It's just about that time again!  College football (with your defending champion Georgia Bulldogs) starts up again on August 27.  Terry the Fat Shark and I will be running a weekly pick'em game with the same rules as last year; these will be posted before the first game.

Are we starting on August 27, September 2, or September 3?

If it's any of the dates before September 3, there are some interesting games to pick from, such as Nebraska/Northwestern, West Virginia/Pittsburgh, Penn State/Purdue and Illinois/Indiana and TCU/Colorado.

Georgia Head Coach Kirby Smart signs a ten year extension that will make him the highest paid coach at a public university.

Quote
On the heels of its first national title since 1980, Georgia announced a 10-year, $111 million contract extension for coach Kirby Smart following his appearance at SEC Media Days. The new deal will run through the 2031 season and pay Smart between $10.25 million and $12.25 million per season, making him the highest-paid college football coach at a public university.

Smart, 46, was previously making $7.13 million, according to USA TODAY's salary database.

I know it's weird I rooted against the Braves and rooted for Rams, Actually Georgia Bulldogs won three times it's interesting Georgia Moderate rooted for Bengals and Matthew Stafford is a Georgia Bulldog but since I don't live in Cali anymore I can root for whomever, like the Bucks can dethrone Warriors due to Gianni's, we know Jayson Tatum cant

I am certainly gonna root for the Packers but the Chiefs won't lose to the Bengals this yr, that's why Von Miller should of went to Cowboys not Bills, Bills are gonna struggle against Chiefs

Georgia NCAA Football Champ
Atlanta Braves
Rams and Matthew Stafford won
Kansas Jay hawk won Basketball
Astros v Dodgers if Dodgers win they have Freeman but if they lose they didn't get Wilson Contreras

The Coaches's Poll is out.

The rankings:

1. Alabama
2. Ohio State
3. Georgia
4. Clemson
5. Notre Dame
6. Michigan
7. Texas A&M
8. Utah
9. Oklahoma
10. Baylor
11. Oklahoma State
12. Oregon
13. NC State
14. Michigan State
15. USC
16. Pittsburgh
17. Miami (FL)
18. Texas
19. Wake Forest
20. Wisconsin
21. Kentucky
22. Cincinnati
23. Arkansas
24. Ole Miss
25. Houston

I would love to know which coach gave Texas their lone first place vote. My guess is Nick Saban, since he never seems to give his vote to Alabama, and he wouldn't want to give it to Georgia...but why not give it to Ohio State in that case?

Its is well-known that the coaches don't actually fill out their ballots but leave them to staffers/interns to handle. At least, that's the case now. There was a better case to make when the coaches poll was relevant to the BCS calculations for the actual coaches handling it, but now its safer to assume otherwise unless they come out and say that they did it.

There are rumblings that CBS and/or NBC join Fox in televising B1G games for college football. CBS and Fox already do so for college basketball.

ESPN, however, could be shut out of B1G football and basketball.

Awful Announcing:

The Big Ten media rights negotiations appear to be nearing a conclusion, and with ESPN reportedly on the outside looking in.

John Ourand of Sports Business Journal reports on Monday night that “CBS and NBC have emerged as the clear front runners to pick up Big Ten rights alongside Fox Sports.”

The only reason NBC would be interested in Big Ten rights is if they had advance knowledge that Notre Dame was joining the Big Ten, right?

Putting the schedule up shortly so people can get a headstart especially since it basically spans 2 weeks as well.

Note: I will put pre-season AP rankings on there as well when they come out (tomorrow)

Pick'em game rules

The game will run weekly through the college football season, including the bowl games and playoff.  Terry will post each week's slate of games in this thread.  There will usually be 25 games (schedule permitting) and may include some FCS games.

Make your picks by replying in this thread one or more times; don’t send them by PM to either him or me.  You can either copy the list of games and bold your predicted winners, or just post your list of winners.

If bolding your winners, games with zero or both teams bolded will not be counted.  If listing your winners, slight errors in team names will be counted if the intent is unambiguous.  For example, in a Georgia Tech vs Florida State game, writing “Florida” would be counted as a pick of Florida State, but “Georgia State” would not be counted.  I (or anyone) may point out such errors so you have a chance to correct them, but this is not guaranteed to happen – ultimately, you’re responsible for getting your picks posted correctly.

Your pick for a game must be posted before the official start time for that game.  This is a hard cutoff.  You can change any of your picks by making a subsequent post, as long as it's before the game start time.  Please post a new reply for any changes; just editing your original post is easy for me to miss and could also raise timestamp questions.

You don’t have to post your whole list at once.  For example, in a week with Friday and Saturday games, you could optionally post only the Friday game picks by Friday, and then follow up with the Saturday games on Saturday morning.  Or if you forget and miss the Friday games, you can still post picks for Saturday's games.

If a game is canceled or postponed for weather or some other reason: if it's just delayed within its originally scheduled week, it remains on the list for that week.  If it's pushed to a later week or delayed indefinitely, it becomes a "no contest" for the original week.  If it's rescheduled and comes up again on a later week's pick'em list, that's considered a new game and you'll need to pick it again; the original pick will not carry over.

Each correct pick is worth one point.  After all of the week’s games are complete (usually on Sunday morning) I’ll post the results for that week and the year-to-date standings.

Saturday, August 27

Nebraska (Nebraska probably needs to make a bowl game at a minimum for Scott Frost to keep his job)

UTEP

Vanderbilt (Vanderbilt might be the worst team in the SEC, but I think they are better than Hawaii)

Thursday, September 1

Pittsburgh (I don't think Pittsburgh will be a contender in the ACC again, but they should win this one)

Penn State (Purdue usually isn't very good in football)

Friday, September 2

Illinois (Two really bad Big Ten teams go at it. Also my first upset pick of the week, largely because I owe the number of Illini homers on the board favors.)

TCU (Colorado's also been really bad at football for a while)

Saturday, September 3

Boston College (Another pair of mediocrities going at it)

Appalachian State (I'm mildly surprised the line is as close as it is, but I think North Carolina is overrated, even more so than they were last year)

NC State

Cincinnati (This will be a harder test for the Bearcats than last year's game against Notre Dame, but Cincinnati is well equipped to defeat a talented SEC side, especially since Arkansas is not one of the top sides in the SEC. This is my second upset pick of the week)

Georgia (I want to pick Oregon, I really do, but Georgia is just too good.)

San Diego State

Houston

Nevada

Florida (I think Florida's rebuild is going to be further along than people realize, and beating a top PAC-12 side on opening day seems like it's not a stretch)

Coastal Carolina

Liberty

Mississippi State

Notre Dame (I think the Buckeyes can afford an opening week loss to Notre Dame and still make the Playoff, especially if they win the Big Ten. This is my third Upset Pick)

SMU

Louisville

Boise State (Oregon State football is horrible these days)

Sunday, September 4

LSU (I'm not sure why the line is so close. LSU should crush Florida State in my opinion.)

TCU @ Colorado 10 PM EDT ESPN

Because LSU is starting the season coming off a very bad year with a brand new coaching staff while FSU will have both consistency in staff and a cupcake game to shake off any week 1 jitters before this one.

Week 1

Saturday, August 27th

Nebraska vs Northwestern

- Huskers are coming with a new QB, but definitely have the talent advantage in this one. I think Fitzgerald is the better coach, but I'm taking the Huskers since I think NW finishes bottom the B10 West.

North Texas @ UTEP 9 PM EDT

Both teams are returning a similar amount of production, (74%-71%) They're picked to finish 6th and 4th in CUSA respectively. I think I'll take UTEP in this one,

Vanderbilt @ Hawai'i 10:30 PM EDT CBSSN

The worst team in the best conference vs. the worst team in a G5 conference. Roll Dores.

Thursday, September 1st

West Virginia @ Pittsburgh 7 PM EDT ESPN

The backyard Brawl, should be a close game, everyone remembers the iconic 2007 game, even with Narduzzi's recent attacks on my program, I'll take the Panthers at home.

Penn State @ Purdue 8 PM EDT FOX

Penn State takes care of business, don't be surprised to see them in the top 25 sooner rather than later. Im high on Clifford.

Friday, September 2nd

Illinois @ Indiana 8 PM EDT FS1

Indiana is bad, Illinois is bad, give me the Fighting Illini by 2 scores.

TCU @ Colorado 10 PM EDT ESPN

Saturday, September 3rd

Rutgers @ Boston College Noon EDT ACCN

North Carolina @ Appalachian State Noon EDT ESPNU

Upset Alert! Mountaineers shock the Tar Heels.

NC State @ East Carolina Noon EDT ESPN

Cincinnati @ Arkansas 3:30 PM EDT ESPN

Oregon vs Georgia at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA 3:30 PM EDT ABC

Arizona @ San Diego State 3:30 PM EDT CBS
Arizona might not win a game all year
Tulsa @ Wyoming 3:30 PM EDT FS1

Houston @ UTSA 3:30 PM EDT CBSSN

Texas State @ Nevada 5:30 PM EDT

Utah @ Florida 7 PM EDT ESPN

Army @ Coastal Carolina 7 PM EDT ESPN+

Liberty @ Southern Miss 7 PM EDT ESPN+

Memphis @ Mississippi State 7:30 PM EDT ESPNU

Notre Dame @ Ohio State 7:30 PM EDT ABC

My major upset pick, give me the Irish +460 in Columbus.

SMU @ North Texas 7:30 PM EDT

Louisville
@ Syracuse 8 PM EDT ACCN

Boise State @ Oregon State 10:30 PM EDT ESPN

Sunday, September 4th

I don't remember why, I think it was over a recruit that MSU didn't really want (Crocker) in 2023, but he talked bad about MSU online, and it's pretty funny because MsSt is a poverty program in comparison. 3 10 win seasons all-time lmao

Week 1

Saturday, August 27th

Nebraska vs Northwestern at Avira Stadium in Dublin, Ireland 12:30 PM EDT FOX

(Nebraska feels like the perennial meme team.)

North Texas @ UTEP 9 PM EDT

(UTEP may have one of the neatest venues in college sports, but their FB team is bad.)

Vanderbilt @ Hawai'i 10:30 PM EDT CBSSN

(Is Vandry really a SEC school?)

Thursday, September 1st

West Virginia @ #17 Pittsburgh 7 PM EDT ESPN

(We need more rivalries ruined by conference realignment to return.)

Penn State @ Purdue 8 PM EDT FOX

(Penn State may never win another B1G title as long as they're in a divisioin w/ OSU and the figtin' Harbaughs, but they're better than Purdurr.)

Friday, September 2nd

Illinois @ Indiana 8 PM EDT FS1

(I'm surprised this game got a night slot.)

TCU @ Colorado 10 PM EDT ESPN

Saturday, September 3rd

Rutgers @ Boston College Noon EDT ACCN

(I am a sucker for old Big East matchups. RIP)

North Carolina @ Appalachian State Noon EDT ESPNU

(I'm just glad UNC has low expectations this year. UNC never does well when the FB team has expectations. Needless to say losing to App State would be embarrassing.)

NC State @ East Carolina Noon EDT ESPN

(I have in interest in the outcome of this game, but go ACC I guess?)

#23 Cincinnati @ #19 Arkansas 3:30 PM EDT ESPN

(Arkansas is ranked?)

#11 Oregon vs #3 Georgia at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA 3:30 PM EDT ABC

(Will the Pac12 change its name now that it's losing USC and UCLA?)

Arizona @ San Diego State 3:30 PM EDT CBS

Tulsa @ Wyoming 3:30 PM EDT FS1

#24 Houston @ UTSA 3:30 PM EDT CBSSN

Texas State @ Nevada 5:30 PM EDT

#7 Utah @ Florida 7 PM EDT ESPN

(Is [insert a Florida CFB team] back?)

Army @ Coastal Carolina 7 PM EDT ESPN+

(I'm sure Conway will be rockin'.)

Liberty @ Southern Miss 7 PM EDT ESPN+

Memphis @ Mississippi State 7:30 PM EDT ESPNU

#5 Notre Dame @ #2 Ohio State 7:30 PM EDT ABC

(Will ND ever stop being overrated?)

SMU @ North Texas 7:30 PM EDT

Louisville @ Syracuse 8 PM EDT ACCN

Boise State @ Oregon State 10:30 PM EDT ESPN
