Four to the resignation, less than five until she actually goes.

Sam Allardyce in as caretaker to avoid relegation?

He's a Labour man which would make that problematic. Maybe Lampard could be persuaded to leave Everton?

For all the Italy comparisons, note that Truss’ tenure was considerably shorter than that of the average Italian PM.

Actually, for the entire history of the Italian public, only one PM lasted less than 100 days in office: Amintore Fanfani, during his very first tenure in 1954. He lasted only 22 days in office, so he still beats Truss, but that was very much the exception rather than the rule.

Truss' tenure is more in line with the Fourth French Republic, which was far more unstable than Italy ever was. Even then, it had 21 PMs in 12 years, so an average tenure of about 7 months.

Truss also had a shorter tenure than any of the Chancellors of the Weimar Republic, barely getting beaten by Kurt von Schleicher (1932-33) at 56 days.

Her term as PM was a bit longer though than the ones of Max von Baden, the final Chancellor of the German Empire (1918), as well as Joseph Goebbels and Lutz Graf Schwerin von Krosigk, the final two Chancellors of the Third Reich (1945).

So, as some of the regulars here know I had a major operation at the beginning of August. All being well, I will come off the post-op steroids in a few weeks. Truss's Premiership occurred entirely within this period lmao.

Not sure how much longer she will stay on as "caretaker" but we've had governments which never received the confidence of Parliament in the first place that lasted significantly longer than she is likely to. Anyway, good riddance!

Small units of time in politics used to be measured in the tenure of Scottish Labour leaders. The current leader has outlasted two PM's.

Amintore Fanfani's last government in 1987 (do not research).

It's also worth pointing out that Truss managed to beat William Henry Harrison!

What is the shortest legitimate parliamentary turnover in history? I don’t mean like a death or coup but a scenario like this

I still can’t get over it. This is textbook “free vote” stuff, right? A motion that ended up with a 100-vote margin, with specific defections already expected for constituency and manifesto-based reasons — why burn so much political capital on THIS, of all things?

The real reason is that fracking is both a sacred cause to the Tufton Street gang who own Truss, and also a magnet to the brain dead Braverman types because they literally only exist to "own the libs".

But together, these two groups aren't close to a majority of even the current Tory parliamentary party.

By my reckoning, Truss lasted around 0.1 Dugdales.

For a while, Johnson did a remarkably good job in convincing lots of people that his was a genuinely "new" government - "previous near-decade of Tory rule is nothing to do with us, guv"

But the spell has truly worn off now, and what it reveals is not pretty.

Oh I know it very narrowly beat that threshold... I was referring to just about everything else about that government's existence (so much for crazy confidence votes).

Apparently just a few days ago Truss pleaded with some of her own MPs that she should at least be allowed to remain PM until early 2023, which would have meant her just outdoing Canning.

At the time many may have been inclined to agree, if only out of sympathy.

But then she wantonly, and totally of her own free will, blew everything up yesterday.
