[1] Speaking some years after his time in the White House, Truman would cite two events as pivotal to stemming the rise of global communism in the early years of the Cold War: first, the success of the Berlin Air Lift in 1948; second, the defeat of the Maoist Rebellion in China the following year.

† Died in office of natural causes
* Elected by the House of Representatives in absence of a popular vote majority
** Re-elected by the House of Representatives in absence of a popular vote majority

Notes
7 (Jackson). As president, supported the 13th Amendment to the Constitution providing for the election of the president and vice president by a nationwide popular vote. Opposed by Southern "Nullifiers," the amendment was ratified with the votes of the New England states, who believed it would increase their influence in national elections.

12 (Taylor). Then election of 1848 saw a three-way split in the popular vote between Zachary Taylor (a Whig), Lewis Cass (a Democrat), and former President Van Buren (nominee of the Free Soil Party). Under the terms of the 13th Amendment, the presidency would be decided by the House of Representatives; yet while the Democrats enjoyed a plurality in the lower house, they lacked the votes to elect Cass outright. Van Buren hoped to build an alliance between the Free Soil representatives and his old Democratic allies, but the Southern congressmen refused to cooperate, and residual antipathy towards Van Buren was strong enough among the Whigs to make a coalition of Free Soilers, Whigs, and Northern Democrats impossible. At last, a compromise was struck: the Free Soil representatives agreed to cast their votes for Taylor in the House, in exchange for Whig support for Charles Francis Adams (the party's vice presidential nominee) in the concurrent election ongoing in the Senate.

13 (C. Adams). When Taylor died in office less just over a year from his inauguration, Charles Francis Adams ascended to the presidency. His subsequent veto of the Fugitive Slave Act, his endorsement of the Wilmot Proviso, and his efforts to establish anti-slavery territorial governments in Utah and New Mexico drove the Southern states into rebellion a mere six months from his inauguration. The resulting American Civil War (1851 - 1856) would prove to be the most severe test the American Republic was ever to endure and nearly cost Adams his reelection in 1852, when he ran on a fusion ticket of Whigs, Free Soilers, and anti-slavery Democrats and against Democrat Stephen Douglas. In the post war order, this coalition would be reorganized as the National Party and successfully promoted the ratification of the 14th, 15th, and 16th amendments (abolishing slavery and extending full rights of citizenship to former slaves, at least on paper) under Adams' successors.

19 (Blaine). The last president to have served in the Civil War, Blaine's administrative corruption and opposition to civil service reform split the National Party in 1888, as reformist "Halfbreeds" bolted the convention to nominate George F. Edmunds on an Independent ticket. The resultant three-way split in the popular vote between Blaine, Edmunds, and Democrat Grover Cleveland threw the election to the House of Representatives, where Cleveland was chosen with the combined support of Democratic and Independent representatives.

35 (Carter). The landslide defeat of John W. Davis in 1932, followed by the defection of much of the party's Northern liberal wing to the Progressives over the course of Wendell Wilkie's seven years in office, had relegated the Democrats to minor party status for most of the ensuing three decades. Though the party remained competitive in the South and parts of the Southwest, the party had no serious chance of returning to Pennsylvania Avenue – that is, until Jimmy Carter's long-shot bid for the presidency upended the established political order and succeeded in throwing the election to the House for the first time in 16 years, while the Democrats gained more than 100 Congressional seats across the South and Midwest. Lacking the votes to elect their own candidate, the socially conservative Nationalist representatives threw their support to the Southern Baptist Carter, who thus became the first Democratic president in nearly 50 years. He chose not to seek reelection in 1984.
