Braverman at Justice when she committed a felony resulting in her sacking...my god...

I in no way wish to defend Braverman, and of course she is a vile woman who should be nowhere near the cabinet for a multiplicity of reasons, but this is not accurate. She was sacked for an incredibly minor breach (accidentally sending a non-sensitive email from her personal rather than work account) that ordinarily would not be an issue at all, but it was clear that whoever was pulling the strings at that point (presumably Hunt) wanted her gone even if on the flimsiest of pretexts.

To pivot momentarily to Scotland - Sunak has six MPs to choose from for Scotland Secretary.
  • Alister Jack and David Duguid are Johnson loyalists (the only ones to vote for Johnson in his confidence vote, and serve under both Johnson and Truss), so are less likely to stick around if Sunak wants to reward loyalists. Both seem to be good footsoldiers though - so may be safe.
  • Douglas Ross is leader of the Scottish Conservatives, and a sitting MSP as well - so it won’t be him.
  • David Mundell held the office under Cameron, and could come back.
  • John Lamont is close to Penny Mordaunt, resigning as Truss’ PPS during the Pincher scandal, and nominating Mordaunt in both contests.
  • Finally, you have Andrew Bowie, former PPS to Theresa May, and Sunak ally - amongst the first 10 MPs to endorse Sunak in both contests. He’s sitting on the slimmest majority of any Scottish Conservative, but may, regardless, be in line to be rewarded for his loyalty. He’s not afraid to represent the party on Politics Live, even if it’s done him no favours - so he could be relied on to deliver the cabinet line if necessary.

DEFRA Sec Ranil Jayawardena is out.

Simon Clarke, Housing/Levelling Up Sec also out - was among the first to back Johnson last week.

If Sunak is largely going with loyalists, like Johnson and Truss did, he is going to create a huge problem for himself.

Buckland - who endorsed Sunak in the first leadership contest only to switch to Truss when it became clear that she was going to win - has, to the surprise of absolutely no one, also been sacked.

Sunak’s left Westminster - headed back to Downing Street. So firings seem to be done for now - onto the hirings.

Worth noting that Zahawi and Cleverly haven’t been outright fired - so may carry on or be given new jobs. Also suggests Heaton-Harris and Jack (NI and Scotland, respectively) are favoured to carry on.

There's always the possibility she made the mistake on purpose to have something to resign from the sinking ship over

Smoking a joint is a minor joint but Braverman would probably have me castrated for a puff.

Surprised that Coffey hasn't been ditched? She seemed like a certain one to be punted out a window.

Sharma removed from cabinet.

Alok Sharma stays COP 26 President - but the role is divorced from ministerial responsibility, so he’ll no longer attend cabinet. Sharma endorsed Johnson at the eleventh hour last week - so that may be why he’s been demoted while staying in office.

Maybe they’re sending her to Northern Ireland? I hate that brief being used as a punishment, it’s frankly insulting, but that’s definitely how Johnson used it. Really struggling to see her being kept at Health.

Yeah, that would be a punishment... for Northern Ireland.

Assuming a number of the surviving Truss ministers will be demoted to “also attending cabinet” roles… if they accept them, that is.

Not impossible Sunak is calculating along the lines of "I have to give her a job after she endorsed me, but soon she will mess up and we will finally be rid"......

Tbf, when converting a Cabinet of Truss loyalists to a Cabinet that you purport is gonna be more representative of the entire parliamentary party's "talents," you're presumably gonna have to cull some Truss loyalists along the way.

That's about half the cabinet out. I suspect the replacements will be mostly familiar faces rather than new blood, for risk aversion.

Dominic Raab just pitched up in Downing Street - broadly tipped to be headed to either the Home Office or Dept. of Justice.

Rigby speculating on Sky that walking in first means it's one of the Big 3, with Chancellor least likely for obvious reasons but weirdly still non-0.

Irritating that thanks to Truss we’re stuck with a Chancellor whose grasp of detail is at best… shaky.
