Bill has passed and now sent to be signed by Walz.

Currently felons out on parole or in probation can not vote u til that is complete. Under the new law they'll be able to vote as soon as their prison sentence is complete.

I doubt this is helpful for Democrats, but I support it anyway because having everyone's voice heard is the most important feature of a democratic nation.

This is a good start. I think we should also have a serious debate about whether those currently incarcerated should be able to vote — I lean yes.

This is what should happen in a democracy.

This will make 4.5% of blacks and 7% of Native Americans now eligible.

What raw numbers of each? I checked before posting and saw there are more whites than blacks on prison in Minnesota, and that whites are less likely to go to prison for equal crimes (suggesting that there are probably a higher number of white felons not in prison), and I suspect the white felons will have higher turnout once they are eligible.

It may be a wash though, with turnout being low and not that many people affected. Also some whites will vote D.

Do you want prison guards to have 100's of votes they can effectively sell for much, much more than their salary?  Because that is what would happen in many prisons.  The problem is the states that don't automatically give back voting rights after the sentence is over.

This is a bad faith argument because it means seniors in homes shouldn’t vote either.

Most states prevent people who are cognitively impaired to the point of being under a guardianship from voting for similar reasons.

Do you have any evidence to back up that claim, or is it pure speculation?

Which is not the majority of people living in retirement homes.

Purely speculating but I would assume that ex-felons would be among the lowest-turnout demographics you can imagine.

The only felons who should be barred from voting are those convicted of electoral fraud or similar offenses.
