I expect that even among Republicans, older people are more likely to want to get vaccinated.

I got vaccinated as early as possible, exploiting the fact that I had just turned 65. Too many people around my age died, and too many people near me (this is a strongly-R area, and anti-mask sentiment correlates heavily with reactionary politics) weren't wearing masks. Because influenza and COVID-19 have some similarities as symptoms, I made sure that I got my flu vaccine as early as possible so that I would not have to get medical care for the flu that might expose me to COVID-10.

African-Americans still skeptical of the COVID vaccine despite Biden's best efforts:

Biden’s vaccine push fails to gain traction with African Americans
Less than a quarter of Black Americans had received their first Covid-19 shot as of June 3. That's less than other racial and ethnic groups tracked by the CDC.

As I've noted before, this vaccine hesitancy has reached into my own family. Neither my father nor my uncle have gotten the vaccine. They're not convinced of its efficacy, and don't feel comfortable with getting it now. Conversely, I am fully vaccinated, as is my stepmother. Blacks have long tended to be suspicious of doctors and of our country's medical system in general, and the reasons for this are grounded in the discriminatory practices and unfair experiments many blacks experienced in the past, going back to the days of slavery.

That suspicion must be very deep indeed, since apparently even former President Obama hasn't been able to convince them to take it.

It's frustrating. I've talked about how my father and stepmother want me to wear a mask around them at home, even though I'm fully vaccinated, because they're concerned I might bring the virus back to them and they're doubtful that the vaccine will be "100% effective." I had sincerely hoped that the vaccine would bring back a return to normalcy, but in my personal life, that still hasn't occurred to the extent I would wish.

Florida actually did something positive? I guess self-preservation, particularly by seniors, is indeed stronger than paranoia.

If this would get black people to get COVID-19 vaccines, I would do it.

I would dress up in a Klan robe and tell black people that COVID-19 serves my dream of exterminating a large number of black people so that they can never vote. Right in front of a burning cross.

In isolation it would probably work in a narrow sense, but in the real world it would inevitably cause a media firestorm and only end up being counterproductive more broadly.
So yeah, definitely too weird and too disturbing.
