If Truss (and Hunt) are still in office during winter I don't know how the NHS will cope.

Tbh rooting for Sunak purely because it would be pretty cool to have someone of Indian descent becoming pm of the uk. Otherwise I can’t speak for him whatsoever lol.

Like a schoolgirl sitting sullenly in the hallway while Mummy defends her from mean nasty Headmaster Starmer. No comment.

If Truss (and Hunt) are still in office during winter I don't know how the NHS will cope.

I would genuinely not be surprised if the Spencer Perceval Solution has been floated in passing between exasperated doctors or nurses by now.

He presumably, hopefully would also be more competent.

Did Conservatopia change his signature?

I'm glad at least the comments under the Telegraph articles remain pro-Trussonomics.
I hope someone has a screenshot, because I'm never gonna let him forget it.  Cheesy

Compare to YouGov’s figures for Prince Andrew:
Approval: 11%
Disapproval: 75%

At this point, even if I did approve of Truss, I'd still say disapprove just to see how low the poll numbers can go. Tongue

Boris's parties seem so quaint now, don't they?

With retrospect, Johnson was maybe the only person capable of holding the Tories together - in 2019 it is quite possible part of his appeal was seeming to offer an end to the seemingly interminable Tory psychodrama, as well as the more obvious thing of "get Brexit done".

However, as many suspected his personal shortcomings doomed that as a long term project.

And we are where we are.

From the Guardian:
Quote
Ben Wallace has hastily cancelled an early afternoon appearance before the Commons defence committee for an urgent trip to Washington DC, prompting speculation as to the purpose of the sudden visit.

James Heappey, a deputy defence minister, said “my boss Ben Wallace is in Washington this morning” in an interview in Sky News and offered a cryptic explanation of his presence there.

The junior minister told Sky News that Wallace was going “to have the sort of conversations that … beyond belief really, the fact we are at a time when these sort of conversations are necessary”.

Immediately prior, Heappey had said that the MoD was doing “a good job keeping our nation safe at a time of incredible global insecurity” although it was unclear what he may been referring to.

Doesn't feel particularly reassuring.

Sunak's position in the Tory Party is similar to that of Michael Portillo about twenty years ago. Both smooth media performers, both basically well to the right, both have strong bases of support but probably even more enemies. The latter point cost Portillo ever getting the leadership and may well cost Sunak ever getting it too.

It’s starting to age, but it’s been given some Lucozade which should give it a new boost of energy.

Both smooth media performers, both basically well to the right, both have strong bases of support but probably even more enemies. The latter point cost Portillo ever getting the leadership and may well cost Sunak ever getting it too.
IDS beat Portillo by one vote to get onto the membership ballot in 2001. Given that the other option was Ken Clarke, who the membership distrusted over his fondness for Europe, that one vote likely decided who became Leader of the Opposition.

I occasionally wonder what it is that lost Portillo that ballot. Would he have won if he hadn't been frank about his bisexuality the year before? The party was in a very different place on LGBT issues back then. Or did his gradual drift towards the centre just leave him without a clear constituency...

Yeah. this raises some serious questions.

There's a chance he's getting a dressing down over this story:

My guess is that it's far more likely that the US are worried about some tech (from the F35 or similar) leaking to the PRC (and Wallace has gone to apologise, make amends, and promise a full-throated investigation), than a crisis meeting over nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

It's no secret that UK-US relations have been a little strained due to the Tory-Biden drama, and Wallace is savvy enough to know that being in Washington is good for the bilateral relationship, and good for him personally to avoid the party infighting back home.

Okay, that might be it.

But with the situation in the Ukraine going from bad to worse on a daily basis now, who knows what is going on behind the scenes.

YouGov polling of Tory members for the Times finds 55% want Truss to resign. Other headline results from the poll:
  • Sunak would beat Truss 55%-25% in a rerun of the ballot.
  • Johnson (somehow) leads the list of preferred replacement PMs with 32%, ahead of Rishi Sunak with 22%, Wallace on 10%, Mordaunt on 9% and Badenoch on 8%.
  • 60% of members want a unity candidate to emerge.
  • 50% of members think the membership should be excluded from the next leadership election.
