A ÖVP member of the Austrian parliament is Corona-positive.

He is not present at today’s parliamentary session, but was at the previous Sunday session ...

Yesterday evening I had a videoconference with two friends who live in Buenos Aires. They were at a coterie meeting with other people, the last before confinement. I told them about my last week living in quarantine. I believe Argentina is the first country in Latin America to join our club

Peru has been under quarantine since March 16 and their's is even more restrictive

Looks like Austrian curfew measures are starting to work.

2.400 cases as of 3pm today (+19% with 3pm yesterday).

That is the 2nd lowest rise since the epidemic started here.

Tyrol (which is completely sealed off) is only seeing a small increase anymore.

The number of deaths (6) remains low and virtually all are over 60 with significant illnesses before.

The weekend promises even a further reduction of the percentage-wise growth, because the weather will turn cold and snowy/rainy and people will even spend less time outside (except for the necessary groceries shopping).

+98.000 filed for unemployment money in Austria in the past 4 days alone.

So, we had ca. 340.000 registered unemployed at the end of February.

If we factor in today’s numbers, it is likely that unemployment increased by 120.000 this week, or by more than 30%.

I keep wondering how many people will die in result of inadequate medical help due to resources and people focusing on the virus. Regrettably, I think it'll be more than actual coronavirus deaths.

I didn't know this word and had to look it up, and initially I thought you tried to write "covfefe meeting" but had a typo.

Not sure if that's a good translation for the Spanish word ''tertulia''
I just googled it. There's no word in English except for "coterie" that I found, but I've never heard anybody use the word "coterie" in my life. Uncommon word.

We would say...

Book/poetry/world news    club/group/meeting/gathering

Possibly you never heard the word ''cterie'' because it has became old-fashioned, or maybe it's only used in England. I usually resort to online dictionaries when I don't know how to translate a word. In this case I was unsure and added ''meeting'', but ''tertulia'' refers to a particular kind of meeting and maybe ''coterie'' is more fitting

I am concerned by the impact of coronavirus in Africa, South Asia or Latin America. They have the disadvantage of poverty and weak healthcare systems, but have the relative advantage of young populations. The death toll could be terrible

"Coterie" is definitely used in American English, too, but is also definitely an unusual word. I don't think it would be used to describe a meeting, though. A "coterie" is a small and exclusive group of people, maybe who are in charge of something or who hold themselves separate from a larger group. It's roughly synonymous with the more common English word "clique" (both direct borrowings from French, of course).

Jesus Christ... German media reports this is 620 more deaths in 24 hours. I'm feeling so sorry for my Italian friends.

Update from Germany: A number of state governments have restricted public gatherings. Restaurants are shut down entirely, only drive-ins and to go are still allowed. No more than 3-5 people are allowed to stay in public space (excluding families with kids).

Federal government will determine upon a national lockdown this weekend. Officials say the decision depends on behavior this weekend. I'm hopeful we can avoid a mandatory lockdown because unlike today and yesterday, there is no sunshine expected for the next few days. It's supposed to rain tomorrow.

Then ''coterie'' is a fitting word, because my friends were in a private meeting with other friends. Basically a ''tertulia'' is a chat between more than two people, sometimes within a private or exclusive group. ''Conversation group'' might work, too. Thanks

'Clique' has negative connotations, 'coterie' would be neutral.

Federal government will determine upon a national lockdown this weekend. Officials say the decision depends on behavior this weekend. I'm hopeful we can avoid a mandatory lockdown because unlike today and yesterday, there is no sunshine expected for the next few days. It's supposed to rain tomorrow.

FWIW my mothers Company was advised from the state Government telling them to print Employment-confirmation letters for their employees today, so that when police stop them they can prove that they are on the way to work. That is probably about quite the best indication that in BW lockdown is imminent. I think the question is only whether all State Governments and the Federal Government will agree this weekend, or whether only the hardest hit like Bravaria, BW, NRW and Hamburg do it.

I mean, ultimately, as you already pointed out, people brought this on themselves. Hardly anyone is doing social distancing in Germany, parks and playgrounds are full, the Police have broken up hundreds of "Corona-partys", not only is nobody wearing masks, people who do so are publicly shamed, politicians have been forced threaten us with curfews if we do not start actually doing what we have been told to, and even where there is a lockdown, some 50000 people (including 8000 just yesterday) in Italy have been charged with Violating the lockdown, the french minster of the interior has been forced calling people "imbeciles" for going out .....

I cant help, but wonder whether we ever had headlines like this coming out of Japan, South Korea et al.? Maybe the fact that the Spread appears to be expanding uncontrollably in Europe has actually less to do with Contact tracing, Travel bans, lockdowns, heath care system preparedness, climate or anything like this, than we thought. Maybe we are just too self-centered and individualistic. The Idea with the lockdown, I think, is less just to keep people Indoors, but maybe it will actually make people aware of the gravity of the situation.

Poland still at only 5 dead.

'Clique' has negative connotations, 'coterie' would be neutral.

I've always preferred "camarilla" over each term, though I think it'd belong to a more negative category (like the infamous Hindenburg's camarilla).

Some relative good news I guess in France
78 deaths today, compared to 108 yesterday.
1,617 new cases today, compared to 1,861 yesterday

Health officials expect the epidemic's peak in 5 to 8 days, which, when you compare to Italy, seems to me very early.

A general store where I'm doing most of my groceries installed a provisional screen to protect cashiers, though it's still a half-measure at best. What's especially appalling is the extreme shortage of protective masks which should be issued to people working on such jobs for hours a day. They have to content with gloves and screens. We've been hearing the supply of masks "is coming", and that's all.

What's worse, it appears that many ambulance services personnel doesn't have any such protection. In Ursynów (one of Warsaw's boroughs) a moron called the ambulance after showing flu symptoms (I'm saying a "moron" because the proper procedure is to call the sanitary services, notify them and await proper examination, unless you feel really, really bad) and now the entire crew is infected from him.
