Can someone explain to me why this is a bad thing? Wouldn't regular voters (like old people) be the ones most likely to vote early in any case?

Early voters are always a good thing, because a banked vote is of course better than an ED vote which is more unreliable.

I think what he's saying though is that Dems have pulled more infrequent voters to be early voters, which I guess is half the point of trying to do it (bank your reliable voters but also bank some infrequent ones who may not go out on ED) while the GOP has really only banked their regular voters and now has to rely on more infrequent voters coming out on election day.

The entire point of early voting is to remove the excuse and risk of “forgetting to vote”. This is huge for people with severe ADHD like myself. The only year I voted on ED was 2022, when I was on paternity leave.

Right, which is why I think his point is that a main driver of early voting is to get the more infrequent voter, because they're more likely to then forget on election day or get caught up and not be able to. So I think what he's saying is that the GOP didn't focus on that, they just tried to get their voters out who were going to go on election day/vote for sure anyway.

Very disappointed that there aren’t a dozen posts here speculating on the effect that Northern Virginia’s weather will have on the election.

I understand that legislative elections are not statewide but doubtless the lack of rain in NOVA will turbocharge Democratic turnout from Roanoke to Norfolk via sheer word of mouth.

Minority turnout in VA is looking bad for Democrats. That said, it's a persuasion election.

Bad black turnout could sink Democrats in the VA Beach seats area though.

I remember VA beach black turnout was one of the first early voting warning signs in 2021.

How's that turnout crash in Blacksburg and Williamsburg?

Watch out for low turnout in Charlottesville, Blacksburg and Williamsburg. This’ll only cost Democrats about 1 state house seat and 1 state senate seat though.

Obenshain (R) is the winner in HD-41, the state house district that includes part of Blacksburg.

Diggs (R) leads by 51 votes with all precincts reported in SD-24, the state senate district that includes part of Williamsburg. Recount likely. William & Mary provisionals may decide this outcome.

Bump.

So the surprise was actually the near tie in SD-30, which voted clearly right of SD-31 and SD-16!

FWIW, SD-27 probably will end up left of SD-24 when Poquoson is said and done.

This together with the Ohio abortion referendum results are the first good news Democrats have had in a long time. It makes me a little more hopeful that once 2024 really kicks into gear and people start paying attention, Biden might regain his advantage over Trump. The polls for the past few months have been extremely concerning though.

Was Monica Gary a GOP plant? She got 5% of the vote and Durant is winning with 48-46 over Griffin.

So if I understand well, results in competitive seats are between 2020 et 2021. Not bad for GOP, considering that VA is a blue state and that the 2023 special elections favored dems.

BREAKING: woman who has sex with her *checks notes* own husband gets unfairly “slut” shamed with revenge porn by her demonic opponents to humiliate her and suffers an election defeat.
Also her opponents: Oh, the orange skid mark cheated on his wife with a porn star? No biggie.

FWIW Susanna Gibson overperformed the fundamentals.  That was the best Dem result in the state in a Biden +5 seat.

In fact the night was not so good for the dems: if biden does the same result, he loses the election.
