I won't wear a mask to church of course because its obvious there I'm not a Republican or live music shows once those start again because no Republicans would attend the ones I do. Otherwise I'm still masking up and making it dead clear I didn't vote for Trump.

You know, at some point you're going to have to give up the pretense that anyone thinking you voted for a candidate is going to make a difference in your daily life. Or that people who voted for the president who *just showed Americans today that it is ok to shed your mask once you're vaccinated* aren't going to follow his example.
In a couple weeks sure. But until then I must make sure that everyone understands that I did not support Trump.

Why do you care what strangers think of your political beliefs?

In my county which voted 80+% for Trump, only 2.7% is fully vaccinated.

Pathetic.

This is a terrible decision unless they're going to mandate proof of vaccination, otherwise it's just going to encourage unvaccinated people to lie and spread the virus more.

There is some truth to this. I have no doubts that many unvaccinated people are going to use this new CDC guidance as an excuse to stop wearing masks-if they haven't do so already-or to justify their not doing so. However, do you think it's reasonable to expect vaccinated people to continue to wear masks indefinitely? I certainly don't think so. Unfortunately, there will be a segment of the population that will don masks long after they've received the vaccine. But I suspect that the majority of people will move back to normal behavior once it's safe for them to do so.

I don't have an issue with those who personally decide to continue wearing a mask and mind their own business when it comes to other people but I'm already seeing a growing trend on social media of people trying to shame others for being excited to go without masks or saying the CDC is too premature for doing this when they've been preaching "listen to the science!" for months. All I have to say is f**k those people.

It is good news overall to me, but this is a bit of an apprehension I have as well. In three weeks exactly when it is a fortnight after my second dose, I intend on carrying around my vaccine card just in case, because I cannot put it past many to lie about being vaccinated and thereby putting everyone at risk once again. I really do wonder how enforcement of this is going to work.

The free fall continues. The 7-day positive rate crashes down again, this time to 2.88%.

The updated numbers for COVID-19 in the U.S. are in for 5/13 per: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

I'm keeping track of these updates daily and updating at the end of the day, whenever all states finish reporting for that day.

ΔW Change: Comparisons of Weekly Day-to-day Growth or Decline of COVID-19 Spread/Deaths.
  • IE: Comparing the numbers to the same day of last week, are we flattening the curve enough?

Σ Increase: A day's contribution to overall percentage growth of COVID-19 cases/deaths.
  • IE:What's the overall change in the total?

Brackets []: These represent the total change for the day, including backlogged reports, if any.
  • These numbers are inflated relative to the actual reports for the day, so they are not used to calculate the comparative percentage shifts.

I mean yeah I fully expect these people to shut up and go back outside within the next couple of weeks but unfortunately right now these types of people make up a large share of small private liberal arts college students.

Sure seems that way. On the 1st of June it will be two weeks since my second dose of Pfizer. Far as I'm concerned the pandemic ends that day.

It might be on its last legs here, but not in general. The situation in India is worse now than it ever was in the US.

I said it before and I will say it again

Twitter is not the real world and the idiots who are replying to a Bidens post with anti-mask or anti Vaxx BS do not a reflect how the vast majority of the American people really feel about the president's handling of covid

At this point, barring some kind of apocalyptic variant, COVID-19 will not be able to significantly rebound in the United States. We could see brief plateaus or rises in cases at some point, but deaths and hospitalizations will continue to drop and it will never get as bad as it was in the winter. With the amount of vaccinated people here, we are well past the point of no return.

Yup, but, as mentioned, only if no new variants resistant to current vaccines come up. This is why we should increase our efforts to vaccinate other parts of the world, particularly poor countries. The more the virus is suppressed worldwide, the less likely new variants approach. From a scientific standpoint, we could quickly adjust existing vaccines, though the rollout would have to restart. Another reason we should enhance global efforts is for the use of soft power. We shouldn't leave that to the PRC and Russia, making other countries more dependent on them.

It's also very likely we need an annual Covid shot like the flu to prevent larger outbreaks again. There's little evidence this virus will completely disappear in the near future. It's becoming endemic.
