Whew! Mississippi State overcomes the #Pac12AfterDark magic and today's SEC West curse and leaves with a sloppy but solid 39-17 win ... that nobody saw because it ended after midnight Pacific time.

WEEK 2 RESULTS

A wild Saturday resulted in a 3-way tie between Harry, Illiniwek, and me at 18-7.  Dereich and Storr were a game behind.  The full results:

18 GeorgiaModerate, Harry, Illiniwek
17 Dereich, Storr
16 ExtremeRepublican, Grumps, Terry
15 CalamityBlue, Donerail, JGibson, NY Express
13 Thomas D

There were four unanimous picks:

Alabama-Texas
Arkansas-South Carolina
Wisconsin-Washington State (wrong)
Oklahoma State-Arizona State

And five picks with a single dissenter:

Northwestern-Duke (dissenter was right)
Western Michigan-Ball State
West Virginia-Kansas (dissenter was right)
East Carolina-Old Dominion
USC-Stanford (*cough* homer *cough*)

Overall, the shared win moved Harry into a tie for first with Dereich.  Year to date (50 games):

36 Dereich, Harry
35 Illiniwek, Storr
34 ExtremeRepublican, GeorgiaModerate
33 Terry
31 JGibson
30 CalamityBlue, NY Express
29 Donerail
28 Grumps
27 Thomas D
12 Orwell

As always, if you think there's a mistake in your score, let me know.

I told you all, Scott Frost would get fired this week.

My guesses as to Scott Frost's eventual replacement as Nebraska Head Coach.

Baylor Head Coach Dave Aranda
Coastal Carolina Head Coach Jamey Chadwell
Former Florida Head Coach Dan Mullen
Alabama Offensive Coordinator Bill O'Brien

Why would Aranda go from Baylor where he is a hero (even if they fall out of the top 25) to Nebraska where the expectation is 10+ win seasons despite the reality these days?

Nebraska's still a more prestigious program, they play in a better conference (especially since the Big Twelve is losing Texas and Oklahoma), which will be great for recruiting, and he'd be in the weaker division in said conference. Division titles at Nebraska are still possible.

I would actually argue it's even better for Baylor that TX and OU are leaving the conference (mainly OU) because it makes it much easier to win the conference. Especially with the upcoming top 12 playoff where you clinch a spot by being one of the best 6 conference winners.

Houston and Cincinnati aren't exactly pushovers and should be able to regularly contend for Big Twelve titles. For that matter, so should TCU, now that Texas and Oklahoma are gone.

If Nebraska poaches someone from the Big XII, Leipold, Klieman and Campbell are all ahead of Aranda. Leipold in particular should be number 1, if he takes their calls.

Florida State (is Florida State back? Last week's win over LSU was a very good omen)

Air Force

Oklahoma (Why is this here? Nebraska was already heavy underdogs, and their situation is even worse after firing Scott Frost. I would have gone with Old Dominion at Virginia instead.)

Army

Purdue (ACC and Big Ten mediocrities go at it. I am so excited./s)

Cincinnati (This may be a hangover game for the Bearcats after seeing the Playoff chances (and possibly their New Year's Six chances as well) go up in flames, but Miami (OH) just isn't on their level)

Indiana (Indiana's bad, but Western Kentucky isn't a good team either. But then again, Nebraska just lost to Georgia Southern...)

Notre Dame (California is horrible, and I don't think the Fighting Irish will lose to two bad teams in a row).

North Texas

Oregon (The PAC-12's playoff chances can be revived from the dead if Oregon wins this one)

Penn State (The SEC West looked horrible last week, though Auburn did at least beat San Jose State. Texas A&M and LSU weren't so lucky.)

Vanderbilt

Appalachian State

Kansas (My Upset pick of the day, Kansas, like Kentucky, will prove it is not just a basketball school)

Mississippi State (honoring our lone Mississippi State homer with this pick, despite getting burned doing that week one with Illinois)

Memphis

NC State

Michigan

SMU

UCF

Louisana

Miami (FL) (Upset pick #2) (Is Miami back? We'll find out with this game.)

USC

Bruh...you talk about Nebraska still being prestigious but ignore the fact that this used to be a huge rivalry? Sad!

We've ignored huge rivalry games before. In fact, we ignore the Egg Bowl every year, and that's usually more competitive than this game will be.

You say that, but people also expected OU to blow out Nebraska last year and it didn't happen. Also we only ignore the egg bowl usually because we try to avoid Thursday games (though we haven't always avoided the egg bowl)

Indeed, Oklahoma-Nebraska used to be the game of the year in the Big 8, and one of the top games nationally.  I still remember the 1971 "Game of the Century" between the #1 Huskers and #2 Sooners, one of the greatest games I've ever seen.

Week 3

Florida State @ Louisville 7:30 PM EDT ESPN  I am absolutely going to do the homer pick here but I am cynical and jaded about the Noles. In my heart of hearts I think they embarrass themselves after LSU by losing a game that stats say they should win
Air Force @ Wyoming 8 PM EDT CBSSN
#6 Oklahoma @ Nebraska Noon EDT FOX
Villanova @ Army Noon EDT CBSSN
Purdue @ Syracuse Noon EDT ESPN2
Cincinatti @ Miami (OH) Noon EDT ESPNU
Western Kentucky @ Indiana Noon EDT BTN
California @ Notre Dame 2:30 PM EDT NBC/Peacock
UNT @ UNLV 3 PM EDT
#12 BYU @ #25 Oregon 3:30 PM EDT FOX
#22 Penn State @ Auburn 3:30 PM EDT CBS  I'm already ready to call this one the stupidest game of the week
Vanderbilt @ Northern Illinois 3:30 PM EDT CBSSN
Troy @ Appalachian State 3:30 PM EDT ESPN+
Kansas @ Houston 4 PM EDT ESPNU
Mississippi State @ LSU 6 PM EDT ESPN
Arkansas State @ Memphis 7 PM EDT ESPN+
Texas Tech @ #16 NC State 7 PM EDT ESPN2
#11 Michigan State @ Washington 7:30 PM EDT ABC I actually agree with the stats that Washington wins this one but this is a homer pick for a friend at MSU
SMU @ Maryland 7:30 PM EDT FS1
UCF @ Florida Atlantic 7:30 PM EDT CBSSN
Louisiana @ Rice 7:30 PM EDT ESPN+
UTSA @ #21 Texas 8 PM EDT LHN
UTEP @ New Mexico 8 PM EDT

Could Duke/Kansas be a potential College GameDay stop next week?  Both teams are 2-0, and assuming Kansas pulls off the upset against Houston, both teams will likely be 3-0 (I can't picture Duke losing to North Carolina A&T at all).

They’d only go to that if they had literally no other options. Duke/Kansas football isn’t a good backdrop for an exciting Gameday since both programs are small and have fanbases that barely care about football. My bet is they go Arkansas/A&M if the aggies win this weekend or Clemson/Wake if they feel the need to force an ACC game in somewhere this year. Tennessee Florida is also possible.
