Question:

Are seated debates not common in the US ?

I’d like to have a debate where candidates are seated in cozy chairs like we have here in Austria.

Debate podiums are unnecessarily stiff.

There was a 2008 GOP primary debate that looked like a game show:

They looked pretty comfy in this one too, from 2012:

Maybe Ron Paul is the key to getting seating at these things? Or Romney.

I think opening statements will be nice to have back. 90% of people have no idea who half these candidates are. Giving them a chance to introduce themselves seems like a no-brainer.

That 2012 CNN format is what I’m talking about.

We need more of that.

Seated debates just look weird, they look less like presidential debates and more like a family dinner conversation. Truly, if a candidate can't be standing for thirty minutes till a commercial break then that candidate probably isn't strong enough to be president

The alternative is a two-person press conference.

All I want is Biden and Kamala on separate nights and Castro and O'Rourke on separate nights. Let's start fresh instead of relitigating the last debate. Well that and balanced time between candidates.

Just give me Harris, Booker, de Blasio, and anyone else likely to attack Biden, on stage with Biden. The frontrunner needs to be attacked, not surrounded by sycophants hoping for a spot in his administration.

What I really, really want is to see Bennet and Gillibrand have breakout moments.  I'd love see Bennet attack Biden, and Gillibrand attack Buttigieg.

Get out of my head!

What would Gillibrand have to gain from attacking Buttigieg at least compared to others polling higher?

Their base would probably be pretty similar, tbh. But I don't think attacking him would help gain these voters.

I'm hoping climate change covers more than 5 minutes or whatever this time. And that they just don't open the debate with the same question on the economy. I'd also like more discussion on transportation and infrastructure. They can do a lot better by opening a debate with random economic questions, asking two candidates about equal pay, only one of whom answered the question.

I'm hoping Kamala can stay away from Tulsi who has come at her on twitter a few times recently. Tulsi will be in desperation mode, looking for a moment to get some heat to get to 130k and 2% in polling. Kamala isn't an easy mark like Beto, but still shouldn't get into it with her if it can be avoided.

If you with transportation mean bullet train, which we already have in every other advanced country on this planet, including China, then I agree. If you mean something else, then I probably couldn't disagree more. Transportation is not THAT much fun of a topic unless it leads to actual and transformative change.

Buttigieg ended up being all the things Gillibrand was supposed to be:

1.)  LGBTQ advocate - few in government were as closely associated with the repeal of Don't-Ask-Don't-Tell as she was
2.)  military strength - she's the ranking member on the Armed Services Personnel subcommittee; she's very publicly gone toe to toe with the military brass to reform US military culture (compare that to "I Couldn't Get It Done" Buttigieg)
3.)  fundraiser - she's from New York, with its huge fundraising networks
4.)  tech industry candidate - specifically, she's from Tech Valley, the model for how industrial decline can be reversed
5.)  rural, moderate appeal - represented New York's 20th in Congress

What's more, she's a freakin' US Senator and he's the mayor of Nowhere, Indiana.  I will never understand why her campaign floundered and his took off.
