Tonight's Big Winners: Ossoff, Warnock, Abrams, Biden

Tonight's Big Losers: Perdue, Loeffler, Trump, McConnell, CNN
How did CNN lose? The state they're headquartered in elected their first black and Jewish senators tonight and it was a defeat for Trumpism.

CNN was dooming about Ossoff all night even when it was clear he’d take the lead.

This. However, I think they are both pure tossups at the moment.
Loeffler Race is a Toss Up, Perdue is not! Get over it that the Perdue Race is a Toss Up. Doesn't matter how Trump Acts. Republicans will come out in full force having lost the Presidency. The Senate now stands in between "Checks and Balance" or full "Democratic Control". Our Lives, certainly my life depends on at least one Republican winning and derail Biden/Harris and their far radical-leftwing agenda.

Ahem.

Ugh. So the new precedent for Republicans is just trying to overturn the results of democratic elections because they didn't get what they wanted.

That or file for a recall in a lower turnout election (AKA the Josh Newman method)

More to the point, CNN has lost their last bogeyman in government to keep their viewer base worried.

The year is 3000. Jon Ossoff leads by 100M votes.

CNN/AP/NYT project this race as both too close and too early to call.

And half of Atlas will say Ossoff won't actually be sworn in or certified

Georgia Republicans were pretty lucky too. The November Senate results were pretty much the best results they could hope for, if they had to have two runoffs. And their coalition in Georgia is more high-propensity than many states. Still, Perdue seems to have lost 3 points worth of margin largely due to losing his low propensity voters. If this kind of scenario had happened in a state like Wisconsin, the swing left could have been even more brutal.

Tonight would not have been possible without black voters coming out in droves for Warnock and Ossoff. Abrams was the face of this win, not the heart. Democrats need to give more than lip service to these communities, because it's the right thing, but also because Georgia will go right back to the GOP in a heartbeat if they stop turning out.

So in the end of everything the black radical socialist anti-police anti-military anti-imperialist christian guy won with a better margin than the more moderate bland democrat guy? In Georgia?

Interesting. If it were the opposite people would be saying that it shows how going to the left is horrible in swing states. Yet the leftist guy had the better performance.

He ran against an appointed, corrupt, race-baiting, out of touch opponent. Ossoff ran against an Georgia-born elected Senator whose cousin is a former Governor and member of Trump's Cabinet.

Okay but Warnock was supposed to be very unelectable based on his progressive stances. He’s clearly more to the side of the Bernie group, having more of an anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist background aligned to the anti-racism (reminds me of what MLK preached). Yet that regular narrative that it should be bad for the party in a swing state failed in practice Smiley

Good that democrats regained the senate but I’m especially happier for Warnock, more than for Ossoff.

Warnock is not a "progressive". He is a standard Democrat by any definition of the word. You can evidence this by how the twitter progressives are not really behind him. Evidence of a candidate that is a great fit for their constituency unlike folks like Eastman that the a section of the progressives got too greedy with the in general.

Counterpoint: 90% of Twitter progressives are dumb as rocks, and I say this as a socialist myself.

Not this again.

While it looks likely at this hour that he's lost, it's not certain yet.  In any case, Loeffler has every reason to make arrangements with United Van Lines to move her stuff from DC back to Georgia.

Trumpers in the Fox Business chat were not happy. Election was "stolen" again. Don't think they'll ever be happy now, as long as there are Dominion voting machines or something else to blame.

Perdue, expectedly, seems to have overperformed the most in the counties with the most white college grads (Oconee, Cobb, Hall). Loeffler overperformed the most in the far NW corner (Chatt media market/MTG land) and the extremely old school interior SE parts of the state around Waycross. Maybe 7-8 years back this is where the counties were that had still had segregated proms.

I actually wrote a piece on segregated proms in HS for our school paper (circa 2004). Nothing of the sort existed in Northwest GA in my lifetime (probably in large part because of a lack of black residents), but the SE interior definitely still had plenty of them throughout the early 2000s. Places like Toombs and Montgomery were infamous for them.

The high school I went to had "segregated" proms back in the early 1980s, but it was more because as non-official private parties, it was possible, tho obviously not legal, to have alcohol at them than any strong desire to keep them segregated.

Question for the '2022 is an inevitable red wave' people; Will people really be eager to punish Dems if the economy is booming, they got the vaccine and life is back to normal? Who will seriously want to return to the sh*tshow of 2020? Republicans will need something fresh and exciting, maybe taking parts of Trump's appeal but not just going all in on Trump. Maybe classic midterm dynamics enable them to win a sufficiently gerrymandered House and Senate seats that are to the right of the nation, but if Democrats get the country back on track they aren't inevitably going to be swept out.

Took a break from the thread (mainly because of derailing and slow counting) and figured I'd come back to Ossoff being about +1k, but I must say this is a very pleasant surprise.

Pretty sure Cillizza will have 20 articles ready for tomorrow about how Ossoff and Warnock will never be sworn in.

Winning these runoffs is really nice, but it still doesn't take away the fact that the 2020 election was still a disappointing event for down ballot Dems.

We failed to take the Senate [outright] even though we were favored, and we lost a ton of amazing people in the House.

Yeah the Republicans did quite a bit better than the polls and conventional wisdom suggested. Certainly better with many different groups of voters and across much of the country than I (and probably many of you) would've liked.

Imagine telling someone two years ago that Democrats would gain control of the Senate while suffering double-digit losses in the House and winning the presidential tipping point by less than 1 percent

Temporarily changing my avatar and screen name to commemorate Ossoff crossing 50.0% of the counted vote. I did actually live in Metro Atlanta for a year when I was very young, and can attest to a certain Asian presence in the northern suburbs back then.

You confused me for a moment with your Avatar shift, but I seem to recall an article about how the GA-AAPI vote in '16 was heavily targeted in  the '20 GE PRES / SEN Elections, and identified as a key "swing vote" within Metro Atlanta.

Insert classic cliche and NOVA GREEN truism: "Elections are won and lost at the margins"...

*** Miss your OR-Avatar, but hell I would likely be changing my avatar to TX had results been different in 2020 in memory of a College friend of mine  who went to High School in Houston, Texas from a Chinese-Vietnamese-French family background (Complicated story so pm me if interested) ***
