Seeing a lot of "If you arrest Trump, it'll only make him more powerful" bullsh*t objections from people like Elon Musk and Chris Rock today. What's absolutely insane about this talking point is the implication that Trump should be allowed to operate above the law because holding him accountable for anything would piss off a few people. Just bizarre.

Sorry if anyone already pointed this out, but it drives me nuts.

"Legitimate legislative interest" doesn't mean there has to a specific legislation pending. Bragg's testimony would aid general consideration of whether and how to legislate on election laws or local DA's ability to target federal elections, such as presidential campaigns

Is your argument that people running for president should be above the law?

Is it your argument that local DAs can use politically motivated prosecutions to interfere with national elections?

Even the most woke leftists acknowledge that Bragg has an extremely weak case

Interfere with what election? There is no election close enough to interfere with.

And at this point "woke" is just a word for everything you don't like. Trump broke the law.

Yep, if you break the law then the government can come after you too.

Which woke leftists are arguing this?

Isn't that DeSantis story with underage girls at a party old news? Seems like it has faded into oblivion.

Cohen has reportedly left the courtroom, so we might be close.

I am. Yes, Trump broke the law and should be punished accordingly - I do not think he should be allowed to walk away. However, unless Bragg goes in a different direction than expected, he will be arguing that:

1) Trump falsified business records,
2) to conceal a felonious donation to his campaign in the form of a technically-legal payoff to Stormy Daniels.

That #2 is large, novel stretch. I don't think there's anything wrong in saying that I would prefer (not that such preferences ought to matter when it comes to enforcing the law) that the first charges brought against a criminal former President be something more robust.

I don't think Bragg is doing anything wrong (I think he is doing the right thing). But with what we know now, nailing Trump with this looks to be an uphill battle.

Earlier I didn't think it would happen for another couple days, but now I wouldn't be surprised if an indictment comes down this evening.

Does an indictment coming today or tomorrow have any immediate and practical consequences for Trump? Or does that just mean there's going to be a trial and at some point he needs to attend the court room? Will Trump be prohibited to leave the United States?

IANAL, but Politico says:

Quote
Once the sealed indictment is delivered to the judge, the DA’s office would discuss Trump’s surrender with his counsel, according to a court official who, like the others, was granted anonymity to discuss internal planning procedures. If Trump were to not surrender, a warrant would be issued for his arrest.

Whether Trump would be handcuffed is a decision that would be made by the district attorney, the court official said. He would be finger printed and a mug shot would be taken, though he is not expected to be “perp-walked” or paraded before the public in handcuffs, the official said.

Not sure of the timeline, but usually it's a few days?

Trump's witness, Cohen's former lawyer, was apparently there to testify to Cohen's precarious mental state when he realized he was facing real prison time. Because that's all he's ranting about right now.

When will we know? Is there going to be any prior warning if it's happening tonight?

I'm guessing it won't happen until Wednesday, if it happens at all.

The DA has put too many things in place to not indict him

The Grand Jury still has to vote to indict

Is that happening right now? Or has court recessed for the day and it would happen tomorrow?
