CNN on air is reporting Mr. Trump considers pardoning himself, Don Jr. and Rudy for their role in the terrorist attack.

Could a self pardon allow him to run in 2024 even if he’s barred from doing so by the Senate?
I highly doubt it.

No.

Quote from: Article II Section 2 Clause 1
he shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.

So regardless of whether or not self-pardons are valid, he can't prevent being blocked from office by a Congressional impeachment.

So my understanding from that is, if he is convicted by the Senate, his potential pardon immunity is voided for any federal charges related to the events of the 6th?

Which would be an admission that they committed federal crimes by inciting it.

Donald's put himself in a a dilemma. If he pardons himself before his second Senate trial, that's effectively a confession that he should be removed from office. But if he waits for the verdict, he'll lose the ability to abuse his office by an illicit self-pardon.

My prediction is that he waits until the Senate is voting and then self-pardons before the outcome is final.

New footage that allegedly shows the rioters planning their assault on the Capitol.

(The battering ram is, as may have already been mentioned, yet more evidence that the Capitol assault was premeditated by some of the attackers. Nobody hauls around four-inch poles for protest signs.)

I don't think so. He can't pardon somebody out of getting impeached, but he can still pardon them from criminal liability, for anything.

Trump cultists take note: this is what real patriotism looks like - sleeping in shifts on marble floors to defend democracy. I never thought I would see a day where I would see soldiers have to defend American democracy so literally.

The "Camp Auschwitz" rioter has been arrested (for unlawful conduct, entering the Capitol without permission and disorderly conduct).

I highly recommend watching this video in its entirety. It's a roughly chronological supercut of different longer-form videos taken throughout the day. It gives a lot more context to some of the 10 second video snippets that have been getting played on repeat all week, especially the shooting of the rioter outside the Speaker's Lobby.

I'm wondering if it even needs to be a process where the Senate actually reaches a conviction. If the wording is "Impeachment," does that mean just passage by The House?

"except in Cases of Impeachment" means a pardon cannot stop an impeachment process. It has nothing to do with criminal liability.

Can’t believe the National Guard inside the Capitol looks like a far more refreshing and democratic sight than civilians inside the Capitol, but here we are. These people clearly actually care about their country and respect what it stands for. Can’t be said for Trump and his cultists.

It will actually take years to unravel how corrupt Trump and all the acts associated with him were. Just wait until he's out of office and no danger to anybody minus his executive power, the floodgates are going to open with people revealing his depravity and corruption.

There are apparently more troops on Capitol Hill right now than in Afghanistan or Iraq. Turns out this is what we get for becoming a top oil producer. Tongue

Presumably, folks on the left are split between "no" and "unsure" because many of typical folks have no idea who or what "antifa" is since, well, it's not really a thing except in the right wing media.

It says 11% of Biden supporters think Antifa was involved, so I'm just not going to put much stock into it.

Edit: And 15% of democrats. Usually these YouGov questions give wonky results.

Central Washington is now a Baghdad-style Green Zone. I wonder how Iraqis who immigrated to the US and settled in Washington feel. It's like they went back.
