I guess the number to watch tomorrow is 184,650. If we hit that, it'll mean 1 million new cases in a week. I don't think we will, I'm thinking it'll be something closer to 175K, but if we get an unusually bad day like we did last Friday then it could happen.

Well...it seems every other sentence I hear from a lot of Democratic politicians mentions race/gender.

This is bullshit hyperbole that degrades our political discourse.

Yes there are discrepancies and we can work to resolve those, but I don’t really think you can deny the virtue signaling coming from some Democratic politicians. Tbh, I actually think Biden is better on this than most.

The actual volume of "virtue signaling" is overall a pretty small percentage of what they actually talk about, magnified by rubes and bad faith actors more interested in axe-grinding than all else. In general, the overwhelming majority of Democratic politicians have campaigned much more on COVID and health care than they have on anything related to racial injustice.

by the way....I bet our archaic healthcare system kills infinitely more people than police brutality.

And yet, I'm 100% certain that you were more angry and more generally had more emotion stirred within you watching a police officer kneel on George Floyd's neck for eight minutes than you have been by any health care story you have ever read in your life. It's not necessarily rational, it's human emotion.

At this point even the pants would probably test positive.

What point is this post trying to make?  Where I am the weather has be beautiful all week, in the low 70s/high 60s during the day.  And while my state isn’t at the center of the surge, we still have the most cases we’ve ever seen.

High humidity and very cold temps might make it easier to spread. I think that's the current belief.

Possibly because it forces people indoors and in enclosed spaces more. I'm not certain on the effects of the season itself.

Both parts are real.

But IIRC the studies says it is about cold + dry (not humid as poster above says). High humidity makes particles heavier = less spreading.

It means things are going to accelerate as we get into colder months and people are staying indoors more.

Using the same metrics as this summer (not entirely accurate due to testing) this is a map of states by severity of the outbreak.
Even if you adjust for more testing...the picture still is not very rosy.

https://www.yapms.com/app/?m=4xfa

The situation is bad, and I can confirm as someone in a deep red state with parents who have coworkers doing stuff in the ICU, that the hospital situation isn’t looking great in any way. I am not going to share much, but it’s bad. Like March level, and it’s only getting worse.

If you are in a State in the darkest red, PLEASE stay home when possible. Obviously go out for work and essential purposes, but otherwise stay home, and wear a mask at all times in public. I can’t make any of you on here do anything, but just don’t be a useless jerk, do the right thing for once.

Additionally, if you have old/high-risk relatives in Iowa, South Dakota, or North Dakota...I would suggest calling them or FaceTiming them sooner rather than later in case the worst happens (it won’t if they are careful but you never know)

We will survive this horrid winter, but only if we can collectively have even a degree of common sense and human decency (in other words we are screwed)

No it’s dry temps and cold air.
A lot of respiratory viruses transmit well with those conditions, this isn’t completely unheard of before.

More than 180k cases today. sh**t is getting all too real. And it is clearly going to keep getting worse. The rate at which we are approaching the 200k cases per day marker is startling. Illinois alone is with 15k+ confirmed cases today, which is higher than CA or TX got in previous surges. The bad thing is there is no sign of any sort of deceleration, and policymakers (ha) are so far showing no signs of serious reaction. A relative of mine recently had a serious non-covid medical condition that required hospitalization, and was only barely able to get a hospital bed.
