Left - 30,7%
Far right - 32,8% (w/ Dupont-aignan)
Centre-right - 33,1%

The left vote is actually slightly better than 2017. Lots of tactical voting. Gutted for cuddly Philippe 😢

If there was a left candidate that wasn’t Melenchon, they’d have beaten Le Pen and be in the run off. Which they’d likely lose, but still.

There were several left candidates who were not Melenchon they just didn’t get many votes

And 20 for Mélenchon which is quite the surge. Almost double from where he was 2 months ago.

A candidate with his platform but without the baggage and toxic personality would have at least pipped Le Pen for second, which is worth reflecting on.
This is very sad to think about.

One from a disgraced party (fairly or unfairly, the PS are done) and 3 unknown Communists.

Since nobody has talked about him yet, why is Lasalle overperforming? I thought he would only get 1% and yet he is at 3%

Perhaps if someone had Melenchon's campaign skill and Hamon's positions and demeanor, they would have made the 2nd round, and given us a real runoff based on economics. This is really upsetting actually.

So the 2nd round will essentially be decided by the "Left," such as it is. The obvious question for all of us now: will they - presumably, disproportionately Mélenchon, as opposed to Jadot & Hidalgo voters - bite their tongue & vote for Macron despite their hatred for him?

Lassalle is a great repository for NOTA votes since he can’t win & his policies are pretty moderate compared to the other candidates.

If it's any consolation, the combined left did alright.

Roussel on domestic policy, Hidalgo on foreign policy.

Something like that, and personable and not personally divisive. But...alas.

Good thing Macron will win given he is the only French President in my lifetime not to have a good FP

I mean, of course the left would do better if the perfect dream candidate existed. This is why I dislike presidential systems, way too much focus on personalities.

Also, Jadot at some point polled even with Melenchón. The fact that he didn't catch on should made them reflect as well.

By good FP I mean he’s  the only president not to hate on America when we do stuff but then expect us to be a sugar daddy for them .

Amusing that Pécresse and Hidalgo are being referred to as 'mainstream' candidates, when these results clearly show that they are fringe candidates.

Or Macron took their votes.  Still, by my count, non-mainstream candidates won a vote share greater than 50% by a good margin.

Legislatives are going to be really interesting: will PS and LR incumbents follow their candidates into political graves?
