In 1928 and 1988, users would be saying that the Democrats are dying. In 1992, the Republicans would be saying that Bill Clinton doesn't have a chance of winning because of the Republican Wall.

A third of posters would be John Anderson fans in 1980.

I would really love to see this forum's reaction to 1980 because I would be super excited by those results lol.

Not only did Reagan win the Presidency in the landslide, the Safe D Senate turned Republican and the House while it stayed Dem was controlled by the conservatives

tbf, the conservative coalition had controlled the House more often than not since the 1938 midterms.

Not from 1958-1980.

From 1938-1958 yes but not after that until 1980. I believe many Southern Dems in the Nixon era supported economically leftist policies or "populist " policies but many of them retired in the late 70s and were replaced by democrats who were more right-leaning economically or were defeated in the 80 wave and replaced by rigth wing republicans.

I can't believe some posters actually think Wilder will win Southwest Virginia just because DUKAKIS COUNTIES! POPULIST Purple heart COAL STRIKE! As someone who actually lives in this state, I can say with absolute certainty these hicks will never vote for a black man period.

Some maroon avatar posters on the 1992 board are already saying that Wilder would win racist hick Mecca WV because of populist Purple heart UMWA members. Meanwhile, they insist Wilder won't win Prince William County because of "stubborn suburbs."

If Coleman polls less than 60% in Dickenson County I'll leave Atlas.

Actually if IceSpear was around back then he would non stop talk about how racist VA and CA are especially counties like Prince William and Orange while talking about how open minded Appalachia is .

Re: Reaction to Reagan winning the election
« on: November 5, 1980 at 4:32:17 pm »

I went going into the night excpecting Reagan to win by 6-7 points and around 380-390 EV a prediction which got me mocked by so many red avatars and it turns out they were right to mock me because I was very wrong as Reagan won by nearly 10 points and won 489 EV. I was flipping back and forth between NBC's coverage which I felt was pretty good , ABC's to see George Will's great commentary though both channels using different color schemes was puzzling.

What makes this election even better is Republicans have taken over the senate knocking down long time Dem incumbents who everyone thought was safe such as Herman Talmadge and took down so many liberal sentors such as McGovern, Bayh, Church, Culver , Javits and replacing them all with Conservative Republicans which will make Reagan's agenda much easier to enact and I cant wait for long time conservative goals on taxes, and regulations to finally go into affect.

I would say an A-, he has done many great things so far such as pass the major tax cut bill like he promised , has gone after the regulatory state in a fast way, is going on the offense against the Commies like promised. This year I hope Reagan is able to get spending cuts enacted into law though

Re: Why are Virginia and West Virginia Trending in opposite Directions
« on: November 9, 1988 at 3:56:17 pm »

Its pretty simple , Virginia is filled with greed racist hicks especially in the Suburban Counties who like the rest of the suburbs in the south have turned the Suburbs Titanium Republican because of the fact that they are voters who vote mainly on racial issues. West Virginia and Appalachia as a whole, on the other hand, are filled with people who dont care about dumb cultural issues and actually vote to their best interests and dont vote on racial dog whistles like people in  Virginia do.

Re: How will states like Georgia and Michigan be like 3 cycles from now
« on: October 5, 2007 at 2:32:27 pm »

Its pretty obvious except to people like Politican that Georgia is gonna be a Titanium R state at all levels 10 years from now and will likely vote for the Republicans by near 20 point margins while Michigan is gonna be a Safe D state at all levels 10 years from now , just look at the trends of both states since the early 1990s

Counties like Cobb and Gwinnett are only growing and they will make Georgia even more safely Republican while blue-collar suburbs in Michigan are only becoming more Democratic.

It is time to stop living in the past and start accepting that Trends Are Real

Although, I do think President Nixon’s law and order policies have been helpful in protecting suburbs, like where I live, from the thuggery of the inner cities, this is absolutely unacceptable. Nixon should be impeached. Our President is a crook.

White House Tapes implicate Nixon in Watergate Coverup
« on: August 6, 1974, 12:42:06 pm »

Come on guys! Sure, the recording shows he did it, but this wasn’t that bad, Nixon was just trying to cover it up because he felt bad. This isn’t impeachable, I hope he stays! #StandwithNixon

That pretty much nails what I think I would post in 1973 where I would first not believe the accusations against Nixon but by the time the tapes were released I would be in favor of impeaching him

Re: Black People Are Coming to the Cities
« on: July 18, 1969 at 07:50:15 am »

The Black People are coming to the cities, they are hoarding the cities and ruining them, and they are bringing crime! I'm moving to Morristown, New Jersey where we can live away from the blacks. We should ban drugs and guns for black people to stop the crime and we should have a war on drugs.

[signature: VOTE SUBURBAN FOR COUNCILOR]

What the h*ck is this! Let’s be very clear I don’t believe that African American people bring crime to suburbs and I’d welcome a diversification of suburbs, just look at how much better places like Orange County than flyover country in Appalachia. Also let’s be very clear a lot of the types of shootings that I’m worried about (such as school shootings) are not done by people of the African American race. Lastly, African Americans are not the primary users of drugs, the only reason they were targeted during the War on Drugs was because of the systemic racism present in predominantly white police departments. This is why we need mandatory racial bias training for all officers and those who fail the training must be terminated immediately without compensation. But sure go on about how I’m some closeted racist, when in fact, I’m a minority and like other minorities, I have not been a beneficiary of our “white-privilege” dominated society.

How is Orange County "much better" than Appalachia? It's one of the historically most right-wing and racist places outside of the South and is full of rich people. Let's dispel with this fiction of a dichotomy of "tolerant, socially liberal" suburbanites and "racist hicks." We should never forget that the good people of West Virginia broke away from their wealthy masters in Richmond to stay loyal to the Union.

West Virginia also trended Democratic from 1960-1988 while the entire south trended massively Republican

How can Ford appeal to Southern voters? Should he pick Wallace or Maddox for VP?
« Reply #10 on: August 13, 1974, 03:27:36 pm »

Wait you re suggesting Wallace or Maddox as VP . Lmao

If Ford wants Southern support, he needs to pick Reagan for VP and let him run for president in 1976. He was a co-runnerup in 1968 with Rockefeller , whom is too liberal for the party now. Days of the Dewey East Coast Establishment are over. Stagflation is proof liberals were wrong about economic policies. Reagan has reformed CA and created a national model to follow.

That seems exactly what I would say, and seems exactly like what my screenname would be.

The Supreme Court declares The National Industrial Recovery Act Unconstitional
« on: May 28, 1935 at 9:41:11 am »

Not fair at the slightest. Roosevelt passed something to benefit all Americans and all these "justices" care about is corporate interests, rather than the interest of the hardworking men across this country, many of whom struggle to put food on the table. It's pathetic, almost like these workers are slaves, which is unconstitutional. Congress needs to pass a new amendment to allow the NRA to become permanent. The Republicans have always been about big business and special interests, ever since they called themselves "Whigs". Jefferson was right. These Republicans love federal power, as long as it benefits banks and business, which is the only thing they stand for, seeing how they screwed over this country and left people to starve. As soon as the people elected a President for the people since most Americans can see through their deceptive corruption, these Republicans had the audacity to stop what could've been one of the greatest pieces of legislation ever passed in this Republic. Shame! We need a functioning government, not a government that only caters to the 1%.

Reaction to the 1896 Election Results
« on: November 4th, 1896 at 11:16:11 am »

I was so happy when the radio announced that Governor McKinley was elected President over Socialist William Jennings Bryan yesterday. Governor McKinley is someone who I know will help us recover from this terrible recession, and will help make our nation viewed at the same level with the British when it comes to world powers.

On a side Note,  the fact that McKinley got nearly 47% of the vote in a Southern State like mine shows that maybe I dont have to remain a Democrat to have any influence in the electoral process and I can one day register with the Republicans given other than Cleveland I would support them in all the elections since they became a party.

You know what I may switch my Avatar Blue when McKinley is inaugurated just to celebrate the occasion

Reaction to the 1896 Election Results
« on: November 4th 1896 at 12:31:19 pm »

It saddens me that in an election for the first time since Lincoln we had a a candidate that put the interests of people first and the nation rejected him. WJB was a true hero for the working class and I hope he is our nominee as next time after people see how badly an open elitist and imperialist President-Elect McKinley is , I am sure they will elect Bryan as our next President. While I am not gonna register as a Democrat currently , I will if they continue down the path Bryan created from them and I hope they do not return to Gold Democrat types just so they can try to get people like THG to vote for them when we all know he is a Republican at heart.

It is time we instead try to expand our coalition so we can bring in Industrial Workers from the Midwest who vote Republican and if it means losing states like VA/NC forever so be it. THG is someone who I view as a buddy on here but that does not mean he isnt a Republican at heart and we rather should try to get the voters of people like SN instead.

Lol of course he can’t , and any Democrat and Anti-Bush Republican who can accept that are in total denial . The fact is Bush will win a landslide in 2004 maybe even winning states like California and New Jersey and will for sure win OSR’s home state of Michigan. Anti Bush Republicans like him are massive RINO’s and it will be great to see him COPE when Bush wins in 2004 .

Bush is the greatest president we have have had in the modern era and 20 years from now he not Eisenhower nor Reagan will be known as the greatest Republican president in the past 100 years .

Also its spot on, as if you told anyone in 1987 that Trump became President, liberals would actually be more happier than conservatives because the assumption would be that that the Rockefeller Republicans retook control of the party .

- Being very Moralistic

- Fear nation is moving away from them on values

Yes, but their values were generally less agrarian and socially conservative. I put ER as a Southern Democrat because they liked strong moral values, and since ER is southern I figured he'd fit in better. All the WASPs in Massachusetts would laugh at his opinions.

ER is not an agrarian , he’s a suburban sunbelt social conservative that really didn’t exist in those days at all and I believe his family moved from the north to the south at some point . Like I highly doubt ER would be a southerner in the 1890s but even even McKinley got 46% in that state and WJB underperformed in much of the south .

Lastly Massachusetts if today isn’t anywhere near the same as the Massachusetts of the 1890s which was extremely socially conservative. Also no the WASP would not laugh at him at all cause they pretty much were the equalivent  of evangelicals today and not the WASPs of today . You need to really read the Yankee threads where he basically points out the fallacy of using todays perception of states to describe how they were ideologically back then .

Eh. I tried to fit everyone in in their states, even if I had to take some liberty. Not to mention, ER would have probably voted for WJB since he was famously very religious.

I’m sorry but this is not a good understanding of the 1896 election at all since WJB underperformed in the south especially in the more affluent parts of it . WJB was literally like the Bernie/AOC of that time while McKinley was basically the Youngkin of that time and I highly doubt ER would not vote for the Youngkin .

McKinley was no liberal on social issues at all

Virginia isn't really a southern state anymore. And Youngkin is not comparable to ER.

I was comparing Youngkin to McKinley not ER

Marilyn Manson should get the death penalty
« on: April 20th 1999 at 1:00:00pm »

He obviously caused the shooting that occured today. How could anyone disagree?
I think I'm missing some context here. Did OSR express a similar sentiment during some recent incident?
I was referencing OSR’s views on sex ed, “don’t say gay”,  “critical race theory”, etc.

You may disagree with my view on the Florida bill or CRT or sex Ed but I would never ever say something as outrageous as that .

Who do you plan to vote for/Who will win
« on: May 1 1992, 2:09:08 pm »

I plan to vote for Ross Perot for President and am enthusiastically in support for him. Finally we have a candidate who is serious about taking on the challenges we face such as our national debt, unfair trade deals and is honest about his solutions to them as yes there is no way we can balance the budget without spending being cut and our taxes being raised but I like his honesty here and thats what we need in a President.

I truly hope he wins but the electoral college system might ruin his chances as I don't think he can get to 270 even if he wins the popular vote and I dont think a Democratic Congress would choose him even in this case. Well I hope he brings up electoral reform as part of his platform to make it easier to third party candidates/independents in general to win.

As for Clinton and Bush , I don’t like them for different reasons . Bush is an honorable man but he is way to establishment and globalist to deal with the problems we face today and Clinton is an outsider but he is not an honorable man. If I had to choose who is the lesser of two evil it would be Clinton as we do need change given Republicans have controlled the White House for 20 of the last 24 years.

I plan to vote for President George Bush for a second term as he in my opinion as done a good job as President and makes us Texans proud to have someone like him as our President. I truly hope its not Bill Clinton as while he is a great speaker , he is just not a good guy.

On the other hand down ballot I hope Tom Delay loses as he is disgusting and Texas Democrats in general are pretty good as I voted for both Lloyd Bentsen in his Senatorial Run last time and have voted for Mark White and Ann Richards For Governor .

In general our nation has been well served by the Republican President/Democratic Congress of the past two decades and I hope that continues.

I can't vote since I am a citizen of Germany but I would support Bill Clinton. While I am grateful for President's Bush foreign policy accomplishments and generally have preferred Republicans over Democrats on foreign policy over the past decade, with the cold war over, I believe domestic issues are more important and in this area I solidly support the Democrats. The fact is after 12 years after pro Wall Street and Pro Businesses economic policies we need to bring government back in to at least reign in their power and also help people out in hard times.

It actually is a foreign policy issue as well, because when Reagan won in 1980 it caused pretty much the entire western world to move away from the post war economic consensus and adopt some version of Reaganism or Thatcherism . While Bill Clinton may not be very liberal I believe he would at least bring government back in some people's lives and can cause some sort of reversion of the past decade across the western world.

As for who will win, it is hard to say but I will say that I very doubt that Perot will get anywhere near 30% in the polls. Imo after the conventions and during the fall campaign he will drop off in a big way as voters realize the only two people who can be President are George Bush and Bill Clinton so I dont think he will win. As for who I think will win, I will say George Bush is probably favored as the GOP's advantages in the electoral college probably seem like they will persist for at least another 4 years.

I just do know how you can vote for anyone but George Bush. 12 years of Republican rule has led us to kick the buts of the Commies, Suddam and advance the cause of freedom like its never been done before. If people are frustrated with how things are going domestically than maybe its time we elect a Republican Congress who will pass George Bush's agenda rather than vote for someone who can't even be trusted to keep his own marriage vows and someone who just cannot win.

Anyway I think we will reelect President George Bush cause Americans will continue to want to roll and kick but.

Bush 1992 !

I plan to vote for Bill Clinton of course and I have had enough with everyone calling Bill Clinton a bad person over and over. First of all there is no evidence what so ever that he had an affair with Gennifer Flowers and second I don't see how thats a worse crime than Iran-Conta where there is a lot of evidence President Bush played a large part in.

Second all this negative coverage of him is once again nothing but an example of how biased the tv media has become in the past 12 years since Saint Ronnie became President and its a disgrace. They let Reagan and Bush get away with Iran-Contra , let them lie about their economic policies because at the end of the day they also love the same pro Wall Street and Pro Wealthy Policies in General.

So yes I am gonna vote for Bill Clinton and so will my home state of Kentucky. Will he win, I am not sure but he has a way better chance than any dem has in a long time. He unlike the rest of the Dems cannot be painted as weak on crime and pro tax and spend cause he is not and he is actually in touch with the common man unlike George Bush.

What I cannot wait to see though is the reaction of pretty much all the Blue Avatars when the Republicans lose given how much they have gloated on here for years and years on end of how they will never lose.

Probably I would have written something similar to that, though I may have predicted a Democratic victory since Clinton was a Southerner. In the primaries, would have backed Brown after initially hoping for a Mario Cuomo candidacy. Good job!

Hmm would you like Brown in 1992 as much though given he did run on a much more protectionist message in 92 as he was anti NAFTA then .

Anyway thanks

For the first time in my life, I will vote Republican
« on: July 11th 1896 at 1:00:00pm »

Democrats have always been the party of less government intervention in the economy, so I’ve always been a Democrat, but Bryan wants more intervention in the economy than McKinley, so I will vote for McKinley. If the Democrats keep going in a Bryanite direction, I’ll switch parties.

I could see OSR being a Mugwump but I can't see him being a Dem before at least 1876.

Yah more likely I would be a Republican for Cleveland but from 1856-1872 I would be solidly GOP , from 1876-1892 probably a swing voter since there wasnt that much difference between the parties then yah id go back to solid gop in 1896
