Also seems to have ruled out an early election...

A very beep boop, twirling towards freedom opening pitch from Truss.

Before we move on to Truss I just want to say at the end of the Boris Johnson era, what an anticlimax that was. I honestly thought Johnson would end up being a fairly significant PM, especially after the 2019 election, but not really.

As for Truss, victory speech today was a bit awkward. (Love the thread title btw)

I have to say that this has been the most underwhelming transfer of PMs that I've lived through. If I didn't happen to have the telly on at lunchtime, the result might have completely passed me by. In a way, it's quite surreal - I sense literally no buzz from anybody that we're getting a new PM tomorrow, not even from amongst the people who were listening to her victory speech.

Unlike a lot of others, I am willing to give Truss a chance. But there's no denying that she appears a strange woman totally out of her depth, whose odd mannerisms seem to perversely amplify the sense of dread that the country is living under at the moment.

Britain - the first country to voluntarily renounce it's status as a developed nation?

Only if Argentina was involuntary.

Fair point, I largely avoided the leadership contest, didn't watch any hustings (why would I subject myself to that) and so watching her victory speech my main take away was "hey, she's not very good at this"

Congratulations to the UK on your new Prime Minister?

And yes, the thread title is great. There were other good ones proposed but I think this sets the theme for Truss' premiership quite well.

Didn't the US do that in 1980?

Speaking of major Truss issues, the public already doesn't trust her to properly handle any of the major issues-

These things can be hard to judge. Maybe his exceptionally strong support for Ukraine will be seen as pivotal in the historiographies of 2050 or 2100 or 2500.

Johnson left #10 like three hours ago.

Truss isn't there yet because she's still finishing a speech to her staff.

A much closer result than many expected, myself included.

A Foreign Secretary with underwhelming charisma ascending to the head of a beleagured 12-year-old Conservative government whose mismanagement saw Britain's global influence severely curtailed. All getting a bit Douglas-Home over here.

Truss isn't there yet because she's still finishing a speech to her staff.

He still has to go and confirm his resignation with the Queen, and then she confirms Truss as PM.

This was previously done in Buckingham Palace just a stone's throw from Westminster - though one curious artefact is that we still have had a period of 30 minutes or so with no "official" PM - but now it is in her long term residence of Balmoral in the Scottish highlands (due to Brenda's "mobility" issues) so that is going to drag things out a bit.
