McCarthy is the GOP establishment?  He is Trump's boy

He's literally the Speaker of the House and was Minority Leader 2019-2023 lmao, you literally can't get more establishment than that
He was Majority Leader from 2014-2019. Majority Whip since 2011. Deputy Whip since 2009. He was first elected in 2006!

Dude has been in leadership nearly his entire time in congress. Long before Trump.

You know what is hillarious? When a reporter asked him why it took so many votes to elect him speaker. He played it off like its a good thing. He said "We learned how to govern". Dude, you have lead the caucus for more than a decade, you just now learned to govern?

Of course, 75% of the Republican house caucus was elected after 2016 so its a very different party now

The plan is he turns himself in, in New York on Monday. He'll be fingerprinted and photographed (mug shot). Since it's a felony he should be put in handcuffs but they might make an exception for him for that. He'll be arraigned. And then he'll be released without any bail set since it's a non violent offense.

I was wrong about Monday. His attorney just confirmed the arraignment will be on Tuesday.

To be fair, it's one thing to govern a party and it's another thing to govern a country.

It does seem the GOP might be salvageable. There was an immense air of disloyalty after Trump’s election, but people who aren’t vocally calling out the Bragg are being pushed out of the party. Maybe a lot of us unaffiliated too soon.

Hopefully the bloodthirsty nazi fascists masquerading as “conservatives” are shown the door.

This should tell us what the GOP Establishment is thinking. If they're not simply saying "the legal process should continue as followed" then they're not subtly telling people to support somebody else. That's more bad news for DeSantis.

But there should be more indictments for the more serious crimes, so I guess we'll see. When this is over we'll probably have triple-digit charges.

McCarthy is the GOP establishment?  He is Trump's boy...we'll see what other Republicans in Congress say.  I doubt McConnell or most Senate Republicans will come to a full-throated defense of Trump, for example.

Trump is the GOP establishment.

Given the number of counts, is it possible he’s been indicted for stuff unrelated to Stormy Daniels?
Like, at some point weren’t they investigating a wide range of tax fraud stuff?

Yes, because large donors, think tanks, mainstream conservative media, and elected party leaders have lined up to support him.

I think so. There's been a lot of speculation he might be indicted for more than just Daniels stuff. But it was just speculation. Now it seems a lot more likely. Although I think CNN is the only outlet reporting the number of counts so far.

DeSantis says Florida wouldn’t aid Trump’s extradition to New York.

Quote
Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, who is widely expected to challenge Donald J. Trump for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, called the indictment of Mr. Trump “un-American” and said that his state “will not assist in an extradition request” should one come from New York authorities.

Earlier this month, Mr. DeSantis took two days after Mr. Trump inaccurately predicted an imminent arrest to comment, and at the time he demurred on the potential role that he or his state — home to Mr. Trump, who lives at Mar-a-Lago, his private club in Palm Beach — would play in potentially extraditing Mr. Trump to New York.

Just now from the NYT; God that's a crazy headline to even be reading.

In 1987, the Supreme Court ruled in Puerto Rico v. Branstad that individual state governors cannot prevent extradition of people to another state where there is an active arrest warrant against said people.

Top minds of Atlas

This story died off quick as can be.

Might’ve been a fundraising ploy. Doesn’t seem this is happening.

Just as I suspect. Trump will never be arrested. He’ll never be charged. It’s been fantasy talk since 2016

The grand jury keeps getting more an more incompetent, yet an indictment is supposed to "hurt" him.

Don't get your hopes up for next week either.

If I had to bet money, I don't think Trump will be indicted. I'll believe it when I see it. Its been 8 years of investigations.

I'll admit, I was wrong. Holy cow was I wrong. I still don't think Trump will ever see the inside of a cell but maybe I'm wrong again.

I was wrong, I'm surprised Bragg decided to end Dems' 2024 hopes by indicting Trump for paying off a porn star.

Has he ever been charged criminally before? This isn't like the 100,000 times he's been sued for skipping out on paying his bills. This is a felony we're talking about. I HIGHLY doubt any DA would bring charges against a former president unless the evidence was there.

I genuinely don't know how you can think that this helps Trump in a general.

Whether an indictment helps or hurts (assuming it gets wrapped up by November 2024) is immaterial — if this ends in a conviction, it hurts (obviously), easy to see how a high-profile acquittal probably helps. Depends on your view of the strength of the case.

Mike Pence is being interviewed by Wolf Blitzer and is calling the indictment an outrage. His words come as no surprise to me.

The problem with that logic is that it's unethical to not indict someone whether or not the political ramifications are good or bad. That said no indictment has ever been good for a campaign and Trump was already facing a repeat of 2020 as it was.

Yeah, so many people were eager to vote for Biden and now they're going to vote for Trump because he's been indicted in a criminal investigation, and for no other reason. They're big fans of Biden's policies but they just can't bear to deny the Republican under indictment their vote. I know that this forum attracts a lot of bottom-of-the-barrel commentary, but can you not comprehend how out of touch with reality your posts are?
