Texas is closing down bars again

This suggests that Texas may have reopened too soon. Will other states have to follow? At this point, I'm wondering if those who were advocating for longer, rigorous lockdowns were right. Hopefully Colorado does not have to go down this path.

A longer lockdown would have just delayed the surge.  The only question is how much treatment would have continued to improve in the meantime.

Texas could have reopened to a lesser degree with success. They didn’t need to open up so many locations for COVID to spread.

Have Republcians or conservatives in general been right about a single thing related to Covid-19, since all this started?

They tried to attack Democrats who lead our most populous cities as being the problem, despite the fact that Trump is in charge of the federal government.

Is it a coincidence that The United States, Brazil, and the UK have had some of the worst responses with their rightwing governments making mistake after mistake?

Larry Hogan and Mike DeWine, maybe.

But other than that...

Florida is apparently reporting 8,942 new cases today.

Clearly everything is just fine here, no need to be concerned.

We're having a vicious spike in South Carolina. Positive rates pushing 17% and cases higher than ever before. Yet, our governor has been silent. He's leaving regulations like mandatory masks up to individual cities and towns, and he keeps re-opening things and loosening restrictions despite the spike.

What a joke Henry McMaster is. He should be ashamed of himself.

In Florida, the link between positive tests (cases), hospitalizations, and deaths has completely broken down.  Positive tests are up 5x since early June but hospital admits and deaths are no higher than mid-May.

Deaths do indeed lag (though only by weeks, not months) but hospitalizations should lag only by days.  Either the virus has become truly less virulent or (as I mostly suspect) the people getting infected/tested are far less at risk than they were in the earlier stages of the pandemic.

Mountain west governors (Gordon, Herbert, Little) have done fine. Managing an outbreak in Idaho is easier than managing one in New York, but still, these states have had pretty manageable cases considering (aside from Utah) they have below-median health care systems for the US.

The exception is reservations have had larger outbreaks but that's a result of a century of policy, not specific failures of these governors.

Loong at FL and other states basically confirm some studies that showe temperarure is not having much of an effect to stop the spreading of this virus. It's not like the flu at all.

Except everyone is inside due to high temps, which is forcing closer contact and more virus spread.

This is actually a great example of why so much of the science surrounding COVID-19 is misunderstood.  There's good evidence that heat itself does actually cause the virus to degenerate quicker, but there's still ample spread in warmer climates.  Why?  Because real people don't live in labs.  Something can be true from a virology standpoint but have very little bearing on epidemiological/public health outcomes because of how "imperfect" and "random" real people actually are.  The effectiveness of masking generally falls into the same category.

You know, if we had adopted the strict lockdown nationally for three weeks back in March or April like I had asked for, we could have already nearly defeated the virus. We could be reopen without having to go back and forth, which just screws businesses over even more.

The wording here is weird.  Is on-premises consumption of other food/drink still allowed?  you can't just stand around drinking beer?

And does this count restaurants? Or just "bars," aka places were alcohol makes up 50+% of sales?

I think we are getting to a point where some states, or at the very least some counties/regions, are going to have to go to total shutdown again.

You can't have a functioning economy with the disease running rampant.

Texas is closing down bars again

Restaurants at 50% is almost certainly insufficient, but at least it's a step in the right direction.

Ron DeSantis should be recalled IMMEDIATELY.

Talk about "monkeying it up."
