Tory Momentum with knobs on, good luck with that eh.

While this did get some coverage it always frustrates me how a Labour councillor getting de-selected made headline news, but the Conservative party fringe turning into this gets barely any coverage.

It's v funny as well because at least in Labour it's easy to work out where to fight as a faction; control of CLPs, the regions, regional conferences, selections etc.

The only hope this group has is that the party membership is so low you can essentially run riot with a strong email list

Low hanging fruit. But "Home Secretary demands someone do something about immigration" remains a wild headline.

Does she want to be fired in order to be the darling of the Tory far right?

Does she want to be fired in order to be the darling of the Tory far right?

She definitely seems to be auditioning for the top job right now. The speech that's being trailed in this article was the one she gave this afternoon at the "National Conservatism" conference. It went way outside of her government brief, and was full of really weird stuff designed to enamour her to hard-right of the membership and base.

It included such zingers as this bizarre swing at Starmer: “Given his definition of a woman we can’t rule him out from running as Labour first woman prime minister.”

As well as several attempts to lay out her ideology in full. “I understand the goal of conservatism is to protect fundamental rights…the left sees the purpose of politics to eradicate the existence of inequality even if this is at the expense of individual liberty and flourishing.”

Seems like she wants to be Leader of the Opposition, really badly. Ironically, I think Ed Davey and Suella Braverman both dream of her being the next leader of the Conservatives, given what she could do to their chances in seats like those of Michael Gove and Jeremy Hunt.

The 1990s called, they want their internally dysfunctional Tory party back.

The 90s was plain sailing in comparison to the current situation.

Would be ironic if the Tories' next election is not as bad as 1997's, then.

It’s only day 2 of the National Conservative conference, because apparently the Bring Back Boris conference was a completely different event despite its great similarities.

This National Conservative one is much creepier. If this is the future of the Conservative Party then god help us.

Arguably more so, God help them. This is not election winning stuff, and then some - at least the original form of Corbynism did have quite a bit of stuff that was (in itself, at any rate) popular.

And its good for more to be introduced to what a repellent individual Douglas Murray actually is.

Genuinely, one of the most dangerous people alive.

It's all very SERIOUS stuff this.

Everything is woke. People need to have babies etc.

And everyone you'd expect to be at a conference as niche as this, is there.

This is a soft launch for the next pet project of the international right wing. We're going to get this drip by drip.

d Andrea Jenkyns (who opened the conference by operatically singing the national anthem - including the more... aggressive verses).

the one with "Rebellious Scots to crush!" or something else?

This'll scare you: some of us on the right actually believe in and agree with most of the things said at these conferences.

Of course. Doesn't mean they should even be running a parish council.

Minimising the Holocaust? Believing 2/3rds of teachers are promoting political values just because they teach about critical race theory...critically?

Just accept you are an authoritarian at least. You want to impose your views on us, at the end of a barrel of a gun. Like Chairman Mao.

As Truss found out, you can't stake out a 'populism' that isn't popular. If the Tories want to 'wokerati' themselves down the drain, let them. If the Cadbury Bunny comes back and isn't 'sexy enough' I'm sure they'll have a fart sniffing blast.

'Anti-wokery' doesn't feed you.
'Being proud of the past' doesn't pay the rent.

Yes. I accept that, at heart, I am fundamentally an authoritarian. I would like to remake society in my own image, but alas - the nation is not ready for my theocracy just yet.

Don't let the yellow avatar fool you - my feelings about fascism are mixed at best.

I wonder whether Miriam Cates MP and the others there so concerned about the birthrate are aware of precisely which government introduced various caps on child benefit a number of years ago?

If everyone just picked fruit there wouldn't need to be any child benefits obviously.

Scottish Secretary Alister Jack confirms he'll be standing down at the next election (but seemingly declines the peerage offered by Johnson, so he can stay in parliament and cabinet until the 2024 election). Very marginal seat - Tory majority of 1.3k over the SNP in 2019. Will be an interesting one - was Labour 2005-2015, but has otherwise been an SNP-Tory marginal, which is very much the state of politics in the Borders right now.

The context here is the news (as reported in the Times) that the sitting MPs offered peerages will likely have to stand down in order to be elevated. So we could still see by-elections in the seats of Alok Sharma, Nigel Adams and Nadine Dorries.

Labour's wins in 2005 and 2010 were largely down to the very strong personal appeal of Russell Brown (the MP for Dumfries 1997-2005 and previously a well-known local government figure), who still managed a quarter of the vote when Götterdämmerung struck, which is about what Labour would usually have polled in the constituency (had it existed) prior to 1997.

Thankfully she stopped before she got that far!

But she did include all the ones asking God to crush your enemies, before the conference became 48 hours attacking their own party, which had some… interesting implications.
