Coffey left because she looks too much like a pig and Cameron's appointment made her uncomfortable.

That was in 2009, and not unheard of in Israel. Netanyahu was Sharon's chancellor, Rabin was Peres' minister of defence, and then Peres was his foreign secretary.

Yes, in a small country - especially one with a fragmented political landscape - this sort of thing will not be so rare as it's often just a matter of practicalities. Whereas in a large country...
Aso Taro was deputy PM and Minister of Finance during Abe's second premiership. He remains a powerful LDP faction leader and power broker today.

Very funny that braverman is probably in a fit right now because the headlines will be about DCam rather than her. (That's probably half the reason Rishi did it)

*sigh*
Why fire McLean if you didn’t have a solid replacement lined up? It’s embarking enough her being the 16th housing minister in 13 years. To seemingly leave the office without a willing minister, just looks like malpractice.

It would be terrible, truly dreadful, if it were an important post.

Sunak is doing this to defend the base seats of the Conservatives, I presume?

Sounds like Victoria Atkins might be getting the job (although she's be tipped for cabinet in the past three reshuffles, so pinch of salt).

Funny thing is - much of the briefing about demoting Barclay was that he was being outmatched by Streeting in the Commons. Odd then, to put Atkins, a first time cabinet minister, in post instead.

Moan about Brexit - which is sort of a deal-breaker.

Liberals and SW1 people in the media and wider Conservative sphere seem to be loving Cameron’s appointment, which is a sure fire sign that it will go down like a bucket of cold sick with the Conservative grassroots and the wider public.

It’s just so unnecessary. Sunak should’ve kept Cleverly at the Foreign Office, put Gove in at HO and then promoted one of the DLUHC junior ministers internally to SoS. Big reshuffles aimed at ‘resetting’ the government’s image literally never work and always cause more problems than they solve.

Holden engineered much of the noise around "beergate" last year, for better or worse. Given it let Starmer get on a soap-box and talk about his own integrity amidst the worst of partygate, I'd be inclined to lean towards the latter.

Odd that, given the rest of the cabinet leans *very* blue wall, they'd put party strategy in the hands of a red-waller. Every other appointment screams "shore up the home counties", while Holden is very 2019.

Dept. of Health is a hell of a job to be your first cabinet role - especially on the cusp of winter.

It seems not that uncommon in parliamentary govts that former PMs take over a cabinet role after leaving the top job. Still feels kind of odd.

Holden won't be in a Red Wall seat as soon as he can find a safe berth for next time - though as things stand, his seat-hunting has been only marginally more successful than Seb Payne's.

What, you mean you don't want new ministers introduced like Smash Bros characters?

^That's the official announcement of our new Culture Secretary, btw.

One thing I’ll say - now that they’ve done this, I desperately hope he makes it through the next year. He presided over the start of the s**tshow, he deserves to be there for the spectacular end.

What I like about this board is that despite us all having various views on the issues we broadly have the same sense of analysis- the excitement about Cameron among a certain set of people has been quite weird!

It has been very subtle but obvious how much the Cameron set has begun to rerun the party- Dowden as deputy PM who was a Cameron staffer, Hague acting as an outrider on issues, some favourite sons now running for selection

I had him pencilled in to get no.2 at FCDO- being trade minister again is a a huge demotion especially when it doesn’t even have a department. You’re essentially just a trade envoy at BEIS going ‘buy British’.
