I'm hoping that it's going to be a an announcement of sending more troops into Kabul and keeping them there until we can get our Afghani allies out. It would be a moral catastrophe to leave them in the lurch like this.

Literally the only failing is that anyone who wanted to leave should have been evacuated. Take all the women and families who wanted out. They are the ones in danger, should have all gotten out and leave just the men who didn’t want to leave.

Biden's July comments are absolutely damning. Blaming Trump is not a viable option and may even further damage Biden in the eyes of the American people.

Aside from the July comments, Biden has been president for 7 months not 7 days. Passing the buck won't work.

Passing the buck on what? A 20-year war? Were we winning (whatever that means) before he came into office?

I'm sure he'll be blaming Trump.

If he doesn't specifically address the refugee crisis, which seems to be most acute/active at the Kabul Airport, I will be extremely disappointed. It better not be anything remotely resembling his position as a 32 year old first term Senator in 1975: “The United States has no obligation to evacuate one, or 100,001, South Vietnamese".

Quote sourced from this Atlantic article from April which predicted the future quite accurately:  "Henry Kissinger, who negotiated the peace agreement between the U.S. and North Vietnam, once referred to this period [the two years South Vietnam lasted after US troops withdrew in 1973] as “a decent interval”—long enough for the abandonment of an ally to be obscured, for defeat to be laid at the door of the Vietnamese rather than the Americans. In Afghanistan the interval will be even less decent; the takeover by the Taliban after the withdrawal of American and other NATO forces will very likely happen much faster."

Lol, what are you even talking about? There are dozens of threads this month alone full of red avatars praising Biden on his own merits.

Loads of stupid speculation here. How about we just wait the two and a half hours to see what he actually says?

You're not wrong, but... you've been on Atlas since 2003. Was there ever a time when the board as a whole would have done that? I mean, we basically exist as a community because we don't want to just wait and see what happens.

He’d better not reverse course. He did something right. To hell with the war party.

There is no way to reverse course now given the government we are backing has already  fallen

Agreed. It's not even possible that the size of a military action to take Afghanistan back would require congressional approval. I don't see appetite for that on either side of aisle. Aside from the fact that it wouldn't be wise to spend any political capital on that. Focus on passing the domestic agenda and repair relations with allies.

Hopefully he announces that the US will accept refugees, not that I'm optimistic, but it's really the only thing to do following this disaster.

What is there to even say? "Sorry you're all about to get killed and your 9 year old daughters become prostitutes for jihadists. So long, suckers"

Trump certainly sucks and his dumb peace talks with the Taliban were not in the least helpful but that has nothing to do with how the withdrawal has been handled, which is 100% on Biden.

American people want OUT of Afghanistan.

The war was lost a long time ago.

The pullout would have looked bad no matter which president did it.

A lot of Democrats, including myself, have criticized Biden's handling of this withdrawal and are very unhappy about it, this isn't the own that you think it is.

All he has to say is that he is looking out for American's interests.

If Afghans aren't willing to fight the Taliban, what else can Americans do?

Don't see how the Taliban having control of an entire country is in America's interest, but he can run with that, at least it sounds better than blaming Trump.

Credit goes where it’s due. I am not referring to all Democrats, in case you can’t read between the lines.

Among other dumb things about this post, the President doesn't have the constitutional power to fire the Vice President.
meanwhile back in the real world the president has the power to do what he can get away with without being stopped, the constitution is just a piece of paper

Americans don't want to be stuck in perpetual foreign wars.

He's just giving us what we want.
