I would take this with a heap of salt as previous such claims haven't come to much, but the Ukrainians are claiming to have struck and badly damaged the Moskva guided missile cruiser. It is the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet, and the ship involved in the "Russian warship go **** yourself" exchange. They claim to have got it with two indigenous Neptune cruise missiles.

The Moskva was launched in 1979 and commissioned in 1982! The Russian Navy really is just a Soviet era museum.

The oldest cruiser in US Navy service is the Bunker Hill, commissioned on September 20, 1986, which is scheduled to be decommissioned next year.

Edit: Out of curiosity, I looked up when the ship the Ukrainians sunk in Berdyansk started serivce. The amphibious warfare ship Saratov was commissioned on August 18, 1966!

Although long in the tooth, the Moskva has the most comprehensive air defenses in the Black Sea Fleet, part of its role is providing anti-air cover for the others. So if it is gone the rest are more vulnerable if they move too far away from Crimean coast.

Edit: I notice "Tyre Trent" had the same idea,

Some Ukrainian neo-Nazi scum apparently decided to give Putin a little break and serve him some microwave-ready propaganda a few weeks before the war.

The UA authorities need to dig up something on these people and take them off the streets.

Agreed. These helicopters are scrap metal for the US anyway, so why not give it to them if they can use it.

The classic Soviet "British intelligence plot". Russia would only be saying stuff like this if there were atrocities committed in Sumy Oblast that will be discovered soon.

Well, what do you know?

Extraordinary claims requires proof. I'll wait for visual confirmation. Random bits of radio chatter isn't proof btw, those can be easily faked.

I love how this Alex Rubinstein person expects us to believe that some gang leader is representative of Ukrainian thinking whereas the President of Russia, head of the country's largest church, news anchors on state television, etc. etc. etc. are not representative of Russian thinking.

More Americans think the United States is responsible (somehow) for Putin invading Ukraine than do Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Brazil.  And South Africa.  So pretty much matching India.

Re: Germany

"The problem is sitting in the Chancellery. Mr. Scholz is talking about a turning point, but he's not implementing it sufficiently and it needs significantly more leadership. We are massively losing standing with all our neighbours at the moment." - Anton Hofreiter, former Green caucus leader in the German Bundestag and current chair of the Bundestag committee on European affairs.

That's pretty harsh language coming from one of Scholz' governing partners, although Hofreiter probably wouldn't have been as harsh had he still been the caucus leader instead of a committee chairman, I guess.

Holy crap let’s go Ukraine! Hitting the Black Sea flagship opens the southern front for Ukrainian air support 😁

The Russian announcement doesn't exclude the possibility it was a Ukrainian missile, just claims the ammunition detonated as a "result of a fire". No s*** Sherlock, ammunition doesn't just spontaneously combust. I wonder how that fire started? It's not like there's a war going on or anything.

This is the whole thing translated by google: "The ammunition detonated as a result of a fire on the Moskva missile cruiser, the Russian Defense Ministry said. The crew was completely evacuated. The reasons for the incident are being established."
