The updated numbers for COVID-19 in the U.S. are in for 2/28 per: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

I'm keeping track of these updates daily and updating at the end of the day, whenever all states finish reporting for that day.

ΔW Change: Comparisons of Weekly Day-to-day Growth or Decline of COVID-19 Spread/Deaths.
  • IE: Comparing the numbers to the same day of last week, are we flattening the curve enough?

Σ Increase: A day's contribution to overall percentage growth of COVID-19 cases/deaths.
  • IE:What's the overall change in the total?

Brackets []: These represent the total change for the day, including backlogged reports, if any.
  • These numbers are inflated relative to the actual reports for the day, so they are not used to calculate the comparative percentage shifts.

We'll see what the next week holds, but this definitely looks more like the bad week was a statistical blip due to the holiday/blizzard than the start of a new wave.

The Johnson and Johnson vaccine has been only been shown to be 72% efficient. Now that might be because the trials haven't run long enough yet. But it'd be ironic if the vaccine that would benefit the most from a second dose would be the single dose one.

Wow...this is an interesting article in retrospect by Harry Enten, back when he was still with 538:

Will Trump Make Vaccines Another Partisan Issue?

Quote
We’re not sure that vaccines will become polarized along partisan lines. It’s not even clear to what extent Trump will take up the issue. But if he does, don’t be surprised if Republican and Democratic views on vaccines begin to diverge, even as the science stays the same.

What republican is opposing vaccines? Even Trump praised the vaccines and encouraged people to get them in his CPAC speech.

There have been numerous polls showing Democrats much more likely to get vaccinated than Republicans.  A recent one from the Kaiser Foundation: https://www.kff.org/coronavirus-covid-19/poll-finding/kff-covid-19-vaccine-monitor-february-2021/

It’s perfectly reasonable for Trump to get the vaccine, but I have no idea why his wife would be eligible.

Wealth and influence goes a long way. And don't forget the position she still held at the time.

His ego didn't allow it because he most likely thinks that makes him look weak.

First lady should get it so she is less likely to infect the President, for whom the vaccine might not work.

I have absolutely no problem with either of them getting the vaccine.

I do have a problem with Trump getting it and keeping quiet about it, when making it public might have gone a long way toward lessening the resistance to it that exists among many of his supporters.

Quote
President Joe Biden is set to announce on Tuesday that drugmaker Merck will help manufacture a vaccine developed by Johnson & Johnson, administration officials familiar with the matter said, increasing production capacity as the third authorized shot begins going into arms.

The arrangement between two competitors is unusual and underscores the urgency in manufacturing and distributing enough vaccine doses to inoculate as many Americans as possible.
...
The White House said it was utilizing the Defense Production Act to help equip two Merck facilities to manufacture the Johnson & Johnson product, including by bolstering "fill-finish" capacity when the doses are places in vials and by increasing availability of the components of the vaccines.

The U.K. got lucky when it left the EU.

I'd always thought the EU was undemocratic and authoritarian, but lately they've proven just how incompetent they are.

Heartbreaking: An anti-elitist internet guy realizes there isn’t some huge multinational deep state trying to oppress people like him.

Maybe someday he will learn Covid is real and masks do work!

Don't worry friend, once Joe Biden opens up America again, help is on the way. We saved your silly continent once before, and we'll do it again if we have to.
