Arguably the best collection of attacking players on the planet, and England played with 7 defensive outfield players most of the match. All that needs to be said, really.

Gosh, some England fans are acting like Trumpists wanting to overturn the election results.

I guess Southgate won't be the new Labour leader after all?

Meh, you win major tournaments with good defenses. France in 2018 were a boring side despite having Mbappe and Griezmann. I don't blame Southgate for being conservative.

Why Saka was the fifth penalty taker though?

Italy...just a textbook performance by the centre-back pairing. Mourinho once said that Bonucci and Chiellini could write a phd for Harvard on defending. he is dead right.

Congrats to a young Italian side and an Italy tha, like many, has suffered a lot this year. In the end apart from the last 16 minutes against us they did play good football through the tournament and tenacity in key moments. Spain were really the only team to genuinely outplay them but they had the human cheatcode that is Busquets.

Come on, if he was leader he'd already be 20 points ahead.

1. England lost because of a series of serious tactical errors: not pressing more aggressively after the first goal when Italy were in disarray, not playing for a second goal in the second half or extra time, subbing on two players for penalties right at the end meaning no time for them to get their eyes in, putting on the poor boy for that most difficult of shots.

2. Italy were the better side and would have been furious had they lost, but they were also a brutal and unpleasant one who benefited from light-touch refereeing. In particular that animal should have been sent off rather than booked for the disgusting attack on Saka.

3. Hard not to suspect that some of that light-touch refereeing was related to the bad smell around England due to that heinous idiot in the crowd with the laser at the last match.

England's loss does not call for racist abuse like this.....and they want to know why they kneel

Morons at ESPN were talking post-match about how this Italy team "had no stars"... they have the most in-demand goalkeeper on the planet, two legends in central defense, PSG's star playmaker, and a 3-time Serie A leading goalscorer who beat out the likes of Tevez, Higuain, Lukaku, and a certain Portuguese forward nobody's ever heard of before.

Not quite the star power of Kalvin Phillips though, I guess.

What they mean is "they're all in Serie A and we stuck that sh**t on ESPN+, so how could any of them be famous? They're on ESPN+ for Christ's sake!"

PSG, incidentally, is on some even more obscure online subscription service, and Serie A is moving to CBS next season, so not much of a reason for the four letter to try to talk it up

First of all, it's hilarious that the Daily Mail is calling out their own readership here, but whatever.  I'll take it.

Second, other than racist abuse of their own players, booing opposing teams' national anthems, shining lasers at the opposing goalkeeper's face, bullying 10 year old girls, and general iNgErLaNd!! iTs cOmInG hOmE obnoxiousness, does anyone have any suggestions on why the whole world (including Scotland and Wales) wanted Italy to win?

Also worth posting:

Meanwhile, look at any of these pictures of scenes in Italian cities. No glass in the street.

To keep on with the political theme, a little bird told me elsewhere that Italy did a favour to British leftists by depriving BoJo of a rally effect. I replied to him "He will get one. In Scotland."  Wink

I think it’s safe to say that England will not be hosting a major tournament for a long time now. I hope all the Italy fans got home safely.

One interesting fact is that Emerson and Jorginho are now double European champions - with the club (Chelsea) and with the national team (Italy). Fairly remarkable for two players both born in South America.

Well, yes, the final was not being hosted there. There's certainly a toxic element to Ingerland fan culture and it needs to be dealt with more seriously than it has been, but football related violence is not exactly unknown in Italy and there are some extremely rancid elements to wider fan culture there as well.

The man who scored Italy's equaliser once argued that the racist abuse that a black team-mate had recieved from fans of another club (this in the Italian domestic league where open racist chants against non-white players remain a problem, incidentally) was his black team-mates fault for not being sufficiently demure.

Again, there are real problems with Ingerland fan culture and they do need to be dealt with (there's been a tendency recently to laugh it off and act as if it's all ironic, and, well, clearly it is isn't) but the idea that English football culture is uniquely Problematic is absolute rubbish.

Honestly, if England isn't sanctioned for the racist abuse of players/fan violence as a result of losing the Euro's I might riot.

I think barring them from the 2022 World Cup would be the best way to send a clear message that this won't be tolerated going forward.
