From a political standpoint, I'd wait until after the midterm elections to pass statewide bans beyond super safe R states so that the abortion issue won't be front and center in the fall. The SCOTUS decision in June will cause some backlash and mass protests, but I expected this to fade within weeks as we live in a 24-hour newscycle and inflation remains a big issue.

There's a reason Christianity is dying among young people in this country. And it has to do with Christians themselves. Idc if you belong to "mainline" church. The face of Christianity in this country is evangelicalism. An ideology using religion as a tool to fight back against any social progress made since the 1950s (plus gutting public education). Luckily for them they have crazy right-wing Catholics to use as an ally.

The only positive with these decisions is that more young people will shun religion as its only use nowadays is a being a tool for the right.

It's sad because there are lots of young people that want to go to church, mass, explore their faith and spiritual beliefs, but it became so politicized.  It really became almost a part of one party (the Republicans), and I do agree with many evangelicals that say it's become too focused on these issues where it really cannot change the whole of society.  There's issues that have been so neglected - poverty, especially in children, hunger and food insecurity, homelessness, not being able to afford a family, not being able to keep families together - but they have been so narrow-minded.  Even at Liberty University there's students who are really starting to question this undying loyalty to one man (Trump) and how that really does not match the ideals they have.

Catholic Social Teaching :

The defense of human life, from conception to natural death. Poverty, Homelessness, immigration, are all part of the pro life frame work.

Many Catholics don't believe this themselves, although it's stated clearly in the teachings of the church damn it !

And neither you nor any of the other little zealots who liked this post will raise a pinky finger to take care of the millions of unwanted pregnancies that result from this decision. Per usual, you'll be Christians with overwhelming piety when it comes to Taliban style laws removing individual liberties, but you'll remain good Republicans before Christians when it comes to issues like having a government actively involved in charity.

Hypocrites.

How likely is this to become a real ruling? This draft looks more like a political document, not a court opinion.

Opponents of Roe v. Wade have been trying to overturn that ruling for 49 years. The Democrats can't just say this draft is a complete surprise now. They had chances to codify Roe v. Wade, and opted not to do it.

Oh b*******. Even the age of a supermajority there weren't enough votes codify Roe. And furthermore it could have been would have been swept away with the next Republican trifecta.

Aim your outrage where it belongs.

Quite bluntly: most SCOTUS opinions on contentious issues are political documents first, court opinions second.

Can confirm. The Republican Party has been the single most destructive entity to Christianity in America in the past few years. The church is increasingly refusing to actually change their rhetoric (not their stance which is theological obv) to fit the population. If it makes you feel a bit better, I am noticing a slow rise in liberal Christianity among the very young, although it’s slow. Hopefully we can get a trend like this to accelerate, a Christianity which preaches community and loving thy neighbor is the best thing America could hope for.

I’ve noticed the same thing to an extent. Might be slow change but real nonetheless. And honestly the best chance at long-term survival the Church may have would be a resurgence of liberal Christianity, given the rapid rise in irreligiosity among the youth.

At some point we need to start ignoring the courts.

Honestly, we might be closer to that point than we think.

Well, this is exactly what overturning Roe achieves in effect since it sends the issue back to State Legislatures.

I do make online content for some of the younger generation (Alpha ig) so I engage with them a lot.
If it makes any of y’all feel better, this trend has honestly magnified recently even beyond Gen Z. I see the same commenters with BLM in their profile write about how Jesus loves you. Like it’s an actual correlation at this point. It could be a biased sample, but still it’s very encouraging.

Ew don’t compare Joe Biden to a disgusting 19th century Democrat. Andrew Jackson was one of the worst presidents in the timeline. That’s worse than comparing him to *ge.

The sickening little hint at next going after Lawrence and Obergefell that Alito dropped in his opinion proves that doing away with the right to abortion will have awful reactionary and authoritarian implications far beyond just the issue of abortion. It is simply not possible for a society which imposes draconian restrictions on abortion rights to be free, open, and egalitarian.

Based.

I'm sure the GOP's next coup is challenging pro-choice laws through federal courts.

You know I wonder if there would be more interference ala Austria style regulation if we had a universal public healthcare system to begin with.

This debate over rights and autonomy assumes that everything in healthcare is a private matter.

In many other countries, since Healthcare is a right, it gives the government the right to regulate all healthcare services, including abortion.
