Update trade data from Russia.  The PRC and Turkey import surge continue.   It seems imports from Japan is picking up a bit.  I am sure part of the Turkey import surge is what Russians call "parallel imports" where Russians set up dummy businesses in Turkey and import needed products from the collective West and once they arrive immediately ship them to Russia.

"Russia Did Most Oil Drilling in Decade Even as Sanctions Hit"

Quote
Russian companies did the most drilling at their oil fields in more than a decade last year, with little sign that international sanctions or the departure of some major Western firms directly harmed so-called upstream operations. This helps to explain how the country’s oil production rebounded in the second half of 2022 even as further restrictions were imposed on its exports.

In general, this was the end of the "offensive of the Russian army on the entire Donetsk front" widely announced over the network by "cheers-military corps". Complemented by the rebellion (refusal to take the position) of the battalion of Tuvinian nomads and not only (in principle, I do not report anything about this kind of events until they are "leaked" by someone into the network and become publicly available).

Girkin from the above politico article claims that the Tuvans (Siberian minority on the Chinese border) refused to fight or take a position which helped cause the turkey shoot in Vuhledar.

Here is where the difference between the two strains of Russian nationalism matters. Girkin is a Russkiy nationalist, he believes that Russia should shed or expel its Caucasian, Turkic and, Mongol minorities to create a state with only East Slavs. To him, Ukrainians are lost sons of Russia poisoned by the West to hate their Russian motherland.
Putin and most of the Kremlin are Rossiyan nationalists, they believe in a multiethnic Russia led by Russians to civilize their neighbors. They both treat minorities poorly, but the Kremlin certainly does not mind elevating certain groups as model minorities. You can see this in the media they produce, I remember watching a clip posted by Russian state propagandists where they purportedly show Buryats and Chechens working harmoniously in one unit. On the other hand Girkin has made more than one subtle attack on the fighting abilities of Tuvans, Chechens and Tatars.

In Soviet Russia police bribe you:

That's strange. Usually, the traffic police agree to funnel a cut their bribes to their bosses like a form of taxation.

It hasn't. Ukraine made a small counter attack to the small forest south-west of Ivanivske... and that's about it. The highway from Chasiv Yar is still under fire control and Paraskoviivka is about to fall soon.

Nothing really has changed. Also, lol - that Prigozhin quote is him implying that Ukraininans are falling for the "meat grinder" trap - sending reinforcements to the "non-strategic city". You sometimes unironically parrot Russian talking points.

For what reasons wouldn't Switzerland do it? Neutrality? I dunno how you can seriously be in a war like this where right and wrong are more visible than black and white.

Yes, due to neutrality. Although as I understand it there's a discourse underway in Switzerland right now to soften that up in the wake of the Ukraine war... it's just not happening fast enough.

"Ukraine Faces Painful Choice as Russia Tightens Chokehold on Bakhmut"

Quote
The costly battle of attrition could presage the shape of the war to come. Lacking the trained personnel and equipment needed to wage combined-arms-maneuver warfare, Russia is using a newfound manpower advantage to gain territory in the east, at a heavy price.
But the battle for Bakhmut is costly for Ukraine, too. And if the soldiers there get cut off and suffer heavy losses it could erode domestic and international confidence in President Volodymyr Zelensky's administration.

The USA, anonymously, now wants to put some caps on the scale of help despite its claims of "As long as it takes"

Quote
"We will continue to try to impress upon them that we can't do anything and everything forever," said one senior administration official, referring to Ukraine's leaders. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive diplomatic matters, added that it was the administration's "very strong view" that it will be hard to keep getting the same level of security and economic assistance from Congress.
"'As long as it takes' pertains to the amount of conflict," the official added. "It doesn't pertain to the amount of assistance."

It’s not about putting caps on it’s about concern that the Putin simps in congress are going to cut funding so they’re saying Ukraine should maximize what it’s getting now

Some backtracking on Leopard 2 from Netherlands and Denmark.  The main problem with Leopard 1 tanks is that there is no ammo for these old tanks and Switzerland refuses to provide them which means Germany has to make them from scratch.

How much of a mindless Putin fanboy do you have to be in order to post "Russia tightens hold on Bakhmut" right below a post on successful Ukrainian counter-offensives in Bakhmut?
