New York AG’s office alleges Trump inflated his net worth by as much as $2.2 billion in 1 year

Donald Trump inflated his net worth by as much as $2.2 billion in one year, lawyers for the New York attorney general’s office alleged as part of their civil fraud lawsuit against the former president, his adult sons and the Trump Organization.

Over a 10-year period, the attorney general’s office said that when it corrects the Trump financial statements for alleged misvaluations it “reduces Mr. Trump’s net worth by between 17-39% in each year, or between $812 million to $2.2 billion, depending on the year.” The $2.2 billion disparity came in 2014, the state said.

The new allegations were made in a partial summary judgment motion made public Wednesday by New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat.

Trump's civil fraud trial in New York state court (as distinct from his criminal records falsification trial in New York state court, or his federal civil fraud trial in the Southern District of New York, or his damages trial for libel in New York state court) starts October 2nd, 2023. "The trial is scheduled to begin on October 2, 2023 and to end by December 22, 2023," Judge Arthur Engoron wrote in an order laying out scheduling and administrative plans for the case, which alleges that Trump, his children Don Jr. and Eric Trump, and the Trump Organization had for years been inflating their worth to the tune of billions of dollars in financial statements to banks and insurers.

The Manhattan trial will be a bench trial, meaning there's no jury and the case will be decided by the judge. Engoron said he'll hear the case five days a week.

The judge, Juan M. Merchan, said in a letter that while he was not yet ready to discuss potential changes to the March 25, 2024, trial date, he would be willing to have the conversation in February.

The judge presiding over the criminal case against Donald J. Trump in Manhattan signaled that he could be open to changing the date of the trial — now set for March 2024 — in light of the handful of other potential trials the former president now faces.

But in a letter sent to Mr. Trump’s lawyers, the judge, Juan M. Merchan, said he would wait until February to have that discussion, given Mr. Trump’s “rapidly evolving trial schedule.”

In March, the Manhattan district attorney’s office brought charges against Mr. Trump stemming from a hush-money payment to a porn star. The trial was soon scheduled for next March. But in the months that followed, Mr. Trump was indicted three more times. The cases, taken together, have created a legal logjam that coincides with the former president’s third run for the White House.

In his letter to one of Mr. Trump’s lawyers, Todd Blanche, Justice Merchan wrote that he did not believe it would be fruitful to discuss a potential change this month, “in light of the many recent developments involving Mr. Trump.”

I think the difference there is the bank giving someone money of their own accord is not a crime, Pence overturning the election is. Asking people to commit crimes on your behalf is generally a crime in and of itself as well.

Former Trump Org. Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg is in plea talks with the Manhattan district attorney’s office to resolve a potential perjury charge, sources familiar with the matter confirmed to ABC News.

If the negotiations succeed, Weisselberg would plead guilty to lying on the witness stand when he testified in October at the civil fraud trial that names him, his former boss — former President Donald Trump — and others as defendants, the sources said.

The plea negotiations, which the sources described as being in the early stages, were first reported by The New York Times. A spokesperson for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg declined to comment. An attorney for Weisselberg did not respond to a request for comment.

I may be wrong, but my recollection is that Judge Merchan is the one who, last year, caught Trump & his attorneys deliberately scheduling multiple court appearances in different states for the same date.

It's nice to see Donald's delay tactics failing, hopefully this will be part of a trend, and more judges will declined to help Donald avoid facing justice for his crimes.

We're also getting a preview (apparently at the judge's displeasure) of what will doubtless become a common refrain over the next eight months: "Donald Trump is running for office, it's not fair to hold him to account now for the crimes he committed when he was previously running for office".

A judge ruled former President Trump will face his first criminal trial on March 25 in New York.

This comes after Judge Juan Merchan denied Trump’s motion to dismiss the charges against him in the criminal hush money case Thursday.

The decision comes as other criminal charges against Trump in other states have yet to be scheduled, as they are going through pre-trial motions and being challenged in court.

The trial will come in the middle of the ramp up to the general election.

The judge just ruled, in court, that it was in fact, a crime.

The judge pushed back today on the notion that this case is a joke. He said he thinks that they are very serious charges. (The federal judge said the same thing when Trump tried to get this transferred to federal court.) So if you think the case is not a big deal, well, the person who's going to be sentencing Trump if convicted thinks it is.
