This is an interesting article about the CDC's messaging, and the criticisms which have been made of that messaging. Walensky appears to show no signs of relenting on the mask guidance, and she still seems to be talking about the pandemic as if we were in pre-vaccine days-at least, that is what her critics have said. There are inconsistencies between what she has said, and what has been said by Dr. Fauci. And there are those within the CDC who are frustrated with the situation and aren't sure how it's going to conclude. The article does also point out the vaccine hesitancy which we've seen among the Republican base, and discusses how the viability of booster shots can be doubted, when we still have so many completely unvaccinated people in this country (on the order of 60 million or more).

I think boosters are definitely effective for the person getting the booster (if you're in a group that needs them). They won't make much of a dent on the overall pandemic though with so many unvaxxed.

Unfortunately at this point the only viable option is for as many as possible to protect themselves from whatever new strain the antivax population will eventually produce.

CDC recommends giving Covid-19 vaccine to kids ages 5 to 11

US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said Tuesday evening she was endorsing a recommendation to vaccinate children ages 5-11 against Covid-19, clearing the way for immediate vaccination of the youngest age group yet in the United States.

"CDC now expands vaccine recommendations to about 28 million children in the United States in this age group and allows providers to begin vaccinating them as soon as possible," the agency said in a statement.

"We know millions of parents are eager to get their children vaccinated and with this decision, we now have recommended that about 28 million children receive a COVID-19 vaccine," Walensky said.

Perception and reality are two different things.

COVID-19 is still killing people that it infects. That has not changed. People inoculated against it can get it but are far less likely to get serious complications or to die from it.

Those who got inoculated early (like me) now include people with booster shots.

Reality is that nearly 750,000 people are dead. That cannot be random. It may have severe impacts upon some occupational categories. You can tell me what people are most likely to get COVID-19 and be no longer able to work in the jobs that they had before it. I'm guessing that the people most likely to get COVID-19 at its worst are people in the political category of "MAGA" types. We have the scale of losses that we can expect in conventional warfare in a shorter time between the Anglo-American (invasion? liberation?) of Sicily and V-J Day.   

Demographics of death are grossly uneven, and in a country so polarized politically as America is, demographics decide political races even more than political competence. We will not see the full effect until at least 2022.

I expect a fourth wave relating to super-spreader events such as Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations.

They should be clearer with this ambition, perhaps by weighing up new restriction against clear criteria of either high numbers hospitalised or rapidly rising hospitalisations, with only a bit of minimal consideration of case numbers in case they are growing exponentially. The unvaccinated will get infected eventually, unfortunately that means there are many tens of thousands probably still left to die. This does need to be spread out though-which is hard with the Delta variant-so that at least the unacceptable outcome of rationing healthcare, avoidable deaths and harms to non Covid patients doesn't happen. Plus, the vaccination rate could rise slightly and as time goes by the vaccinated may be more protected because of both boosters and better treatments, so that's another reason why if it's not too costly, flattened curves are still better than exponential ones.

Vaccine rule for larger employers, federal contractors and certain health care workers to take effect January 4

The Biden administration announced Thursday that its vaccine rules applying to private businesses with 100 or more employees, certain health care workers and federal contractors will take effect January 4.

The rules stipulate that employees that fall into those groups will need to have received the necessary shots to be fully vaccinated, either two doses of Pfizer or Moderna's vaccine or one dose of Johnson & Johnson's vaccine, by January 4.

Eighty-four million employees working at large employers and 17 million health care workers at facilities participating in Medicare and Medicaid will be covered by the rules implemented by the Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

"Together the OSHA and CMS rules, along with the other policies the administration has previously implemented means that over two thirds of all workers in the United States are now covered by vaccination policies," a senior administration official said, discussing the new rules.

Thank you for the tip=off. The substance is real, and it has nothing to do with any demonic entity. It's an enzyme, with the -ase suffix so indicating.

Journalists need be wary of stories too good to be true. The schmuck could have checked it out here:

Pfizer released preliminary results Friday of its study of 775 adults. Patients who received the company’s drug along with another antiviral shortly after showing COVID-19 symptoms had an 89% reduction in their combined rate of hospitalization or death after a month, compared to patients taking a dummy pill. Fewer than 1% of patients taking the drug needed to be hospitalized and no one died. In the comparison group, 7% were hospitalized and there were seven deaths.

“We were hoping that we had something extraordinary, but it’s rare that you see great drugs come through with almost 90% efficacy and 100% protection for death,” said Dr. Mikael Dolsten, Pfizer’s chief scientific officer, in an interview.

Study participants were unvaccinated, with mild-to-moderate COVID-19, and were considered high risk for hospitalization due to health problems like obesity, diabetes or heart disease. Treatment began within three to five days of initial symptoms, and lasted for five days. Patients who received the drug earlier showed slightly better results, underscoring the need for speedy testing and treatment.

Pfizer reported few details on side effects but said rates of problems were similar between the groups at about 20%.

An independent group of medical experts monitoring the trial recommended stopping it early, standard procedure when interim results show such a clear benefit. The data have not yet been published for outside review, the normal process for vetting new medical research.
