Reading Liz Truss's Wikipedia page (or I guess that of her husband to be precise) on this most important day for her I found out that one of her two daughters is named Liberty... lol.

There's definitely going to be a spike today in people learning for the first time that when George V was on his deathbed, his doctor gave him a lethal overdose of morphine and cocaine in order to ensure his death would occur in time to make it into the morning newspapers.

"Liz was a great supine protoplasmic invertebrate jelly whose righteousness glistened like a wet otter. The Tories' great victories in the past four elections made her breasts bigger and extended her lifespan by at least six years. Our rivers are full of jellied eels. You cannot have freedom without kleptocracy. Read Seventy-two Virgins."

'The latest census figures show that for the first time there are more people from a Catholic background in Northern Ireland than Protestant.

The proportion of the resident population which is either Catholic or brought up Catholic is 45.7% compared to 43.48% Protestant.'

If there's a mood in the Tory Party after a defeat at the next election that's akin to that in 2001 (or indeed in Labour in 2015) then he could become leader. If he does keep his seat.

Broke: JRM for Tory leader
Woke: Georg EBNER for Tory leader

They’ve got a skeleton to build on with the mayoral system, but a more federal approach, with parliaments in Yorkshire, Cornwall etc would be far better, and in line with the second chamber suggested in the report.

I'm increasingly missing Boris Johnson, this mini-budget just shows how much worse Truss' policies are. We're counting on Labour to put this government out of its misery in 2024.

As I said on another forum, it's bizarro-socialism that cares not a jot about inflation or borrowing or the defecit but shovels free money into the pockets of it's wealthy client base.

Labour will have to cut spending and raise taxes or start seizing wealth. Which frankly it's long overdue.

The Tory march into the sea of "single-issue pensioners' FYIGM party" continues unabated!

Liz Truss has apparently been taking economics classes at the Nicolas Maduro school of magical thinking. Very good.

Reject modernity (Istanbul School), embrace tradition (post-neoclassical endogenous growth theory)

Boris Johnson returns as leader within a year as the voice of rationality and moderation. Calling it now.

Of all the articles that have been written on UK politics this year, Matthew Lynn’s Spectator piece last month might age the worst. The first paragraph:

Quote
Who is Sunak kidding with his warnings about sterling?
There will be a run on sterling. The gilts market will be in freefall. And the FTSE will tumble as global investors take fright and sell off every form of British asset. It might take only a few days, or the government might stagger through until the end of September, but before long Liz Truss and her new Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng will have been forced to call in the IMF to stabilise a collapsing economy. That is, at least, according to the former Chancellor Rishi Sunak. With just a few desperate days left in his doomer leadership campaign, he has declared his opponent's tax and spending plans so wild and reckless they risk a full-blown sterling crisis of the sort we have not seen since the 1970s.
https://amp.spectator.co.uk/article/rishi-sunak-s-petulant-attempt-to-start-a-run-on-the-pound/amp

Sure, we aren’t about to call in the IMF - but man, the schadenfreude.

Yes.

He tweeted this

Which makes me fear this will now happen.

Do we need to bring Idi Amin back from the dead so he can organize another Save Britain Fund?

The Telegraph is such a frustrating paper - competent at investigative journalism, and basically c**p at most other stuff.

It's a shame: it used to be a paper with a firm and very right-wing editorial line but with high quality journalism across the board (including very good sports coverage) so perfectly readable even if you strongly disagreed with its politics, but, well, long ago and far away now. It's an extreme example, but the general pattern holds across our newspapers.

That was always the classic excuse for anyone a bit embarrassed by what other people might think of their political leanings when they saw them reading it: “I only buy it for the cricket!”

So, if Truss is the Kim Campbell in this hilarious scenario, who would the Jean Charest and Elsie Wayne be?

Charest: David Duguid
Wayne: Lia Nici

(As long as this analogy doesn't mean we get SNP Official Opposition, Christ)

What are chances Boris Johnson returns as PM?  I am pretty sure if Boris Johnson was PM, party wouldn't be doing as badly.  Trailing sure, but not by 30 points.

I'd say about -10%, maybe less. I'm by no means any sort of authority on British politics, but I would think Sunak is probably the most likely leader if Truss gets the boot.

Yes, it's too soon for Boris, though you are a fool if you think he isn't rebuilding his machine for round 2. His ideal "restoration" would be after a Tory electoral loss, where he can play towards electoral hindsight. Its not hard now to imagine Tories see 2019 in rose colored glasses, and also seeing Boris's issues as forgivable when matched against recency bias, but he lacks the ability to prove all doubters as fools and the ability to overhaul the party to prevent future disloyalties - both things that would be available in the aftermath of any type of Labour victory.
Issue with a Boris restoration after a defeat is he'd lose his seat in almost any election resulting in a Labour government, nevermind the sort of cataclysm the Tories face now. Of course, I suppose he could move to a safer seat, but I'm not sure how likely that is.

Boris Johnson (Con–Tiverton and Honiton) just imo

Hilariously, his previous seat prior to becoming Mayor of London is projected to stay blue even in that wonderful LABOR NUT map back on page 24.

It's a Remain-voting seat where the LibDem vote surged by 16% in 2019, it would be a reach seat (Con+24%) but don't be too surprised if it flips. David Cameron's old seat is similar actually.

Or, you know, the Lib Dems could flip them...
