For a player to have their name on the cup, he must play (or dress for goalies) at least 41 regular season games or one finals game, or have a successful petition for a non-qualifying player. MLB is very loose with its World Series ring automatic qualification (finish the season on the team that wins). Why is hockey so exclusive?

It's a cup, not a ring.

I thought a name on the cup is the NHL’s honor equivalent to a championship ring.

The NHL's equivalent to a championship ring is a championship ring. Players who do not qualify for their name on the cup often still receive a ring.

The primary reason is probably that they don't want to rebuild the Cup again too soon because it has too many bands. It's already had base rings retired twice now because it was growing too unwieldy.
