Superman is an American Icon that has deeply impacted the United States for decades. In a new rumor, Henry Cavill could hang up the mantle of Superman and could potentially be replaced by Michael B Jordan, a black actor. How would you react if Superman was being played by a non-white actor?

It depends on whether the story they were portraying was actually good. It's an unfortunate trend recently that writers make these sorts of 'brave' casting decisions so the controversy over it can be used to mask that the story itself is terrible and allows its critics to be grouped together with the people who are upset for the wrong reason (ie Ghostbusters, the new Star Wars movies). The reality is that because of this experience, if tomorrow it was announced that there would be a Superman movie where he is played by a black man (for example) I would assume that the movie would be bad.

I think it's kind of silly, how they want to insert X color-of-skin or Y gender into every established story/universe. We need some originality.

But it's mostly harmless and we shouldn't gave a crap anyway...so do what you want, man. If it's good writing/acting, I'd watch it - if not I won't.

If you listen to Lex Luther words, Superman and most of the Superheros, just like Thor were portrayed by GODS, as Israel in the 1940's was created. During the Cold war, Christopher Reeve came in as Superman to save the US from its Soviet nemesis Russia.

There wasn't gonna be a minority superhero list, as Hercules, Zeus were actually Thor, & Loki

Wait, they want Killmonger to play Superman? That's crazy. It would be like casting the Human Torch from that awful Fantastic Four movie as Captain America. (Although Black Panther was obviously a much better movie than Fantastic Four.)

Superman was always a minority as he was from Krypton.  Now, if they get an actual Kryptonian to play him, I'll be impressed.

I would expect this to happen soon.

I really don't see this as remarkable in this day and age.

There are depictions of a black Santa Claus, a black Jesus, and a black Virgin Mary. Only because Buddhism has made few gains among the African-American masses is there no "black Buddha" in America. A black Superman? I hate to say this, but it would be tough to play it straight. Parody, maybe.

OK, let someone come up with an African-American superhero, and I will be fine with that. Make him a good and necessary friend of Superman -- maybe immune to "Kryptonite"? The backstory would have to be different, as the canonical Superman appears on a farm near Smallville, Iowa. It would be impossible for him to hide his character.

Superman did go after the Klan in the 1940s in an interesting story.

As long as white men could portray a black super hero or a black character...I'd be ok with it.

Otherwise, it is one sided and wrong.

I think a man should also be able to be a female now.

If we're not going to care about sex or race. well, lets be straight with it.

I'll be blunt, this feels a LOT like DC is in a desperate state after Justice League bombed and they're trying to cash in on the next big trend - "Black Panther is a hit, how do we cash in". Especially given the rumors they're looking at an Asian actor for Batman.

Of course, this rumor originates from a shady comic book gossip site with no credibility, so we're all likely talking about nothing in particular.

Modern day superhero films are overly philosophical and serious. I don't watch them and therefore wouldn't care who's playing them in any case.

Superman is already an illegal alien so it would kind of be a hat-on-a-hat at this point.

I'd prefer an actor that actually looks similar to how the character should look. People get all sorts of annoyed at when a white actor plays in a role designed to be someone who isn't white, it would be hypocritical if the same folks saw nothing wrong with casting a black actor for the role of someone who appears white.

Already done in the animated 2015 DTV film Justice League: Gods and Monsters which was set in alternate DCU.

Here's one of the promotional shorts they did for the film, with a heavy nod to Akira thrown in for good measure.
