Time to begin talking up Liberty for the College Football Playoff?

With four minutes to go in the third quarter, Liberty leads #19 Wake Forest 23-20.

Assuming they win this, the Flames still have games against BYU, Arkansas and Virginia Tech.

Sweep those, and they should make the playoff easily.

Umm... Kansas leads Houston 28-14 going into the fourth quarter.

It's still early, but should we be talking about Kansas as the Big Twelve Champion?

They, almost unanimously predicted by Big12 media figures to be the worst in the conference, have beaten an FCS team, a good G5 team, and a very weird OT game against the 3rd worst in the conference. They're doing better than expected but are still going to be iffy to getting 6 wins, let alone winning their conference.

It also seems evident at this point that Houston was overrated to begin the season.

I seem to recall you, and pretty much everyone else here, saying Cincinnati wouldn't make it all of last year.

To follow up on this, they have the following left:

Duke
Iowa State
TCU
at Oklahoma
at Baylor
Oklahoma State
at Texas Tech
Texas
at Kansas State

To me that looks like:

Toss-up
Loss
Probably a Loss
Super Major Loss
Loss
Bigtime Loss
Honestly no clue, I'll give it to them
Probably a loss
Probably a loss

Getting more than 5 games would take some luck! I'd like to know, NYE, which of these games you think I'm wrong on which would be needed to get them to the championship game.

Also, why did College GameDay go to the Troy/Appalachian State game of all games?

There were far better options (BYU/Oregon, Penn State/Auburn, Mississippi State/LSU and Texas Tech/NC State all would have been better choices for the showcase program. Heck, Kansas/Houston, Liberty/Wake Forest, Oklahoma/Nebraska, SMU/Maryland and Michigan State/Washington all would have been better too.)

The way they are playing, I think they beat Iowa State, Texas Tech and Kansas State for certain. Texas is probably a lot closer than you are giving credit for, and the only obvious loss I see in conference right now is Oklahoma (though I don't think they beat Oklahoma State either.)

Thriller going on between Liberty and #19 Wake Forest.

All tied at 30 late in the fourth quarter.

When will defensive backs learn that on 4th down, you KNOCK THE BALL DOWN instead of trying to intercept it?

Pending a couple of kneel-downs, Liberty will lose to Wake 37-36, thus ending the shortest playoff discussion in history.

I seem to recall you, and pretty much everyone else here, saying Cincinnati wouldn't make it all of last year.
You talking about this post?

Realistically, the playoff breaks down into four lanes, each of which should resolve into one of the playoff spots:
-UGA & Bama (the only one that could conceivably become two spots)
-Ohio State, Michigan, MSU — will be resolved over the next couple weeks. Barring some freak accident, one of these teams will emerge as the East winner and will be essentially guaranteed a playoff spot
-Bedlam will decide which Oklahoma gets a spot, barring something weird involving Baylor
-Oregon & Wake should each be in if they win out, seems unlikely that both will

Sorry to Cincinnati.

UGA & Bama got two spots, Michigan won the East and the conference, "something weird involving Baylor" happened, and both Oregon and Wake lost. Committee didn't want to put Cincinnati in, but ran out of other options. And as bad as Cincinnati was for them, Liberty would be much harder to swallow.

At any rate, Liberty is playing a much weaker schedule than Cincinnati did that year (they've scheduled four decent teams and also UConn, UMass, NMSU, Akron, Gardner-Webb...), is a worse football team, and just lost to Wake. No playoff for them.

Kansas beat Houston 48-30 and is 3-0.  Next will feature undefeated Duke at undefeated Kansas, and it's not even basketball season.

So far Harry is an impressive 13-1, missing only Wyoming over Air Force, with a bunch of people at 11-3.  The record for best week (since I've been keeping score, which started in 2019) is 23-2.

Still think Kansas/Duke should be the GameDay game next week (heck, they could get Coach K as the guest picker, never mind that it's in Lawerance, Kansas).

Bobby Petrino is having an amazing comeback to Fayetteville, as Missouri State leads #10 Arkansas 17-14 at halftime.

Troy/App. State ended in a 53 yard hail mary. That's really good television and it goes with the good story of App. State's fun season. It was a good choice for one of their few G5 visits.

Time to begin talking about Washington for the College Football Playoff?

They are currently up over #11 Michigan State 29-8 at halftime and are 2-0

They play a bunch of weak teams and only have to play Oregon and would be 12-0 entering the Pac 12 Championship game

They'd probably lose to Oregon, and even if they did beat Oregon, I doubt they'd beat USC/Utah (neither of whom they would face before the PAC-12 Championship Game).

The Rose bowl is doable, though, assuming they beat Oregon.

Missouri State isn't even an FBS school.

How did I end up having a more realistic (as of week three) predictions than you?

Arkansas State, which only one person picked, has taken a 32-31 lead over Memphis with just over 4 minutes left.

I have a hard time seeing all four of these making it in, especially Tennessee; remember that Georgia, Kentucky, and Tennessee are all playing each other in the SEC East. Tennessee also plays Alabama. This scenario would require 9-3 Tennessee who had lost to Kentucky, Georgia, and Bama to be higher rated by the committee than any other SEC West team, Big 10 team or Notre Dame. I suppose its possible, but it seems unlikely to me.
