The updated numbers for COVID-19 in the U.S. are in for 6/30 per: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

I'm keeping track of these updates daily and updating at the end of the day, whenever all states finish reporting for that day.

ΔW Change: Comparisons of Weekly Day-to-day Growth or Decline of COVID-19 Spread/Deaths.
  • IE: Comparing the numbers to the same day of last week, are we flattening the curve enough?

Σ Increase: A day's contribution to overall percentage growth of COVID-19 cases/deaths.
  • IE:What's the overall change in the total?

Brackets []: These represent the total change for the day, including backlogged reports, if any.
  • These numbers are inflated relative to the actual reports for the day, so they are not used to calculate the comparative percentage shifts.

Got my first shot today, been having bad anxiety though (but this preceded even my going to bed)

You'll be fine. I was anxious before both of my shots. All I had was pain at the injection site for a few days if that helps you.

That seems to be what I'm getting. My left arm is in bad shape in the first place (sleep posture/computer use) and the shot was in an area that's generally sore so I think it just inflamed that area. But seems very local and limited to that specific muscle, albeit very sore.

There's a new study published in Nature that Biontech/Pfitzer and Moderna vaccines protect most people for years. Looks like mRNA vaccines are the real goldstandard.

I'm not sure that's true. It's certainly not true for the U.S., where we've only had 10,000 or so breakthrough infections total from all variants. If it's worldwide, then that's a pretty stellar number considering 850 million people or so are fully vaccinated now. That's a .000001% chance of breakthrough infection, which seems very low. So I'm not sure where that number is coming from.

The lack of reporting on delta plus is annoying. Yes we should be concerned about delta, but why has no one been talking about delta plus, it’s likely worse and ignoring it isn’t going to help anyone.

From what I understand (and I’m not an expert), Delta Plus isn’t really any worse than Delta in terms of transmission and vaccine efficacy, just different in what treatments it responds to.

Not true necessarily if what I’m looking through is correct. (And again reporting on delta plus is minuscule, so take what you will with this)
We still don’t know the impacts of delta plus on vaccine efficacy or transmission, the most we have is speculation unless you are aware of a trial which occurred and wasn’t well covered.

We only know delta plus is resistant to some monoclonal antibody treatments. That honestly doesn’t say much, and vaccines could easily still work against it, or not.

Off tangent, but probably not. afaik Austria closed it's schools literally days after his wife tweeted that and didn't reopen them (except some primary schools but even that only very limited on off) until about mid may. So as his motivation was to get his kids more in-person education, he probably ended up better in the US.

I’m not sure if we’ve missed this, but Delta is now the most common variant in the U.S, making up more than 40% of cases. The fact that we have yet to see a serious surge is a good sign, I think?

Just wait. It may be a good sign, it may take a while to truly take off like in the UK.
The numbers in the UK slowly started creeping up a month ago, it took a bit of time for explosive growth.

Yeah, I’m not saying we’re 100% out of the woods yet. But by the time the Delta variant was the most common in the UK (June 4th) they’d already started seeing a pretty sharp rise in cases. Which we really haven’t, apart from Missouri. So fingers crossed for what the next week will bring. I’m optimistic!

I'll be delighted to take a third shot against a deadly variant for which my immunity is suspect.

That's good to know, even if it's the company itself stating that.

As someone who got the shot back in March, it's a little troubling how I never hear about the J&J shot anymore. Ever since April when they were temporarily pulled and that Baltimore factory had delays, it feels like the J&J has gotten shafted completely and has truly become a "lesser" shot in the public/news/government eye. Even when reading about how much jurisdictions have fully vaccinated, J&J is never mentioned in that equation.

It almost makes me want to go back and get the Pfizer/Moderna shots just to be "truly fully" vaccinated.

I've actually seen quite a few articles around saying this should be safe to do for people who got the J&J/AZ vaccines if they're concerned with the current level of protection.

This pandemic really has unleashed the hidden idiot in a lot of people. I don't think I even quite have the words for this one.

If it's what you're implying, I don't know if getting two shots to feel over-protective would even make the top 50 dumbest takes about the pandemic.

It’s not likely necessary, but we do know that some have done this (including several immunologists) and have been fine. Those aren’t clinical studies per say, so it is definitely a risk.

But you may want to get an antibody test before you do this at least, chances are it will confirm you are swimming in them and will receive no additional benefit from a third.

And Fil, you’re the real idiot for slinging that word without even looking at the issue itself. Several studies have been done on organ transplants and show that a third vaccine did provide a boost to those who previously had very low levels because of their condition. Of course, what would I expect from one of many pseudo-intellectuals here?
