Life is full of strokes, and Gary Coleman had a wealthy upbringing, but had issues due to his height which held him back.  That's why blacks up til then, stayed in white orphanages, due to the fact that it gave them a middle class upbringing.

Blacks, in the 80's and 90's; were abandoned by their fathers or mothers and raised by adopted parents or grandparents.

The Kaniskies and the Arnolds, had their mothers die, not in real life, of course, but on the show. So, they were raised by non parents.  Then, in Season 5, Nell, becomes a single mother.  But, she wasn't the kids natural parent. She's singing a song, how she needs a break from being a single mother. Eventhough, the Chief was there, he was doing cop duties, and she had to take care of the family until season 5.

OK, but the Kaniskies were white.  In that case, the black woman was in the role of surrogate mother, rather than being the kid.  It would have made more sense for you to bring up the plight of Webster, who was raised by Katherine and George Papadopolis (who would, decades later, end up pleading guilty to lying to the FBI in the Trump-Russia investigation).

The thing is though, in the 80s you had a ton of TV sitcom kids whose fictional parent(s) were dead.  It wasn't just a black phenomenon.  It applied to whites too.  Dead moms were especially common.  In addition to the already mentioned examples, you've got Full House, Who's the Boss, My Two Dads, and Punky Brewster.  (I guess you could count Valerie / The Hogan Family if you like, though that one was caused by the real life exit of the actress from the series.)  Some of those had both parents dead, but I think they all at least had the mom being dead.  80s family sitcoms loved their dead moms, both white and black.
