Terrible news about Woodstock
« on: August 8, 1969, 8:30:25 am »

So I checked the NY election results again. Turns out the festival is being held in a county THAT VOTED FOR RICHARD NIXON BY THREE POINTS LAST NOVEMBER! If they had held it in Buffalo, I could have traveled through Canada and then only entered Humphrey precincts once I crossed the border near Niagara Falls. But no, the man wouldn't allow that. Not groovy!

Ugh, I am so f[inks] mad! I really want to see this in person, but standing in a place of Tricky Dick loyalists would feel so dirty. I need to really think this one over.

Watch Labour MPs singing 'The Red Flag' to mourn the downfall of the Government: BBC video
« on: March 29th, 1979, 1:00:25 am »

Just awful. Why must it have come to this? I have a sense of foreboding about how the country might go. Ted Heath putting controls on union power was good, and Labour empowered the trade unions too much, but the Tories now will have an even more unbalanced policy under Mrs. Thatcher. I don't trust her. Unions are a key part of the social framework of this country and a Conservative Party that is at war with the unions does not deserve to govern the country. I want Ted Heath back. I don't trust union leadership much, but I don't trust Thatcher even more. I'm voting for my local Labour or Liberal candidate in the upcoming general election. And I'm going to go about it flat out!

So sick of these unions striking, they do so much harm to the British economy . I hope the Conservatives do what it takes to destroy the risk that these unions do to  me and my community. Medical workers where I am were slow to deal with a medical emergency that negatively hurt me and my gran , don't they realize other things matter than their pay levels in an economy where inflation they cause hurts everyone? Godspeed to you Lady Thatcher, put those union leaders in their place.

As someone who finds Scottish nationalism rather silly, I hope the SNP doesn't do well in the upcoming election. Labour is not really very wrong to call them Tartan Tories...I could playfully joke they should be taking the Conservative whip.

It is ironic that they have been the most successful from a policy point-of-view under this government than in any other and yet they still voted to bring it down. Their strategy here makes some sense, but it's just nonsensical as a whole. I'm impressed with their courage, though. At least they aren't going out quietly.

As a (disenchanted) SNP supporter I feel this was a bad decision. We stood for our principles, yes, but at what cost?
I feel this is probably a mistake as it will give Labour so much ammunition to attack us on. Labour did its part to live up to its agreements with us...it is the voters of Scotland who failed us. We need to work diligently in the coming years to convince the public to support a Scottish Parliament and eventual independence in the future.

This is a sad day for Britain. This Winter of Discontent - grossly exaggerated in the press as it is - portends trouble for what is good in Britain. I have a bad feeling about this upcoming election.

As for myself...at least me, I'll keep the Red Flag flying here.

I sure hope Britain wins. I mean, slavery has been abolished in England for centuries, while most of our colonies still allow it! Our most progressive, liberal politicians would be considered as conservatives in England and most of Europe.

To be honest, I think all of our presidents deserve the same fate, maybe even worse. Considering America’s invasion of the Northwestern Indian Confederacy, and all the others acts of imperialism the USA has engaged in with Native Americans, we deserve France-level condemnation.

If Teddy Roosevelt wins in 1916, will he invade Canada?
« on: March 19, 1915, 2:02:56 pm »

I’m being completely serious here. He supported the Spanish American War back in ‘98 and many Republicans are on record saying that Germany’s conduct in this war have been impressive. And given how many Republicans have been reluctant to want to give aid to Britain in the war, I think Roosevelt (or another Republican) may try to invade Canada if they win in the future.

How much aid should the USA give to the Allies?
« on: January 22, 1940, 10:36:45 pm »

As much as possible. When the Republicans win in 1940 (and let’s face it, Roosevelt has no chance- there’s never been a 3 term president before) they will side with Hitler, and it’ll be over for France and the UK. This is the only shot for the Allies to win.

The only unrealistic part about this is thinking SnowLabrador would have thought the Allies had any chance to win at all in 1940.

Is the world going to end?
« on: October 16, 1961, 6:12:34 pm »

The Soviet Union has nuclear weapons stationed in Cuba. Not only that, the United States has nuclear weapons stationed in Turkey. It only takes one of either Kennedy or Khrushchev firing a missile to destroy human civilization.

If either the United States or the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics continues its imperialistic foreign policy, we might see the other country fire a retaliatory nuclear weapon. Should this happen, the other country might be pressured to retaliate back with more nuclear firepower. Keep doing this, and you would deplete the entire global supply of almost 30K nuclear weapons, and you would have an extinct human race.

I genuinely fear 1961 might be the final year of human civilization.

I think it's safe to assume after tonight that Carter is on track to win with at least 350, if not close to 400 electoral votes. There is no coming back from this for Ford. Only question is whether Carter can outdo Nixon's numbers in '72.

Yugoslavia and Romania aren’t even connected to the Comecon or operating with the same economic framework, Yugoslavia has free-market co-ops emulating the emerging corporate bogue in Wall Street and Romania operates under esoteric means. Romania has supplied Israel weapons at the height of the Soviet involvement in the regional geopolitical struggle.

The Polish communists are practically part and parcel with their Bulgarian counterparts in being receptive to Soviet happenings and directives without being meddled.

Our esteemed Portuguese lady shows her true colors once again. Why not have such a large hub for every pneumonic plague ravaging the other lands? This simply stems from a Devil-like hatred of our Dear Pope, instead of directing it at the barbarian Golden Horde for the Mongol Plague THEY inflicted.

How sad. I see the term "Mongol Plague" has already spread to this place as well, which will only incite further hatred against the already oppressed Mongolian people, when only Europeans deserve to shoulder the blame for this with our unhygienic and hateful ways.

Edited. Wink

While I agree with you that Yugoslavia was not dominated by the Soviet Union by any stretch (at least beyond the usual influence of having a global power in the neighborhood), and Romania is arguably a bit of an edge case, I think it's totally fair to say that the average Pole perceived their country as being dominated by the Soviet Union in 1976. Romanians might hedge their wording a bit more if they wanted to be academic about it and say something like "Romania was subjugated to communist rule imposed by the Soviets and suffered under a system of communism espoused and supported by Moscow" even if they still had a little more leeway in foreign policy decisions than other countries in Eastern Europe. But as I said, it's an academic distinction more than the popular "feeling" of domination Ford was talking about.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's really much contemporary hard evidence around on the topic, so I'm just basing this on conversations I've had with Eastern Europeans (Romanians in Romania and Poles in America, specifically) and their accounts in the 2010s and 2020s will obviously be shaped by modern experiences (like post-Cold War Russian invasions) more than a dispassionate view of history. But hey, isn't that what this thread is all about?

Will James Meredith solve racial tensions in this country?
« on: April 27, 1991, 8:30:25 am »

James Meredith seems to be expressing positive opinions towards Louisiana gubernatorial candidate David Duke, a former KKK wizard. In my opinion, James Meredith is one of the good ones for supporting David Duke, as he is showing that he can look past racial boundaries and support a Klansman.

Putting aside David Duke's history as a Klansman, he actually has a lot of appeal to Louisiana voters. He is staunchly against affirmative action, and this platform might allow him to win White support within the state and put the Louisiana Republicans back on the map in statewide elections.

More African-Americans should act like James Meredith did: start supporting KKK members, and perhaps racism in this country will be solved. As long as African-Americans keep harboring negative opinions about the KKK, racism will still persist.

Does it blow your mind that Clarence Thomas is probably a Jimi Hendrix fan?
« on: September 10, 1991, 10:44:04 pm »

I mean that's kind of unexpected but seriously, how many black 28 year-olds WEREN'T into Jimi Hendrix when Are You Experienced came out? Odds are likely he at least was at some point and has probably worn a Jimi Hendrix/The Who/Grateful Dead shirt at some point too.

Well played - especially for such a niche audience as the UK threads. First time I’ve ever shown up in one of these - and all my verbal tics are there. The nervy both-sidesism, the unionism, the hypotheticals, the weak snark, the persistent overuse of ‘ironic’. “I am quietly impressed by their courage” is so on-brand it stings.

I’ve always enjoyed this thread - but my only real idea to contribute to it has been a version of the “recently banned users” thread, set in 90s Northern Ireland after a tempban for Gerry Adams starring:
  • a jubilant Ian “Fuzzy Bear” Paisley for the DUP
  • with Punxsutawney Portrush Phil for the Alliance Party
  • BallymenaQuakerGirl and OldSchoolMonarchist for the UUP
  • Social_Democratic_and_LabourJersey for the SDLP
  • Don’t need to come up with a new username for Tony Blair - we already have a “DevoutCentrist” on this forum.
  • I assume Virginia would be Mo Mowlam, but I’m out of puns.

It all felt a tad niche - so I’ll probably just leave it at a bunch of bad forum username puns.

I probably would be completely insufferable in the minds of Atlas Libs from 1979-1991 lol cause it would be nothing but winning in both the US and UK (even the Reagan midterms werent really that bad for the GOP) so I would be gloating a lot lol.

Thanks! I studiously looked at the posts of the posters involved. I guess that hard work paid off!
One thing I kind of regret is not putting the word "dire" in CopelandLeftie's post. But I did put hours of work into that already.

And British you would be very anti-Scargill strike. For you to have pro-union takes during the Winter of Discontent would be nigh unlikely. Hell would sooner freeze over.

Democrats must abandon Bryan if they want to win in 1896
« on: August 19, 1895, 2:04:25 pm »

If this CLOWN is the nominee he will get DESTROYED and ANNIHILATED by McKinley!

This post would be funnier if it were from 1900, in McKinley vs Bryan Round 2.

FDR would be a disaster for the Democratic Party
« on: June 26, 1932, 8:30:25 am »

Franklin Delano Roosevelt would be an absolute disaster for the Democratic Party. He could possibly lose in the biggest landslide since James Monroe's victory in 1820. His insane socialist economics would alienate virtually the entire American public—including laborers—who would view it as mindless government intervention in the economy. Giving people benefits for unemployment sounds like it would promote unemployment, and this "New Deal" that FDR is proposing sounds like a proposal to bankrupt the government. Total BS.

The Democratic Party should have picked someone more moderate to win this easily winnable election; they should have chosen a Bourbon Democrat, like Grover Cleveland. These Democrats have shown their effectiveness at winning in general elections. Instead, they threw away an easily winnable election by picking this radical communist Roosevelt. The Democratic Party needs to learn that moderates are the key to success, not fringe leftists.
