  • Daniel Kawczynski intervenes to raise accusations against the Rwandan administration by the Congolese government, going as far as to call Paul Kagame "a Hitler-type figure" and question Rwanda's status as a safe country. An unexpected intervention from someone very much on the Brexiteer right.

Has he holidayed in Kinshasa recently?

Second reading vote:
Ayes - 313
Noes - 269

No Tories voted against.  37 did not vote; only 8 Labour MPs didn't, suggesting about 29 genuine abstentions with the others being paired.

99% sure Kawcynski is too stupid to know the history of Rwanda and assumes Kagame is the one behind the genocide.

As little sympathy as I have for the French and their attempts at grey-washing, it is fairly clear that a genocide--though not of the scale of the first--was committed by the RPF.

As opponents of the scheme have pointed out, Rwanda under Kagame has many problems - hence the Orwellian absurdity of legislating to declare it a "safe country" in the first place.

What's more, it is at this point reasonably clear that the incident which sparked the genocide (the shooting down of Habyarimana's plane) was carried out by the RPF.

Don’t wish to derail the thread, but no it clearly wasn’t them who shot down his plane. It was Hutu power, if it was the RPF Hutu power would have made some effort to find the culprits to protect themselves if nothing else - they didn’t. They were preparing for the genocide for years in advance and just needed a trigger.

It’s very funny how only a few people seem to have noticed that the Tory rebels on the right only had 29 votes; this isn’t enough to derail the bill at ease and will means the Government only need to pick a handful off.

So for all the talk of the five families and so on they’re actually a very small part of the parliamentary party and all bark..

35 day suspension recommended.

If approved, that will set the wheels in motion for a recall petition and eventual by-election, though unless he resigns the timescale for the process may mean that by the time the seat is vacant the General Election may be close enough that they can get away with just leaving it vacant.

And several of those groupings are almost entirely made up of MPs who are odds-on to lose their seats.

Whilst it seems pretty clear they have overplayed their hand, many always expected the bill's third reading to be the most critical stage - so Rishi isn't quite out of the woods yet with this one.

Are we going to talk about how the 'libertarian' Sunak is plotting to ban social media usage amongst the under 16s?

Is it simplistic of me to assume he’s projecting helicopter parent instincts onto the whole country? He’s got pre-teen kids, is he trying to legislate away his fears about them smoking and misusing the internet?

Also - Bradley Thomas has been affirmed as Tory candidate in Bromsgrove, winning his confidence vote 83-3. Payneful night for the backup candidate.

Yeah - emphatic is the word!

That said, it sounds like CCHQ is getting jittery about the pace of selections, and is going to impose centrally-approved three-person shortlists on the remaining seats without a candidate - so he’s probably still in with a decent chance of finding something eventually.

Kinda wild that he’s now been beaten to selection by another FT journalist, after Yuan Yang (FT’s Europe/China correspondent) was picked today to contest Earley and Woodley for Labour.

The issue is the current fight is over the ones with Soviet majorities; even a seat like a Beckenham (Bonsia Bob is retiring) is no longer considered safe and some people consider themselves too grand to have to fight and lose a marginal.

Are you suggesting our Seb might be out of touch, and unwilling to do his time in the trenches? Surely not.

Seriously though, it does take some balls to to only apply for the sorts of safe seats he has, when even sitting Tory MPs are either running for reelection in marginals, or as in the case of Flick Drummond, being sent to marginals after losing selection battles in their own seats to cabinet ministers.

Reports suggest another raft of retirements are expected in January, so if there’s anything with a ‘safe’ majority in there, I’m sure he’ll get a crack at it.

Quote
The Home Office has no aircraft available to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda, even if the government does get the green light from the courts for its immigration plan.

Airlines refused to sign contracts when the Home Office tried to line up planes, fearing reputational damage from the policy, senior figures in government have said.

The airfield earmarked for the deportation flights, which can now be revealed as Boscombe Down, near Salisbury, Wiltshire, is also not ready. It needs millions of pounds of upgrades to fencing and security systems to deter protesters.

A senior government source said: “It’s unbelievable. We’ve given £100 million to the Rwandan government for a Rwanda scheme and yet we have no planes to get people to Rwanda.”

Having said that, Beckenham has significant boundary changes that favour Labour.

This does not really detract from your more general point, though.
