The suburbs overall were hit hard by the early 1990s recession, actually. Although the bulk of losses were in construction, manufacturing, defense, and sectors tied to defense-related durable goods manufacturing, the recession was used as an excuse for a lot of companies to downsize white collar positions after gains in productivity from the home computer revolution of the 1980s. This played a part in the suburbs' swing to Clinton in 1992. Bush's biggest defenders probably would have been Southerners (the region that fared the recession best) employed in the energy sector- i.e. oilmen like Bush himself.

Prosecutors in Bob Menendez trial can't use evidence they say is critical to case, judge rules

Quote
Prosecutors trying to prove that New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez wielded his political influence in exchange for bribes cannot show jurors evidence that they argue is "critical" to their case, a federal judge ruled Friday.

U.S. District Court Judge Sidney Stein said prosecutors could not use text messages from 2019 that allegedly show Menendez, who was the top Democrat on the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee, assuring Egypt and the New Jersey businessmen who are alleged to have bribed him that he was not delaying military aid to the country after Egypt heard he had put a hold on it.

The jury also cannot see another text from 2022 in which the senator's wife, Nadine, allegedly told one of the businessmen that "Bob had to sign off on this." The text included a link about two pending foreign military sales to Egypt, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors argued last week that Egypt was "frantic about not getting their money's worth," which is why it contacted Menendez through two of the New Jersey businessmen, who allegedly gave the senator cash, gold bars, and other things of value...

Ugh. I wonder if it's the kind of evidentiary ruling which permits interlocutory appeal?

When people make it clear they support affirmative action, they remind me of the saying in Animal Farm: "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."

News flash. Being born white is its own form of affirmative action.

I don't really regard any of the realistic winners as acceptable, so I'm just sitting back and watching the chaos. This is really bad for the ANC by any measure.

How on Earth this clown is still pulling more votes from Biden than trump in some polls I will never understand. All of his positions are alt-right, Alex Jones/Joe Rogan mouth breather conspiracies and paranoia. What idiot democrats are seeing JFK Jr and saying, "yeh, letting viruses run wild for four years unchecked and pardoning all the Jan 6th terrorists appeals to me."

It looks like the Tories are polling worse than they were in 1997. This government is more toxic and has a much worse record to defend. So it could be that the question is whether they do marginally worse, or get wiped out.

Lol the red-avatars really are taking Grade-A copium over the fact there candidate is so sh**t he can't even beat the Donald.

Reality check: Biden beat "the donald" by 7 million votes the one time they ran against each other.
PV is meaningless. In the EC which is the actual election, he won by 40k votes. Now he’s 20 points more unpopular (while Trump’s favorability hasn’t budged) and barely even alive. Do the math.

By PV you mean "election results" lol. Biden also beat trump by about the same margin in the EC that trump beat Hillary by. Cry harder.

I couldn't think of anything more meaningless than a poll 6 months out from the election.
You’re being purposely disingenuous. PV margin is meaningless and tbh EC margin is too. The only thing that matters is how hard would it be to flip the result?

In 2008, the answer was A LOT. So even though Obama lost a lot of votes in 2012, he still won fairly easily.

In 2016, the answer was almost nothing: only 80k votes. Trump only lost a bit of margin, but still lost 2020.

In 2020, the answer was even less than 2016: about 40k votes in the largest turnout election since 1900. Clearly, it would not take much to flip it.

By the way, the Cubs never got a majority of runs in the world series. They still beat the Indians.

You said that red avatars were taking copium b/c "there candidate is so sh**t he can't even beat the donald."

trump lost to Biden. Biden beat the donald. He lost whichever way you want to slice it: PV, EC, whatever. trump also lost the PV to Hillary and won the EC b/c of giant helping hands from Jim Comey and Putin. He has never gotten over 47% of the vote in two attempts.

The only person being disingenuous here is you.

I've always been a pretty big fan of Roy Jenkins.
