Victory in the War of Independence would not secure the longevity of the United States, as old rivalries and mounting tensions within and between the newly independent states defied the ability of its framers to hold the confederation together. Efforts to reform the flimsy Articles of Confederation in 1786 and 1787 failed, and the increasingly irrelevant Congress never met after 1791. This left the former colonies to a bitter struggle for allies and influence, as Virginia, New York, and Massachusetts—leading a reorganized New England Confederation—emerged as the major powers on the eastern seaboard.

Unwilling to be pawns of the eastern states, in 1790 settlers west of the Appalachians declared independence with the diplomatic support of Spain, establishing a republic with claim to the territory along the Ohio River. Through an alliance with the Indian Nations, Virginia managed to subdue the first revolt by 1793; but a second Ohio Republic gained independence in 1797, comprising the territory of the Kentucky and Illinois Counties, with its capital at Frankfurt and, later, Corydon.

Present

A. = Wallace defeated efforts in his party to have him replaced as VP on the 1944 Democratic primary. He became the 5th President to never be elected to the position after FDR died in April 1945. A progressive visionary, he declined to run for reelection after 4 years of obstruction from Southern Democrats who opposed his stance on segregation, and by increasingly anti-communist Republicans who oppose his stance on peace with the USSR.

B. = Governor Thomas Dewey of New York becomes the first president born in the 20th century, and youngest elected president at age 46. Vice President Earl Warren would go on to be one of the most significant Supreme Court Chief Justices of the 20th century.

C. John F. Kennedy resigns after it is revealed that his physical health is rapidly deteriorating due to Addison's disease. In his short stint as president, he ushers in a series of civil rights and social welfare legislation, known as the New Frontier, through congress. He later dies in 1968 from complications with the disease.

D. Richard Nixon and Vice President Spiro Agnew resign due to separate corruption scandals. Senate Democrats refuse to approve a new Vice President. Both are later pardoned by President Carl Albert.

E. Albert is the first Speaker of the House of Representatives to directly become president. At 5'3" he is the shortest president ever.

F. Bill Clinton ties Teddy Roosevelt as the youngest president ever at age 42.

G. Bill Bradley makes history by choosing Rep. Barbara Lee as his running mate, making her the first woman and first African American vice president in history.

H. Barack Obama becomes the first African American president in history.

I. Former Alaskan Governor and reality TV star Sarah Palin becomes the first woman president in American history. She runs a controversial campaign, accusing incumbent Barack Obama of being a socialist and reverse racist and declaring herself the champion of "blue collar white folk". 2012 becomes the first election since 1888 where the winner lost the popular vote.

J. Barbara Lee becomes the 2nd African American and 2nd woman president. She selects former HUD Secretary Julio Castro as her running mate. He becomes the first Vice President of Mexican-American descent in U.S. history.

Basically, American Presidents are term limited to one term, with the US annexing Canada either in the War of 1812 or later. The party system is basically the same as Canada's as well.

My current predictions given the Mueller/Flynn developments.

45) President Donald J. Trump/Vice President Michael Pence (2017-2019)

President Trump resigns in early 2019 after the imprisonment of Paul Manafort, the arrests of Roger Stone, Donald Trump Jr, Ivanka Trump, and Jared Kushner, and the listing of Trump as an unindicted co-conspirator.

46) President Michael Pence/Democratic House refuses to confirm any Republican for VP (2019-2021)

Pence runs a horribly weak re-election campaign with former Rep. Paul Ryan.

47) President Joseph Biden/Vice President Beto O'Rourke (2021-2029)

48) President Matt Gaetz/Vice President Elise Stefanik (2029-2033)

49) President Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez/Vice President Andrew Gillum (2033-)
