Both in a Georgia sense & beyond how common is it for the run-off to be won by someone who finished second?

In Georgia it’s happened once before. In 1992, incumbent Democrat Wyche Fowler finished first in the November election, but Republican Paul Coverdell won the run-off. These are also the first run-offs in Georgia that the Democrats have ever won.

Warnock finished 1st in the first round, not 2nd.

And before 2005, a candidate in Georgia needed only 45% of the vote to win the first round and avoid a run-off.

This was changed to 51% when Republicans took over the state's legislature.

Had this not happened, Purdue would have outright won the first round in November.

Is Warnock really the first Black Democratic Senator from the South ?

Percentage-wise, there have been a lot more black presidents than black senators.

I’m not sure if that was the case, because Fowler got 49.2% and still had to advance to the run-off which he lost.

Whoops, forgot to mention that 50% was the first-round benchmark during the '92 GA-SEN election.  This was changed to 45% between 1993 and 2005 before the state legislature reverted to 50% once more.

If you count the California top-two rules, it happens quite a bit.

In my Assembly district primary in 2016, the Republican incumbent came on top 46-42 (It was just him & 2 Democrats). That November, the Democrat won 55-45. Two years later, the Republican challenger came on top in the primary 52-48 and then lost in November.

In the 2014 primary for the 31th Congressional district, Pete Aguilar came in second to the Republican 27-17 (0.4% away from a GOP lockout). He'd go on to win in November 52-48.

I guess we won't be having someone more conservative than Attila the Hun in the senate after all.😞

The data was all in some favor for the Democrats, but after the 2020 election it's hard to see how they pull it off. Biden may have won the state but it still voted well to the right of the nation and Republicans got more votes than Democrats in the 2020 Senatorial contests. I'm posting this after the election has already taken place and I have not looked at the results. I just have a dark feeling that, whether by a squeaker or not, the R's have won. Even if somehow the result was split between Perdue/Warnock that still means that Cocaine Mitch, not Biden, is going to be the most powerful man in the world this year.

I don't plan on actually looking at the results anytime soon. I plan to distract myself away from this topic. I have no optimism that Democrats have won but I don't feel like confirming this after waking on the wrong side of the bed.

This is definitely a great way to start the new year. I never thought this was possible after early happened and the disappointments in Maine and North Carolina. However, these losses may have energized Democrats to turn out because everything was on the line.

Stacey Abrams really deserves a huge thank you. Hope she either becomes governor or DNC Chair. I also can't express how thankful I am to African American voters. They saved Uncle Joe in the primary, elected him president and now delivered him a senate he can work with. While 50-50 + Kamala is a very narrow path to operate on, I'm still optimistic meaningful stuff can get done on numerous issues. Hopefully some Republicans like Romney or Collins are on board with some things as well.

What I'm especially excited about is Georgia electing an African American Pastor and a Millennial Jew, given the history of this state. Voters turned the page from the old South to the New South.

And last but not least, forgive me some Schadenfreude, Majority Leader Schumer and Minority Leader McConnell sounds awesome. Cocaine Mitch finally got what he deserved.

It's not too uncommon in primaries:

2018-GOP-GOV: https://uselectionatlas.org/RESULTS/state.php?fips=13&year=2018&f=0&off=5&elect=2

2018-GOP-LTGOV: https://uselectionatlas.org/RESULTS/state.php?fips=13&year=2018&f=0&off=6&elect=2

2010-GOP-GOV: https://uselectionatlas.org/RESULTS/state.php?fips=13&year=2010&f=0&off=5&elect=2

2008-DEM-SEN: https://uselectionatlas.org/RESULTS/state.php?fips=13&year=2008&f=0&off=3&elect=1

But for general elections, the last time was the 1992 Senate contest:

While I still don't necessarily love the idea of trifectas, I'm more than okay with McConnell getting his sorry self unseated as SML.

Well done, GA Purple heart

Idk how many times I have to say this, but any legislation has to go through bagel style dems who aren’t going to let anything radical through as long as they can prevent it. No one is coming for your precious glock

When do we expect the networks to call the race for Ossoff?

I think most of the outlets will call it in a couple of hours, when more of the outstanding  Atlanta area vote is in.

DDHQ has already called the race for Ossof, though.

I went to Free Republic to feed on their tears and my favorite take from one of them is a poster who wrote that they should have let Stacey Abrams win the governorship in 2018 because because then she would have been too busy being Governor to organize GOTV efforts.

You know, I think the media is becoming increasingly irresponsible with how conservative they are about calling races given the current climate in which faith in the electoral system is being undermined. We know the results for all practical purposes, dragging it out just fuels the ‘stealing muh election’ brigade.
