If Newsom is committed to picking a Black woman, but he isn’t willing to appoint the one Black woman supported by the CBC and the Black CA establishment then who was his commitment even for?

For what it’s worth, I think if this had all happened in April, Newsom would have just appointed Lee without question - it’s perfectly beneficial for him to do so. His more recent statements seem to be a result of being close enough to the election that he thought he would anger people if he didn’t say anything of the sort.

Her inability to gain any traction in the polls definitely makes it trickier as well.

If he appoints Lee, it'll be the equivalent of urinating on California voters' feet with both middle fingers raised high in the air.  It'll also be an exceptionally pathetic and pointless display of both cowardice and general weakness.

Yes, but this is not new for Newsom; the man has spent the last five years ensuring there would never be a real electoral choice between multiple Democrats in any statewide race.

This I have to disagree with. If Lee is appointed and wins it still means Newsom gets a fellow ex-Willie Brown lackey in the seat as opposed to one of two House members from LA who have no reason to be beholden to him. Is it embarrassing after his previous statement? Yeah, of course. Is it a political loss? No.

Malia Cohen would be the most ideal appointment and I hope it's her, but it probably won't be.

Press X to doubt.  Media wishcasting does not make it so.
Also reminder that this is The Daily Mail.

What IS the daily mail? Some tabloid piece or the British answer to Fox News?

Worse than either.

If Lee does get nominated but fails to win the election that's going to be an incredibly humiliating end to her political career. And I'm not sure incumbency is enough of an advantage to ensure her victory.

I guess Lee literally bullied her way into a seat.

https://twitter.com/andrewdesiderio/status/1708600537367621936

At least we aren’t getting Senator Schiff

No? If anything this works again Lee. Weber, for instance, had said she doesn’t want a seat with a time limit on it. This could entice some of Lee’s supporters to break ranks and accept an appointment. Before there was no reason for someone to leave their current position and burn their political bridges. Now, you could have, say Bass or Cohen, be appointed and Lee’s supporters would be put in a bind of how to approach this new wrench in the system.

As I said before, a limited appointment, not appointing a candidate, and appointing a black woman was a paradox of Newsom’s own making. He had to break one of his promises, and he chose the smartest one.

Weber's one of the potential picks who fielded concerns to Newsom that he should pick Lee per WaPo, & Bass is fully behind Lee, as is Cohen. I honestly think - as DT speculates - that no Black woman public official he offered the appointment to was willing to go against Lee & take it. Now, with the CBC very explicitly behind her too, incl. one Jim Clyburn, & Gavin clearly having his eyes set on '28...

You’re right in they’re all lined up behind Lee, but by Newsom opening the door to a life long senate career he might be able to ply one away into the senate. It’s far from a guarantee, but now the job atleast has some appeal to it. Personal interest can easily win out in such a scenario.

Truth be told I think this whole situation has basically killed any of Newsom’s political support for a presidential run.

Seems like the Lee announcement could come as early as tomorrow then?

I think this would just about shut out Porter's already slim chances. She should run for her House seat which could very well flip without her.

As an aside, this whole saga (and the same thing that happened with Harris vacating her seat in 2021) really shows how untenable California is as a single state, at least when it comes to effective representation of its large population and disparate groups that are splintered along racial, ethnic, and geographic lines. Or just an implication of how dumb the Senate is set up, regardless of what the founding fathers thought.

Or create the ugliest total-war primary outside of the Presidency in Democratic party history.

She’s still going to come in third place. Why would this whole sordid thing make anyone new want to vote for her?

Because from now on, every time Porter or Schiff campaigns, there will be hordes of Bernie Bros screaming "Why are you trying to steal Barbara Lee's Senate seat? That's a Black woman's seat!". They'll be backed up by Newsom's network, to protect his investment, and by the CBC because she's one of them. The goal will be to ensure Porter and Schiff never make it to the primary.

I don't think it'll work, but it'll do a lot of damage.

no one is entitled to a seat. Again, this whole thing would push me to Porter. I won't be disappointed if Lee ends up winning a full term, but this whole episode puts a bad taste in my mouth.
