The updated numbers for COVID-19 in the U.S. are in for 4/5 per: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

I'm keeping track of these updates daily and updating at the end of the day, whenever all states finish reporting for that day.

ΔW Change: Comparisons of Weekly Day-to-day Growth or Decline of COVID-19 Spread/Deaths.
  • IE: Comparing the numbers to the same day of last week, are we flattening the curve enough?

Σ Increase: A day's contribution to overall percentage growth of COVID-19 cases/deaths.
  • IE:What's the overall change in the total?

Brackets []: These represent the total change for the day, including backlogged reports, if any.
  • These numbers are inflated relative to the actual reports for the day, so they are not used to calculate the comparative percentage shifts.

Why are Biden and Harris still wearing masks inside the White House since they and all of the others there are vaccinated?

Probably to set an example, since there are still a lot of people who haven't gotten vaccines yet. But when we get to the point where everyone who wants a vaccine can get one, we can start ditching masks.

I think they think that, but at this point if you're not wearing one you never will and if you are you will continue to do so.  It's just theater.

This part is true. For almost a year now, I've been making note of maskless customers at my own job. The number has remained at around 20% for months now, although there are signs of an uptick. Some of the maskless are habitual customers who I've never seen wear a mask throughout the entire pandemic. They're not going to start now.

Why does your store continue to let these fools in?

I've said repeatedly that The Home Depot does not enforce the mask mandate, as we employees have been specifically told not to confront or deny service to those who are maskless.

Shameful.

I've already received my first dose, but I will still wear my mask in public so long it's necessary for public health. I don't mind anyway as it's seemed to eliminate the cold and flu. I don't think it's necessary year-round, but it'd be nice if we had seasonal masking (maybe something like from October to March).

F**k no. I'll only wear masks if I need to go out while I'm actually sick.

Masks are not fully going away, but they'll become fully voluntary. No public would stand for a post-pandemic mask order and any business that chooses to keep a mandate would likely lose a chunk of their customer base. It'll become a personal safety thing and we might wind up seeing about 20-30% of people keep using them during the cold and flu season.

I want to respond to both of these posts at the same time. As for the current mask mandates in place, they need to stay for awhile. To be honest, they should be one of the last public health measures to be rescinded. We're making very good progress with the vaccines and that is excellent news, but we still have quite some time before we hit something nearing herd immunity. Let's crush the virus before we start taking victory laps.

As for what I said about seasonal masking, I'm not arguing for a government mandate. It should be voluntary, for both businesses that want one and individuals that want to wear one. One of the problems prior to the pandemic is that masks haven't really been socially acceptable outside East Asia. It should be socially acceptable as a public health measure (once again, not arguing for a government mandate barring another serious epidemic or pandemic).

As for your response, DTC, I actually applaud your second sentence. If you and me and everybody else actually wore a mask in public when actually sick, we might have learned something from this pandemic going forward. How many would've considered wearing a mask in public when sick 15 months ago? When this pandemic is over and if people in this country (and the rest of the Western world) just started wearing masks in public when sick, we could seriously mitigate the cold and flu season (and coronavirus if it becomes a far less lethal endemic seasonal disease).

I think that Texas Rangers game might really get the ball rolling against mask mania. Major League Baseball ostensibly requires fans to wear masks, but numerous photos and news stories show many (perhaps most) fans simply didn't follow this. When it gets to be 90 degrees outside, are people really gonna sit there in masks?

The Cincinnati Reds (my big regional team) had their season opener with limited attendance, and just as many fans there went without masks.

Apparently, amusement parks have much higher compliance, but I think certain amusement parks (especially really expensive ones) attract more compliant types.

I went to a high school baseball game a week ago, and masks weren't even required.

I'm not saying any of this is good or bad, but mask mania might be on borrowed time.

New York City Schools Have Been Closing a Lot. That’s About to Change.
Mayor Bill de Blasio is easing the two-case rule about positive virus cases that had been forcing many schools to temporarily shut this year.
Quote
Mayor Bill de Blasio will change a rule that has, for months, created a paradox in New York City’s school reopening plan: Classrooms that had been reopened to students often closed again because school buildings had to shut temporarily whenever two unrelated virus cases were detected.

The mayor announced Monday that he would alter the rule, but he did not explain how. He said the new rules will be outlined in the coming days, but did not commit to making changes this week.

The closure rule has been extremely frustrating for many parents, who have said that every day brings uncertainty about whether their children will be able to attend school the following morning. Many schools have closed multiple times and sometimes have been open for just a few days before the next closure. The rule has also been intensely disruptive for educators, who have been forced to toggle between in-person and online learning with only a few hours’ notice.

Why be so stupid? It's not that hard to wear a mask. It's not some massive inconvenience. I understand the issues with not being able to go to restaurants, movie theatres, etc. I want to go to those places too. I haven't been to either of those since January of last year. We need to stop with the premature victory laps. At minimum, keep wearing your masks, keep your hands ultra-clean, and try to keep as socially distant as possible within a location. If we do that, the vaccines can carry us to victory. Or least so long as our anti-vax population isn't significant enough to prevent something like herd immunity,

Biden plans to move deadline for vaccine eligibility

Quote
President Joe Biden plans to announce Tuesday that he is moving up his deadline for states to make all American adults eligible for a coronavirus vaccine by almost two weeks.

With all states having opened eligibility to the public or at least having announced when they plan to do so, Biden will announce that every adult in the country will be eligible to be vaccinated by April 19, according to an administration official, instead of Biden's original deadline of May 1.

The fact that you received a vaccine despite downplaying the virus for months while millions of hardworking American people who actually acted like human beings this past year did not is proof our distribution was a bit flawed in some ways.

I know this guy is a moron but has he never been to another country? At least most tropical countries make you show a vaccination card to get in. There’s no difference between Honduras making me show a yellow fever vaccine than there is Greece and a COVID vaccine.

The US itself also requires you to get a vaccine in order to arrive/return from a lot of countries, even if you are a US citizen.
