Then he'd need to show up in court personally for every motion or hearing.

How do these guys manage to keep going on TV and confessing?  Eastman acknowledges he tried to interfere with the certification of the electoral votes!

Not directly part of the felony charges Donald Trump is facing in DC (and elsewhere), but relevant to the thread:
https://thehill.com/regulation/court-battles/4178901-judge-rules-navarro-didnt-prove-trump-invoked-executive-privilege-over-jan-6-testimony/

A federal judge ruled Wednesday that former Trump White House official Peter Navarro failed to prove former President Trump invoked executive privilege that Navarro says prevented him from testifying before the House Jan. 6 committee. His trial will proceed as planned next week.

Navarro was charged with contempt of Congress after refusing to cooperate with a congressional investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

Proud Boys member Joe Biggs has been sentenced to 17 years in prison by federal Judge Kelly (a Trump appointee) for his part in the J6 events.  The DOJ had asked for 27-33 years.

Second longest sentence assigned to a Jan 6ther so far. Most people think Enrique Tarrio will grab the gold medal when he's sentenced on Tuesday.

If you're one of those people who argues over the three purposes of prison sentences:

A. Rehabilitation
B. Punishment
C. Protecting society from this person

I think that all of these cases are pretty squarely in C. Like I don't really see rehabilitation or punishment factoring in here vs the very real risk that they'll just do this again. Try to violently overturn an election. These leaders of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers insanely high recidivism risks because they're motivated by ideology and clearly think they were doing the right thing.

Proud Boy who smashed Capitol window on January 6 sentenced to 10 years

Quote
The Proud Boy who smashed through a window to the US Capitol with a police riot shield on January 6, 2021, allowing the first wave of rioters to storm the building as members of Congress were being evacuated was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison.

Images of Dominic Pezzola, nicknamed “Spazzolini,” using the police riot shield to first breach the Capitol building quickly became a symbol of the violence that day.

“The reality is you were the one who did it,” District Judge Timothy Kelly said during the hearing Friday. “You were the one who smashed that window in and let people begin to stream into the Capitol building and threaten the lives of our lawmakers. It is not something I would have ever dreamed I’d see in our country.”

“You were really, in some ways, the tip of the spear,” the judge said.

They're all moderate sentences compared to what the prosecution is asking for, and right in the middle of suggested sentences. These defendants have not had the book thrown at them, they've been treated quite fairly... they just committed pretty heinous crimes.

This is proof positive why Republicans must never hold the White House again, or else these violent anti-American would be threats to American democracy will be pardoned.

Minutes  after he said how he'd like to apologize to the officer he nearly killed, and how the events of January 6th besmirched the reputation of the Marine Corps he served in- and ultimate humble brag - the following occurred immediately after sentencing.

"Before leaving the courtroom, Pezzola, with a raised fist, shouted, “Trump won!” just minutes after Kelly – who had already left the courtroom – said he hoped Pezzola had turned a corner."

As much as we are reveling in these Hefty sentences being tossed down, we have to also note that this Trump appointed judge who we're so quick to pigeonhole as an apparent independent thinker has repeatedly given these proud boy and other j6 defendants significant downward departures from government sentencing requests.

Color Me highly skeptical as to whether he would do this for say a black or Latino person charged with a drug offense. I I I for one am rather under impressed with his so-called Independence.

My understanding is that sentencing defendants to about half of what the prosecution requested is SOP for federal judges. The biggest departure by Judge Kelly would seem to be accepting the terrorism enhancement, but then not adding any time for it.

Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio sentenced to 22 years in prison for January 6

Quote
Former Proud Boys Chairman Enrique Tarrio was sentenced to 22 years in prison for seditious conspiracy and leading a failed plot to prevent the transfer of power from Donald Trump to Joe Biden.

The sentence from District Judge Timothy Kelly is the longest given to anyone in relation to the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack.

Tarrio leaned against a podium at the front of the courtroom and hung his head as the judge handed down his sentence. Three other members of Proud Boys leadership were also found guilty of seditious conspiracy and sentenced last week.

“The jury didn’t convict anyone for engaging in politics, they convicted Mr. Tarrio and others of engaging in seditious conspiracy,” Kelly said Tuesday. “I don’t have any indication that he is remorseful for the actual things he is convicted of, which is seditious conspiracy and conspiracy to obstruct the counting of electoral votes.”

“Mr. Tarrio was the ultimate leader of that conspiracy,” Kelly said. “I don’t really think this is super debatable.”

Nice!

And remember when Blue Avatars here kept telling us, just after January 6th, that we could not say the event had anything to do with "Sedition," because no one had been officially charged/convicted of it?

Here they are now ...

“What happened here, Laura, is that [congressional investigators] know the Justice Department is not going to deliver on this narrative that they peddled for eight months, which was that this was an insurrection, these people are traitors, that they engaged in sedition,” Greenwald said. “No one is charged with any of those things.”

It's embarrassing what happened with the Capitol on Jan 6th. Typically, Democrats/leftists storm into government buildings, disrupting and causing problems. And typically, the penalty handed out to leftists has been light.

This time, some conservatives embarrassed themselves by storming into the federal Capitol building. Democrats exagerrate and say the conservatives were close to causing a coup, which is not true. Accordingly, Democrats in this deep blue city are handing out harsh sentences to the conservatives, giving them decades in prison.

It hasn't been lost on many that, in this same blue city, the judicial system there have been doing all they can to prevent criminals from spending time in prison. We had woke DAs quickly release criminals that commit crime on the grounds that incarceration is inhumane and inherently racist. Some Democrats also conducted experiments to try and do away with prisons.

The way I see it, if you are a conservative, avoid blue cities. You will not be treated honestly and fairly by the law in a blue run city and state. It's similar to the old south. Before the civil war, northerners didn't want to travel to Democrat southern states, knowing they would be treated unfairly by law officials in the south. The old south was also obsessed with a persons race and skin color just like today's blue run cities. History can repeat itsself.

Sir, this is a Wendy's.

Special counsel accuses Trump of daily statements that could prejudice jury pool in election subversion case

Quote
Special counsel Jack Smith said in a court filing Tuesday that former President Donald Trump has made “daily extrajudicial statements that threaten to prejudice the jury pool” in the 2020 election subversion case.

The allegation arose in a court fight that remains largely under seal, so additional details are not public. The brief reference to Trump’s statements affecting the jury pool at the Washington, DC, courthouse came in a public filing in the federal criminal case.

Smith’s office has been sparring with Trump’s team over how much of the underlying sealed dispute should be made public.

Prosecutors tried earlier Tuesday to file court documents partially under seal – and partially on the public docket.
