The former president was told that he could appear before a Manhattan grand jury next week if he wishes to testify, a strong indication that an indictment could soon follow.

The Manhattan district attorney’s office recently signaled to Donald J. Trump’s lawyers that he could face criminal charges for his role in the payment of hush money to a porn star, the strongest indication yet that prosecutors are nearing an indictment of the former president, according to four people with knowledge of the matter.

The prosecutors offered Mr. Trump the chance to testify next week before the grand jury that has been hearing evidence in the potential case, the people said. Such offers almost always indicate an indictment is close; it would be unusual for the district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, to notify a potential defendant without ultimately seeking charges against him.

In New York, potential defendants have the right to answer questions in the grand jury before they are indicted, but they rarely testify, and Mr. Trump is likely to decline the offer. His lawyers could also meet privately with the prosecutors in hopes of fending off criminal charges.

Any case would mark the first indictment of a former American president, and could upend the 2024 presidential race. It would also elevate Mr. Bragg to the national stage, though not without risk.

Trump to meet with legal team on strategy for hush-money probe

Lawyers for Donald Trump are meeting with the former president in Florida this weekend to discuss how to handle the latest developments in a Manhattan probe focused on a hush money payment during the 2016 campaign.

Joe Tacopina, one of Trump's attorneys, told NBC News on Friday that Trump's lawyers have "no plans" to meet with the Manhattan District Attorney's office, which has convened a grand jury to look into a payment to Stormy Daniels, the actress who said she slept with Trump before he became president.

NBC News reported Thursday that Trump was invited to testify before the grand jury. Trump’s lawyers have not said whether he will accept the invitation, and the district attorney's office has declined to comment on the matter.

"We are not convinced they will bring a case, but if so we will deal with it," Tacopina said Friday.

So the indictment is probably coming very soon, maybe days.

The lawyers have already met with the DA to persuade him not to indict. Michael Cohen completes his testimony to the grand jury on Wednesday. After that, there's nothing left to do but request an indictment.

Trump campaign blasts Manhattan DA ‘witch hunt’ as possibility of indictment nears

Former President Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign blasted Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s investigation into him as a “witch hunt” ahead of a possible indictment that might be issued against him.

Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement on Thursday that Trump is “completely innocent” and did “nothing wrong.” He said Democrats have attacked Trump since before he was first elected as president and are trying again because Trump is leading in the polls “by a large margin” against both Republicans and Democrats.

Multiple agencies are discussing potential security plans for in and around the Manhattan Criminal Court in case Trump is charged in connection with an alleged hush money payment to Stormy Daniels.

Local, state and federal law enforcement and security agencies are preparing for the possibility that former President Donald Trump is indicted as early as next week, according to five senior officials familiar with the preparations.

Law enforcement agencies are conducting preliminary security assessments, the officials said, and are discussing potential security plans in and around the Manhattan Criminal Court, at 100 Centre Street, in case Trump is charged in connection with an alleged hush money payment to Stormy Daniels and travels to New York to face any charges.

The officials stress that the interagency conversations and planning are precautionary in nature because no charges have been filed.

Yeah, this is frankly a no-brainer. Although I have zero doubt that Trump and pretty much any one of his attorneys lack the ethics to not ignore this rule at their convenience, I suspect the courts and bar associations will force them to.

This is Manhattan DA, not the feds. The feds declined to prosecute for this because he was President and decided not to resurrect the case when he left office. Bragg is prosecuting this now because the statute of limitations runs out this year. He's still working on a larger case regarding things like tax fraud and bank fraud, stuff the AG filed the civil suit over. But we don't know if that will lead to any charges.

Didn’t some prosecutors resign from his office because he wasn’t moving forward with the fraud case? I wonder why he’s going forward with this but not that.
