Who wins the Stony Brook @ UMass game?

Big win for the Illini last weekend. Yes Virginia is terrible. Yes, they had a number of mistakes. But Illinois teams under previous regimes would have found ways to lose that game. Instead, the defense absolutely stifled the opponent and we comfortably won, defending the home turf and getting revenge against a Power 5 opponent. My optimism for a bowl game is back on (uh oh...) considering the general weakness in the Big Ten West. There must be three wins among Nebraska, Northwestern, Purdue, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. We have back-to-back mini-bye weeks split with a Thursday night game against Chattanooga, and its looking like the students are coming out for that game. This time to prep should help us clean things up before the conference schedule starts. We can do this!

Who wins the Stony Brook @ UMass game?

This is actually an interesting and valid question because SP+ has Stony Brook favored by 6, but I don't believe it. I would believe any other Colonial team sans Hampton, Towson, and perhaps Maine could beat UMass. But Stony Brook seems to be in a downward rut while their peers are getting better.

If they want to make the playoffs, this would be their "7th win" that gets them in. But I don't believe they will get close to that. The Seawolves will start the year 0-6 with heartbreakers here and at Fordham before picking up their first win on October 22nd while hosting a bruised and bus-lagged Maine squad. Perhaps that will initiate a monumental change in fortunes for the back half of the schedule if they stay healthy, but it will be too little too late.

Take the Minutemen to get their lone (?) win of the year (they won't beat UConn though NMSU will be a delight).

I feel much better about SP+ as an analytic tool after week 4 or 5 than right now. The preseason projections are included until after week 7 and can have weirdly distorted expectations in the early weeks for schools doing better or worse than the recruiting and previous season stats suggested.

I can't think of a reason why Nebraska would pursue a head coach with the ethical problems Urban Meyer has in his past, when they have better options (half the Big Twelve, Jamey Chadwell, possibly Mark Stoops) available (and that's getting into the very remote possibility that someone like a Luke Fickell would come to Lincoln).

Meyer's best shot at rebuilding his career is either a Group of Five Program that needs to take a flyer, or a Power Five program that doesn't care, either because of incoming sanctions (Arizona State), or past history with coaches in similar situations (possibly Penn State if James Franklin is fired or leaves for another job soon).
