I'm starting to think our fears of post-election violence were overblown.

(Not saying there won't be small pockets of unrest, but so far, thousands of Trump supporters haven't taken to the streets.)

*fingers crossed*

Well, they made at least half-hearted efforts and had to be turned back by police from forcing their way into ballot counting centers, and at least one family of violent radicals from Virginia parently were stopped from driving up to bomb the Philadelphia Convention Center, but so far it hasn't been so bad. Much better than anticipated to be honest

I was busy and not online today so obviously I have missed a lot.

There is no reason not to call this. AZ and Nevada could have been called yesterday, Georgia and Penn in the AM hours when Biden formally took the lead. Trump is not going to come back to win in any of those states, the numbers are not there based on the composition of the remaining ballots. None of the reasons I've heard (wanting to time it with a Biden victory speech, being nervous about legal challenges or Trump tantrums) are good ones. Call the race when you know the winner, which we do.

It's also clear much of the delay in counting (particularly in Penn and Nevada) has been due to Trump obstructing the process with constant frivolous lawsuits and injunctions. He wants to drag it out as long as possible so he can say "see how long this is taking, there must be fraud" even though it's his fault.

I am pleasantly surprised so far.  I was half-expecting Oklahoma City-style bombings, or maybe that will happen after Biden is inaugurated...

Just to be clear we have a candidate that has over a 99% certainty to have won, his opponent is openly campaigning to stop counting and throw out ballots, and the media has spent two days now pretending it’s anyone’s game.

Also, the coverage after an overwhelming (by US political standards) majority chose one candidate over the other is all ‘closely divided nation’ and ‘why didn’t the winner do better’.

That's abit of a stretch. I've watched alot of news today and it seems like the media is mostly adamant Biden's the favorite but Trump might still have a chance because of *fill in the blank*.

Maybe non-AP/Fox media outlets are afraid to call Nevada because they think that would trigger AP/Fox to call it too therefore making AP/Fox the first media outlets to project Biden as the winner of the election days in advance of the others.

And AP/Fox are not calling Nevada before any of the others do because they're not so sure about Arizona anymore at the moment but don't want to admit that openly (and neither don't they want to project Biden as the winner of the election on that shaky grounds).

It's a Mexican stand-off, essentially.

Matt Stevens (NYT): Officials in Maricopa County, Ariz., expect to release tens of thousands of newly recorded votes around 9 p.m. ET. The remaining votes there will be key to deciding a tight race.

They'd better stick to this.

At this rate I'm starting to wonder if they're even going to call the election until Biden's lead is above the remaining unreported votes in every single state.

County was 57-41 Biden as of yesterday.

You mean 58-40 Trump?

True. My fault.
Trump vastly falling short, then.

You scared me for a second there. Hopefully the Maricopa vote dump is that one out of Gallego's district that we've been hearing about, and settle this state once and for all.

Hopefully that will be enough to call AZ and therefore NV.

If they can call AZ, maybe they can call NV as well and end this nightmare.

Yeah, the outstanding military/overseas ballots aren't going to make a material difference:

It's not quite as nightmarish as it could have been if we were only focusing on one state a la 2000. That was always going to be the worst case scenario, and thankfully we've been spared of it.

Unless you meant the nightmare of Trump's whole presidency. In that case it isn't over until January 20, 2021.

No one can convince me the map wouldn't look better with Biden winning North Carolina instead of Georgia.

Armed protesters showing up at polling sites demanding they stop counting votes is about as bad as it gets and not something that should ever happen in America.

Hearing a report that the Biden campaign actually requested that networks not call any remaining state until his lead is above 0.5%.

Still doesn't explain Nevada though....

If there's any justice in this world, Nevada gets called on page 777.

Yeah, it does look way better. But the way I see it, Georgia sticking out so blatantly is like how Minnesota did in 2016. It's yet another mirror of that map. So for that reason I've grown to want to see it be settled.

Not calling Arizona (for the news outlets that didn't already call it) until the supposedly big vote dump at 9ET is understandable despite Biden's lead being above 0.5% there, I guess...
